Development on Terraria: Otherworld, a new entry in the series that would have seen people creating a character in a corrupted alternate dimension and restoring it while enjoy RPG elements in the open-world, 2D sandbox we are familiar with from Terraria, has been canceled. The announcement was made via the official forums.
Terraria: Otherworld was first announced back in 2015. It was eventually given a 2016 launch window. In 2017, Engine Software stepped back and Pipework Studios was working with 505 and Re-Logic on the game. However, in the statement made by Re-Logic, it was noted that the game was in a “very undesirable state” and that it was still far from the original vision and behind schedule. The message thanks teams for their hard work, admits it would never would have reached its potential and stated that it did not want to sacrifice quality to just make sure a product was out there. Apologies were also made for not delivering and making an error in speaking publicly about the game.
Re-Logic also talks about the future. It notes that Terraria’s 1.3.6 update is in development. It also says 505 and Pipeworks are focusing on the Nintendo Switch, other consoles and mobile devices. Re-Logic has possession of everything that would have gone into Terraria: Otherworld and those ideas could appear in future games. Also, it states that it realizes outsourcing development “was not the way to go” for Terraria: Otherworld and it will use its own people for core development of its next games.
