Sony CEO Says The Next-Generation PlayStation Console Is A Necessity

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida shared a statement regarding the next-generation PlayStation console in an interview with the Financial Times, where he talked about the future of PlayStation.

While Yoshida declined to name Sony’s future console the “PlayStation 5,” he stated “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.”

The Financial Times report also mentioned the industry rumors regarding Sony planning a tablet that would connect to multiple devices as online streaming of games becomes more widespread.

There was also some talk about Sony embracing the surging potential for eSports that currently has a market based around a global audience estimated at 167 million that was online streams of pro gamers. According to the analysts, Sony will be keen to rectify that through its next console. Sony Interactive Entertainment said it was considering various options to strengthen its position in eSports, which they see as an effective way to encourage players to play a game for a longer period of time and to enhance the social role of games.

Lastly, according to people in the games publishing industry with knowledge of Sony’s plans for their next console, early indications show that it might not be a major departure from the PlayStation 4. The fundamental architecture is also said to be similar.
