Standalone Steam Link Discontinued

Valve has announced the discontinuation of the physical Steam Link device. While both the physical Steam Link and digital mobile app will be supported, an update on the official product page for the streaming box notes that the streaming boxes will no longer be made developed. It clarified that stock is sold out in Europe. However, some copies are still available in North America.

As a reminder, the Steam Link was originally released in November 2015 and was a means of streaming someone’s Steam game library to a TV. It was compatible with the Steam Controller, as well as the DualShock 4 and both Xbox 360 and Xbox One Wireless Controllers.

In May 2018, Valve released the Steam Link app for Android and Apple iOS devices. However, Apple rejected the app. Eventually, the TestFlight version of the app appeared, but lacked the ability to purchase games. Currently, the Steam Link app is only available on Android devices.

This move might not come as a total surprise, given the drastic discount found on the Steam Link in 2018. There were periods this year in which it was available through Valve for as little as $2.50. Most notably, it was available during June 2018 for $2.50 with $7.99 shipping.
