Earlier this week, we saw Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s massive debut in Japan with 1,220,535 units sold, and Media Create has provided additional information in their updated sales chart.
As we previously reported, the 1.22 million debut of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate surpasses the 2014 Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS which opened with 944,644 units. This makes Ultimate’s debut the best of the entire series.
However, the sell-through of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was at a lower 68.52% compared to Super Smash Bros. Brawl which sold 819,647 units for Wii at a sell-through rate of 94.37%. The aforementioned Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS sold through 93.45% of its initial shipment.
While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had a lower sell-through rate, keep in mind that Super Smash Bros. Brawl released at the end of January 2008 in Japan and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS released in September 2014. December is by far the busiest time of year for video game sales in Japan and the extra shipment is likely in anticipation of what’s to come.
Following a massive restock in Switch hardware, Japan had a shortage in Switch software at the end of last year and early this year. Titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ARMS, and 1-2 Switch were sold out on Amazon Japan as well as major electronics chains, so we’ll see how things hold up for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and other Switch games through this year’s holiday season.
