Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Is Basically SAO Meets Freedom Wars In A Third-Person Shooter

Bandai Namco revealed Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet an upcoming third-person shooter for PS4, Xbox One, and PC title, and we got a first look at its gameplay during a recent live stream.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is a third-person shooter and RPG hybrid with a focus on high-speed action. It retains features from previous Sword Art Online RPGs in character growth through leveling and skills, but the main change is in the gameplay. It offers a variety of weapons ranging from Kirito’s photon sword to different types such as gatling guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and assault guns.

Its story will be completely different from what we’ve seen in Sword Art Online, and what comes out of the pod in the above image will have a big part to do with it.

Unlike what we saw in the anime, characters such as Asuna, Leafa, and many others will be joining this next adventure. Since there are many characters who’ve never been inside Gun Gale Online, Bandai Namco put some time into coming up with suitable weapons for all of them. We’ll be seeing more characters and their weapons revealed in the near future.

The gameplay footage begins at the 1:29:00 mark of the video. In the demonstration we get to see Sinon in action. The game will have you use a main weapon as well as sub-weapons, and there’s also a “wire” that helps you get around.

The wire is something that wasn’t in the original Gun Gale Online, but it was added as a way to help players keep their distance away from enemies, escape from trouble, or simply to reach a nice spot to shoot enemies down. Keep in mind that the game is being developed by Dimps, who made Freedom Wars, so the similarities are definitely there.

We then get to check out some melee action with Kirito busting out his Photon Sword. The “Bullet Line” defensive system assist in Gun Gale Online that allows the players to see trajectory of bullets that are being aimed at them will also be present in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet as shown in the footage. You’ll get to use a variety of sword skills as well, but they say that it’s actually a little tougher to use compared to other weapons.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet releases worldwide in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can check out its announcement trailer, screenshots, and first details in our previous report.
