Pokémon Sword & Shield Introduces The Max Raid Battles As The Series’ First 4-Player Raid System

Recommended Videos

During today’s Pokémon Direct, we got a look at Pokémon Sword & Shield’s brand-new 4-player raid system called Max Raid Battles that allows up to four players to team up online or locally against giant “Dynamax Pokémon.”

Check the new trailer below for a look at the Dynamax feature:

Planning Director Kazumasa Iwao explained some of the features of Dynamax Pokémon and the Max Raid Battles. Pokémon from the Galar Region can Dynamax to become massive in size and also boost in power. All the moves they know turn into powerful “Max Moves.”

Dynamaxing can be used once per battle, however, the Pokemon reverts to normal after three turns, so you need to choose wisely when to trigger it. The Dynamax system will play a big role in the games.

In the Wild Area, you can connect with other players to take on content together. One of the new multiplayer features is called the Max Raid Battles, where four players can cooperate to take on wild Dynamax Pokémon.

Unlike the regular Dynamax effect, the wild Dynamax Pokémon can keep this form throughout the entirety of the battle. Additionally, they have special powers that make them extra tough to fight. During Max Raid Battles, only one of the players will be able to Dynamax their Pokémon in each battle, so coordinating it will be important for proper teamwork.

By emerging victorious in these battles, the players will get a chance to capture them in a special dynamic sequence. The type of Pokémon that appear for Max Raid Battles will vary based on where you are in the Wild Area and the state of the weather. There are also some Pokémon that you can only catch after beating them in Max Raid battles. Players will get to team up with friends nearby using local connectivity or with Trainers around the world online.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield release for Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
