How to Find the Imposter in Baldur’s Gate 3

One of the most mysterious and bizarre events that can happen in Baldur’s Gate 3 is learning about an imposter among your friends. It is possible, but not guaranteed on every playthrough, for there to be an imposter among the party members you’ve grown to care about. Here is how to potentially find out the identity of the imposter in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Discover the Imposter in Baldur’s Gate 3

To start, the imposter appears randomly at some point in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. This doesn’t seem to happen for every player, but speaking with Gortash has a chance for him to reveal the likelihood of an imposter in your camp. It also seems more likely to happen if you are playing as The Dark Urge.

When this happens, a character named Orin the Red, who you might remember from Act 2, takes over the identity of one of your companions. You should speak with all of your companions at the campsite to find out who the imposter is.

The imposter will act odd compared to their original version, potentially saying incorrect statements about your adventure thus far. You can even check their inventory, which could reveal who the imposter is, since they may not have the items the real person had before.

Some surmise the imposter is the companion you had the least amount of approval with, which is why Lae’zel is commonly the target in many players’ games. Regardless, finding out the imposter initially lets you deal with them before they attack the little girl who wanders into your camp.

After you deal with that cutscene, head to the Undercity Ruins and the Bhaal Temple there to find your lost companion on the altar tied up. You’ll have to pass a skill check to save them, so I suggest saving beforehand to ensure you don’t lose a companion.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 5.
