Naruto’s voice speaks out

By Spencer . February 8, 2006 . 9:00am

Whether you’re watching Cartoon Network, stepping into a mall with a Hot Topic store or reading the New York Times you’ll hear about Naruto. Now the series has officially moved out of the introductory stage, the first story arc “The Land of Waves” has been completed on Toonami and viewers are jumping right into the Chunnin exams. Now that Naruto has become more of a household name we talked to Maile Flanagan, Naruto’s US voice, about the success of the series. In response to the series popularity she said, “frankly it’s been great and Cartoon Network is very happy it’s still their #1 show for certain age groups.” However, even though it’s been a hit for Toonami Cartoon Network has not announced expanding over their 52 episode order, which would end the show right after the preliminary matches of the Chunnin exam. But there’s still hope! “52 is a big number for animation/anime rarely do they agree to do that many before it even hits the air! I’m pretty sure if it continues to be a huge fan favorite, they will continue to produce them here” Maile said.

Maile did step into an unfortunate fire when she took the role. When fans of the Japanese version heard her voice instead of Junko Takeuchi’s they we’re quite surprised. Twenty episodes later it seems like the consensus has changed. “Since the show began airing, I have received mostly (90 percent maybe) positive feedback. I do read forums sometimes and fansites, so I know there is negative feedback, but that will always be the case and I hope that my Naruto grows on them!” Maile also mentioned the difficulty of being an anime voice actress instead of doing other animation. “I do other animation and it’s a cake walk compared to anime and dubbing. (In animation) You are usually originating the character unless you are doing the series of something they did a movie about already. Either way, anime is much more difficult because of the mouth flaps.”

If you’ve been watching the US dub you probably heard Naruto say “Believe it!” a lot, but that’s going to change in future episodes. “I don’t say believe it that much anymore. I think the fans will be happy to hear that, according to the fan sites!” Even though Naruto has a couple of catch phrases Maile has not heard any kids shouting them out loud. “Ha ha! Not yet if I do hear them say believe it I’ll probably run away”, she joked. Between dubbing the episodes Maile has also been working on the Naruto games. The first game where Maile is making an appearance is Naruto: Clash of Ninja, which is coming out for the Gamecube in March. She finished making a library of sounds for video games to use. About the video game experience she said, “They have you do multiple takes of lines and a lot of impacts, punches, falls, running, etc. and then you sign a bunch of paperwork!”

While Naruto is gaining popularity with the US broadcast on Cartoon Network, most of the fans started by watching fan subs of the Japanese broadcast. Fan subs have always been a double edged sword for anime localization studios like Viz. On one hand they’re the fan base that’s most likely to buy a lot of the merchandise and seed a show’s popularity. On the other hand they might not actually watch the USA broadcast since they’re so far ahead in the series. In regards to the fan sub community Maile had this to say, “I’m glad that people are big fans of the show, regardless. It’s hard, because people have been watching it that way for years, but at the same time the people who work for Naruto in Japan and the U.S. rely on this for their income, so I really hope they are fans of the Cartoon Network show even if they have already seen it otherwise.” Maile also gave us an insight on how the uncut Naruto DVDs are going to turn out. “I do some alternate lines and extra stuff for each episode. Just stuff that’s more "adult" a little harsher language. Like ‘I’ll rip your throat out’ or something instead of ‘I’m going to hurt you.’” This sounds promising for fans who have been following the series since it launched in Japan. The uncut DVD pack with an unedited English track, Japanese language track and subtitles is set for a release later this year.

We’d like to thank Maile for doing this interview with us and you can watch new episodes of Naruto at 9:00PM Saturday on Cartoon Network.

Pysche Says:

I’ve watched the fansubs and read the Naruto manga for a while now, and though some aspects of the Naruto dub do annoy me (I can’t comprehend why they translated “dattebayo” as “Believe it!” and I didn’t like that they cut out Sasuke and Naruto’s kiss in episode 3 when it was an innocent accident) for the most part it’s fairly well done as far as anime dubs go. Yes, I’m far ahead of the Toonami version, but it doesn’t make it less enjoyable to watch over, and it’s interesting to hear the American versions of the characters’ voices. It doesn’t surprise me at all that the show’s been successful - it’s time for something to fill in the gap now that the popularity of animes like Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh! are waning, and frankly I was expecting Naruto to be the show that did that.

Mike Thomas Says:

Hello Maile… I just wanted to let you know, despite all of the hate you get from Naruto sub elitists, that I am one of the few that LOVE your voice acting for the hit show Naruto :-D… My only dilemma is that Im a bit dissappointed that you guys are cutting back on Naruto’s catch phrase “Believe it!”… Although that may impress original fans, it slightly hurts us dub watchers… I, for one, love that catch phrase ;-J

After watching a couple subs, I’ve noticed that he says Dattebayo after almost *every* sentence :-C, but I guess it’s for the best… Anyway, again I love your work… keep it up!!

Beautiful Green Beast Says:

For the love of god, thank you Maile………for getting rid of the “Believe It” This is the worst catchphrase since Danny Phantom’s “I’m Going Ghost!” But now that you’re getting rid of it, I’ll watch the Naruto dub more often…..

I personally have no problem with your voice over, it does sound a bit like his japanese counter-part. But for other such characters as Sakura, Rock Lee, Kankuro, Temari, Neji, and Garra…………I have a definate problem….so thank you for at least sounding like the original…….

Matt Says:

Naruto sub fans are whiney! The dub is faithful!

John Says:

Matt is correct. They can’t accept the fact that Naruto has an english voice.

I really love your work on Naruto. You sound almost excactly like his japanese counterpart. Keep up the good work!

Anime Fan Says:

I seen both the fan sub and the americanised dub and I have to say some of the voices don’t seem right to me. I actually like the Naruto voice that Maile is supplying us with, but some of the other voices don’t seem like they’re quite there yet. Like Sasuke’s voice, he’s meant to be the cool one– yet his voice imo, doesn’t come across that way. And unfotunately neither does a lot of the other characters. But, yeah Naruto’s is probably the best if I’d have to choose.

But there is one thing that absolutely bugs me about the dub, the pronounciaction of “Naruto,” it kinda annoys me. If you listen to the japanese’s pronounciation and the american one, there’s a clear difference and after watching like 170 episode of the japanese pronounciation, it’s just always been the way “Naruto” has been pronounced to me. Oh well I’m done critising.

KageNaruto Says:

eh at first i ahted it but after a few eps i got used to it and i think its fine. the latest eps were really good. however my fav dub is probably tenten, even though she is such a minor character i think her voice is really good. but i think the way u did the voices for the past few eps are really good, so keep it up i guess. however i still prefer jap version and alwyas will(no offense)

Rico Says:

I like the way the series is going so far on Cartoon Network. I will keep watching and love the voice of all the chracters especially Naruto’s, Sasuke’s and Shino’s

Patrick Says:

I think she does a real good job as Naruto. I love the show. :) I want them to continue the show.

Joana Says:

I love the show Naruto it totally rocks and I always watch it when it’s on. I only wish it would show on more than one day (well for where I live it shows on for one day). I hope they continue the show and will show it on more.

Jordan Says:

I started out watching the first few episodes on toonami. At first the voices seemed great since I never had watched any Japanese episodes. But iafter awhile I started watching the japanese version a whole lot and I ended up getting to the filler episodes. let me tell you soemthing, after watching almsot all of the naruto shows in japanese in a short period of time it’s not that easy to see it changed. I was watching episode 20 of Naruto at my dad’s right after watching a japanese episode that I had downloaded.
I was very surprised at some of the voices like Rock Lee’s and Neji’s. Although after watching the whole episode I got a bit used to them. I actually am starting to think the voice suits Naruto pretty good. Although the believe it’s do get a bit repetitive. I still can’t get over Sakura’s voice though. It just doesn’t seem to fit. Well I guess i’ll just go back and download the last 10 episodes of Naruto now.

Blake Says:

I’m glad to hear the ending of “believe it.” I have read the manga and seen ever Japanese version. I understand Japanese so the fansubs get in the way for me, so I just get the RAWS. But dattebayo really is the same thing as the normal form of desu, or is ajust a emphasized form of be/am/is, and rarely used in actual japanese conversation.

I like the boice of naruto, most of the time, as long as I ignore the “believe it.” Also hinata’s is perfect, it sounds just like the japanese one.
The voices I really do not like are Uchiha Sasuke, Aburame Shino, and Gai’s especially. I also don’t agree with taking away of the salutations -san, -chan, -kun. also if you’re reading this maybe you can tell them about this. I don’t think they should’ve translated the jutsu names.

Kage Bunshin no jutsu sounds better than shadow clone justsu. Also what about when some of the other jutsu’s are shown, with long names, that when translated sound stupid and are even longer. Anyway i still like re watching the dubs to see what’s like. i also see in the english manga they changed lee’s primary lotus into forward lotus. What about the secondary lotus, i wonder what they’ll cal that.

Mke Says:

Ive been watching Fan Subs since episode 2 and loved Naruto….I waited to see the Dub on CN and saw it ….at first the dubbing was a little…ehhh bad..but it seems as though many of the actors have grown into the parts. Im glad Believe it is going away… Dattebayo was always much better…because Naruto in the Jap dub said it alot more casually.

Ive grown to actually like the dub voice as Naruto..(Though I still cannot grow in to Sasukes voice and The current Lee’s voice has been horrible soo far..)
I hope the current actors that are doing well such as Gaaras actor and Narutos actor keep up the good work and I hope Sasukes actor and Kankuros actor pick up the slack..

Priest Says:

I have no problem with Naruto’s dub voice (great job) the (believe it) has to go however… everyone else in the series so far isn’t that bad except shino (the bug boy’s) dub is terrible -

Caljin Says:

Wow so far I luved the dub version and i think you fit Naruto’s voice very well.. I also like Hinata’s,Sasuke’s, and Konohamru’s voices. I think it’s amusing to hear you so say beileve it. Anyway keep up the good work.

snake Says:

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee naruto

Tuigi Says:

I think you guys still need to work a lot on your emotions when you speak, when you shout Uzumaki Naruto Barrage for example, I just cant feel it in your voice or any other voice actor for that matter. In terms of emotions in the voice I think the japanese do a much better job and this is why people like the japanses voices over the U.S dub it’s not because they heard it first but because they know how to make you feel it if you see what i mean.
as for Naruto himself i dunno he’s just not the same whitout his little voice and over teh top shouting (which needs work in the DUB)
i know the voice actors are trying to do a good job but it’s time they didn’t just see it as a cartoon and put some serious work into it.
look at the japanese the reference is not that far.

MalibuSunrise Says:

All right. I’m going to the tub and cut both of my arms. i should not have seen this page.

Kari Says:

Maile, your rendition of Naruto is absolutely PERFECT. I have to compliment you on your prononciation of Japanese names, too.
Sometimes the (written) dialogue isn’t so great, but you have to work with how the mouth is flappin.

Stupendous job. :) Keep up the great work, and I hope you stay with the show during its entire run.

no name. xP Says:

But I just don’t see why people hate the english Naruto so much, for me I LOVE IT! So does my freinds at school, like maybe you’ll see people dissing it at youtube.com. -_-;

Bilis Says:

The Naruto dub is great. Don’t listen to the sub-only elitists, since most of the time they’re the ones who download fansubs/scans without EVER supporting the legal releases.

Plus, there’s an uncut DVD on the way, so… there…

Great job on Naruto, Maile. The “Believe It” fit like a glove, in my opinion. You and the other voice actors are doing a bang-up job. I look forward to more of the series and hope you guys continue to be successful. Keep it up!

Kage Kumori Says:

I’ve hadn’t seen the japanese version and still thought the voice was wierd at first but now I like it

Anonymous Says:

hi

Garth Says:

I have at least 20 friends who hate the dubs and only watch the subs yet have spent somewhere between $200 and $700 on Naruto stuff. I am not a “elitist” of any kind, I dislike some voices in Jap. that do not match characters in anime, it all depends on if the voice fits the character. I myself dislike the Naruto anime due to the fact that the animation outside of fight sceans was shoddy at best. I have still spent in excess of $100 on manga and naruto games though. I think that VIZ chose poorly with most of the english voices, yet I dont really care about that. Cartoon network KILLED the series though!! Not only was their editing excessive but it was pointless at times. I take the Mark Twain view of censorship and what they did to Naruto is unforgivable! The voice acting does not matter to me but many of the best parts in Naruto dont exist in the english version, it has contributed to my boycotting of all VIZ and CN. stuff though.

Tanzania citizen(Fyonda) Says:

I think the japanese texts are much better since they are original. The english kind of forges some things or miss some things due to the cartoon being made for japanese. What i mean to say is that the mouth movement wont be perfect so they should have continued talking in there japanese voices and continue using english subtitles.Thats cause if peoiple want to know whats going on they will definetly keep downloading from dattebayo and get used on japanese voices.

Dace Says:

Hello. I like your voice on the program and i only see dubbed episodes cause i dont like those subtitel thing and just in case you are wandering i do love believe it and if you say youll run away if you hear some body say it then do so now cause i say it all the time, Beleive it!, at first i didnt like it that much but as my fever whent p i started it saying it normally. I am practically just a starter at seeing naruto but i want to continue to do so tough i cant find a good enough website that has the episodes i need in english cause finding them subbed its easy. I have saw from episode 1 to 11 and now looking for episode 12 but i cant find it cause you tube doesnt have it yet either :(

Anyway keep the good job up and if you know where to find episode 12 and up dubbed then mail me to dace_elemental@hotmail.com you will make me very happy, Beleive it!. :)

Michael Jaramillo Says:

hey everyone yo yea i have been watching naruto on the both versions
and too tell u guys the truth the english dub is not that good. But at the same time i like that america is now showing naruto and i have been waiting for the longest time.

Hekka Says:

At last yu guys gat done with that ( “believe it”) anyways i love naruto
by the yu guys need to do something with the shino’s voice…..it does not suit him…well i still love naruto so good bye!

temari-san Says:

the english verison is soooooooooooooooo messing up naruto! i’m hella pissed. i heard they’re not going to put the fact that jiraya is a pervert! naruto is for mature young adults, so why is it on little kid programming! if they’re not gonna air the right version (the japanese verison) then dont air it at all! i mean come on! at least get the voices for the characters right! well…the only charcters that have good voices are naruto, sasuke, sakura, kakashi, rock lee, and hinata. well despite all of this i still love naruto!
later

sake-san Says:

I am so happy they put naruto in english version because I thought the japenese version was chessy!!! And i’m happy they didnt put jiraya as a pervert because if they put it like that it would seem to chessy!!!
And the childrens program is still as awsome as the other adult version no matter what a spoiled person says !!! but either way i still love naruto the show!!!!
ps.ILL SEE YOU LATER ON THE SHOW NARUTO!!!!!

yungenuf2watchnaruto Says:

First of all, this show is originally for kids anyway. What? Aren’t most of u way too (emphasis on “too”) old to be watching these kinds of shows. Let me guess. What are most of u? Um … grad students … what are u guys doing here critizing a show for kids and r ur names serious? Geez ya’ll need a job … or maybe even a life i mean c’mon. And would u please stop talking about the Japanese this and that. This is America! Gosh Darn It, now deal with it u bunch of S. O. B. ’s. (Pardon my French.) Yeah i get that it originated in Japan but its airing in the US. So like seriously if they did have the japanese dub or sub or w/e u guys call it, it wouldnt be as appealing or as popular as it is now because i mean if u think about it, more than half of the people who watch it are kids and not just crazy japanese anime wannabe obsessed adults who go on these types of sites to critisize about how bad the show is. Ugh gosh dont be so ignorant. And yeah i get it might be better if it was in Japanese, but we (kids/americans) wouldn’t be able to understand any of the things they were saying and we are Definatley (with a capital “D”) not going waste our precious youth reading some retarded sub titles OK. Toonami is for kids not for u cry baby adults. And another thing, most of the kids who watch it dont even know english very well let alone understand some japanese and read “sub titles”. So take ur dumbutt criticizim and s.t.f.u. :) Thank u and have a nice day. FYI: the voices they use for the American version of Naruto are just Dandy!!

TyDyeTalent Says:

I have been hooked on it since the day I heard it from my boyfriend. XD
I mean he was the one who got me hooked in the start. THANK YOU DAVID! -hugs-
I happen to have fallen in love with both versions! It appeals to me because of the fast action fighting and the whole master plot.Makes it very interesting and yet, I am so amazed by it. The voices for the Japanese version I have to say are a little confusing to me, but I much enjoy the English dubbing. ;3 It rocks out loud!
I suppose I can live without the believe it,but I surely enjoy it any way it comes as long as I can see it! For sure! :3
Naruto is my favorite character on the show because I think he is hilarious and very hyper, much like myself. XD He is also very determined and outgoing. Though sometimes his downfall is being guidable and so hyper. XD Again, like me. Anyway’s! I just wanted to drop by and give a shout out of love to you!

that i am Says:

I first saw the dubbed version of Naruto and I got hooked into it but then I wanted to see why everyone was criticizing the dubbed version so I checked the Japanese version. I think both of are great because Naruto is a great show. However, the Japanese voice actors give more feeling when they talk. I like both of them and I hope to see Naruto grow more popular.

Christina Says:

i love naruto in both versions!!! chaaa!!!

Christina Says:

keep up the awesome work! i love all the voices, especially narutos and zabuzas, they are perfect!! you sound amazing!!! really! oh, and i hope that they dont stop at episode 52 i would be devastated, they cant do that! please email me with updates at yogi221@hotmail.com! love, love, love ur work, and i understand, why they wouldnt call jiraiya a pervert! parents would be infuriated! but, i dont understand how thay are going to get around naruto tempting him to train with his sexy no jutsu….please keep me updated and it would be a pleasure to speak with you! chyaaa! my fav show in the world!!!

eye Says:

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!! i LOOOOOOOOOVVE your voce acting and all i even like believe it a lot(i say it all the time) and yeah your awsome and i was wondering dont u get free stuff if u have kids and stuff and if so adopt me it would be sooooooo cool(just kiddin) (about adopting part not the cool part)and my bigger brother goes(he doesnt like naruto) sais im gonna ninja kick u in the face “believe it”. and yeah its cool though and yeah ur the best “believe it” and also do u get offended when u say “harem(sexy)jutsu?oh and ur the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE UR ACTING

eye Says:

shaly Says:

i agree whit yungenuf2watchnaruto these criticizing the english version is stupid becouse it is airing in u.s.a. i what to see the episode on t.v not read it . so excuse me if u baboons dot like the english version, but we do so.if u dont like the english version then dont whatch it its as simple as that even u baboons can understand that.enjoy your jap version and leave the english version alone.on like u guys we arent as stupet as to read whats going on, we perfor to whatch the action not read about it.

shaly Says:

excuse my spelling im not as good.sorry

Lawliet Says:

Let me start off by saying this, I hate Narutos English voice. I think it’s wayy too raspy but i am glad I no longer have to here the infamous “beleive it” which made my ears want to bleed. Sauskes voice is decent however due to the correct pernounciation of names. There could have been better voice acters for EVERYONE on Naruto. Overall, I honestly have to give the anime Naruto, a C-. Bad Viz…bad.

Lawliet Says:

@ Shaly. are you retarted? (and whats with you and baboons?)

Since you seem to want me to be honest… I have to say I absolutely hate the english dubs.
It’s okay for the littler kids, but for me, I liked the Japanese better. But apperantly the English think we are stupid, and think they have the need to explain everything.
And the catch phrase ‘Believe it’. Thank GOD it isn’t being said anymore. It makes my ears bleed.
I am afraid to hear my english voice once Shippuuden is started.

I am really wondering why the translations are so sporadic. They translated the Jutsu names, dropped the Salutations-san,kun,chan….but have kep the japanese names for some things-Sharingan,Jutsu,Byakugan. Finally for the love of god, could somebody be in the booth with these VA’s so that you don’t have 10 different pronounciations of the japanese words they did keep, Sakura’s is especially good for this.

ensei-anbi Says:

i think you are awsome at voicing naruto!! i enjoy watching both english and japanese versions of this anime because its just sooo good:D you manage to carry off the cheeky husky voice the japanese naruto has with great ease and i hope you will continue with your work despite what others think. ^^
