Microsoft halting expanding the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list?

Recently Peter Moore hinted in an interview over at Kiziko Games that there might not be many more titles included in the Xbox 360’s backwards compatibility catalog. Moore said, “Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It’s a very complicated thing… very complex work. I’m just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible.“ Sure the Xbox 360 has a couple hundred titles already working for it, that’s great. Some of the key Xbox titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Splinter Cell and the Halo series are playable on the 360. However, the list is missing a few classics that might remain Xbox exclusives such as:

Jet Set Radio Future

Panzer Dragoon Orta

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Shin Megami Tensei Nine

Dino Crisis 3*

Soul Calibur II (well if you want to play as Spawn)

* OK it’s not really a classic

able to play halo 2... no big deal
  • Well, I for one care about BC.
I was considering buying one over an old Xbox if they would expand the list some. JSFR and Orta being big sellers for me.

Between this and the fact that the 360 can't play divx/xvid files natively, I'm pretty much forgetting about it.

But now I guess I'll just plan on getting a 2nd hand XB and not let MS make any money off me.

This is why I kept my old Xbox. I had no faith in MS to fully make every game backwards compatible. Add to the fact I have games like Steel Battalion w/ the controller and accessories like the Silent Scope rifle and I knew I was keeping my Xbox. I wanted to play JSRF and PDO in hi-def, but I guess it'll never happen.

I'm in the same boat as racketboy,I was thinking of buying a 360 over an old xbox. Now I will probably not. I always wait quite a while before buying a new console, heck I still havent played all the games I want to on PS2. I kind of thought it was going to go this way, I mean why would microsoft do what they said. Oh well.

It's really difficult, but somehow PS2 managed to play *nearly* all ps1 games... and they in theory will have all of ps2 and ps1 for ps3... but like he said "Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It’s a very complicated thing… very complex work." I'm going to guess that MS didn't have any protocol about how to code the games and that made it difficult to port games that used the hardware in odd ways. At least that's why the PS was "easy" to make backwards compatable.

backwards compatiblity and reading their once promised 100% percent backwards compatibility was one of the reasons I bought the 360. It's very important to me. I want my yager and my godzilla games and xyanide (and all the sega titles would be great too.)(etc.)
  • A Morrowind Fan
I think that they should at least put Morrowind on the list. It was a great game and should continue to be played in the future for those who sold their Xbox to get the 360.

“Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility."

I think that means, "MS is not concerned with making the games backwards compatibile." Becasue obviously TONS of people out there are not only POed that they didn't, but some, as seen above, did not put $400 into their new system because of it.

Besides the Xbox gaming community will eventually make a mod or something to run all the games from Xbox...it'll just be a while.

So "Nobody is concerned anymore" my big brown bahookie.

Hey Microsoft, ya see this fistful of cash? See it? See it?

It's not going to you for any product at all (certainly not a 360) until I can play every XBox game I own on the 360, with no caveats or problems or the other trickle of issues that are asterixed on some of the games on that very limited list. Deal with it, you lying money-grubbing jerks. If I sound rude, it's because you flat out lied, and I don't take kindly to that. People don't care about BC? Yeah, right....what did you do, survey the five people around you who didn't feel like working on it anymore?

How can Nintendo Wii and PS3 get the BC so right and you get it so wrong? BC should have been priority one, and if anything hindered it you should have stopped and retooled. It should not have been an afterthought.

Imagine buying a new DVD player that doesn't play your old movies, or a CD changer that doesn't play your CDs. Doesn't make any sense, does it?

After the holidays I'll be laughing it up with a shiney new Wii, playing new games and old, and having a grand old time. I was more than willing to buy a 360 with my Wii, but now, not so much...I'll give the money to a company that actually cares about it's history and BC. You all have fun making up statistics about what people want and don't want.

    Wait
    the wii is backwards compatible?
    how will that even work?
wouldnt that be even more work than making xbox games compatible
xbox360 and xbox at least have similar controls
the wii and gamecube are so different it would seem impossible
    but i dont really know

gotta give micro one thing.... they listend... over all the posts ( im not sure how old this one is...) but the biggest 2 crys where for Panzer and Radio... what are the 2 major games on the newest list?....
