Rumor control: No Final Fantasy XIII in 2007?

The Last Boss sent us a tip that came from a Famitsu interview where Tetsuya Nomura mentions five Square-Enix releases this year. He named four of the five titles: Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix +, It’s a Wonderful World, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and a blu-ray disc with Final Fantasy Advent Children. Now before anyone jumps the gun and says “that’s all from Square-Enix?!?” all of those titles have something in common, Tetsuya Nomura’s involvement. Square-Enix already announced other games coming out in 2007 and it’s just the beginning of the year. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War (PSP), Final Fantasy I: Anniversary Edition (PSP), Final Fantasy II: Anniversary Edition (PSP), Concerto Gate (PC), Heroes of Mana (DS), Front Mission 1st (DS), Dragon Quest Swords (Wii), Dragon Quest IX… do I need to keep listing games? Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (DS), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (DS) and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) are also supposedly scheduled for a 2007 release too.

So what’s the speculative “fifth” game that Nomura-san is working on? I have absolutely no clue, but it doesn’t mean that Final Fantasy XIII isn’t coming out either. It’s just not mentioned. Also there’s no real source on this mysterious interview and even if there was a source I’d like to read it before making a concrete statement. We all know magazine pages can be deceiving. Remember the fake Space Channel 5 Wii “scan”? On the other hand I tend to agree with Fronz that Final Fantasy XIII probably won’t come out, but that’s just my (and his) opinion. Square-Enix has a tendency to announce titles way, way, way before they come out and it’s likely that Final Fantasy XIII won’t arrive until 2008. I’ll leave you with one thought to think about… it is the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy this year and you can bet that Square-Enix has something big in store for it. Could it be a remake of Final Fantasy VII? Maybe that’s the unnamed title that Nomura-san is working on.
