Chrono Trigger Remake To See Fruition? Mehbeh.

By Rolando . February 9, 2007 . 1:49pm

Chrono Trigger Remake To See Fruition? Mehbeh.C3 (or Cubed 3) recently posted the entire transcript of their interview with Square-Enix VP Hiromichi Tanaka. Some of you may remember hearing about this interview a while back where it was hinted that a Chrono Trigger remake was plausible yet never likely to happen, with the tone suggesting the series is forever remained to be dormant. After reading the entire interview, Tanaka’s tone towards a Chrono Trigger remake or even a sequel seems to imply something a bit different. Quote:

"AR: *Ahem* Recently Chrono Cross was mentioned in an interview with you and you stated there would not be a sequel to Chrono Cross because it would be too difficult to get the original team together again…? Does this rule out any possibility for the Chrono series in the future at all? Because Nintendo fans are always asking about a Chrono Trigger remake…

HT: There’s still a possibility, but since the main director is not working for Square Enix now – he’s working on other titles in a different company, Namco Bandai, it’s a bit difficult to ask him to come back and be the head of a team again. And also, Kato-san is working on the fourth game in the Mana series. So there’s still a possibility that he might think he might want to make it again…"

Emphasis on there’s still a possibility.

Since Masato Kato was the original story planner/scenario writer behind Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, it may be possible for a Chrono Trigger remake/sequel to actually see fruition. Of course, an official announcement is much better than a rumor. It’s a shame Chrono Cross gets such a bad reputation. It truly is a wonderful game and does serve as a worthy sequel (even though its considered more of a stand alone new entry in the Chrono series) to Chrono Trigger…as with some things, it just takes a little digging to see.

Here’s hoping Chrono Trigger does see a remake or sequel.

If they’re going to remake CT, I’d rather them do it with the flashiest graphics possible at the time, and go all out making it as purely awesome as they could. I don’t think a straight port or even a slightly-enhanced one would really be worth the effort.

I’m not saying they should remake it for PS3 or anything, but putting it on a handheld doesn’t excite me. Chrono Trigger just isn’t THAT kind of game, at least to me. Between the SNES original, the PS1 port and possibly being on the virtual console on the Wii, we have plenty of opportunities to play the original version. I’d like to see something new if they’re going to bother to remake it.

That being said, this article might as well have white space next to the grainy .gif of Crono up there. There’s absolutely nothing NEW here, just that it would be difficult to get the old team back together again. We’re no closer to a remake now than we were months or even years ago. The response “There’s still a possibility” would’ve been given if they had been asked at any point, most likely.

“I don’t think a straight port or even a slightly-enhanced one would really be worth the effort.”

Ports are relatively inexpensive to produce, which lets studios make a quick profit. Square has been employing this strategy for years with its sundry Final Fantasy ports. Reliving past glory is probably the best that Square can do, considering the creative bankruptcy that has plagued it for years.

    ^^^

I understand that for Square-Enix a port would be an inexpensive and minimal-effort deal. But I don’t really think it would quite be what the hordes of gamers clamoring for a remake would be looking for. It seems pointless to do a lazy port of something that could potentially be huge if the effort was put into it. Especially after they closed down that nice-looking fan 3D Chrono Trigger project, if all we got out of the whole mess was a GBA port it would seem like a huge let-down.

Seeing as how even a few vague words can set off fanboy’s wildest dreams (see this article), it really WOULD seem like a waste of effort to port it, even if it didn’t cost Square too much and sold somewhat well.

Actually, I guess if they remade it on the DS in 3D like with Final Fantasy III, it wouldn’t be too bad. But there’s something very appealing to me about Chrono Trigger in cutting-edge graphics with remastered music and tons of bonus content added in.

To be fair slimequest, the context in which he says “there’s still a possibility” in this article (if you took the time to read all of it by the way) is completely different from casually saying “there’s still a possibility” and how it was reported before when media sites were only given a small transcript of the interview. In this entire interview, detailing Square-Enix’s recent ventures, plans, hopes, and other things, he was asked about Chrono Trigger because it just so happens that a Chrono Trigger remake/port/sequel is the one thing many fans in Japan wanted (based on a poll taken) from Square-Enix this year. His response isn’t a harsh as once implied previously; if anything, its a bit more lax and considerate and does have a sort of probability, perhaps minimal at best, of happening. That doesn’t make me a fanboy for reporting speculation nor was I even coming off as a fanboy. I apologize if it seems I was, but I’m far from that.

I agree wholeheartedly that a port of Chrono Trigger would be pointless for us fans. But that doesn’t mean that it would be a waste of effort. Whether an effort is worthwhile depends on the perspective of the person or organization expending the effort. If a port would be profitable for Square, then it could hardly be said to be a waste of effort.

Roli O, yes I read the article fully. I didn’t use the term “fanboy” in a negative manner, it’s just the way the article title and content struck me when I read it. Taking information that, while a little more positive in some ways than what we’ve heard before, and putting any kind of tangible faith that a CT sequel/port might be in the works in the future based on it just kind of sounds like something desperate fans of a game who would do anything to see it happen would do. That’s a fanboyish kind of reaction, in my opinion. Maybe “overblown” is perhaps a better word, since I know the term “fanboy” can have negative connotations to some people.

I’m not saying I’m not desperate for it myself, but I think having the article discuss interesting new information about the state of the Chrono series might have been a better approach than basing it on the possibility of a remake. That being said, it was good to hear an update about the status of the Chrono series. I’m not truly complaining or bashing the article, really, just giving my opinion of what I thought after reading it. I think you might be able to see how some people might get the reaction I did.

Also, I guess after playing the game dozens of times through on the SNES and a few times on the Playstation version, I’d have very little interest in playing the exact same game over again on a portable. As I said, something different would excite me, personally. I really have no doubt that some kind of port or remake will eventually come out, it’s just a matter of time, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that they do it justice when they do.

While I would be thrilled and all to get a Chrono sequel, I’m not really sure how a Chrono sequel would turn out, canon-wise.

One of my beefs with Chrono Cross was that it was clearly a stand-alone game (based off of Radical Dreamers for the Super Fami Satellaview), yet Chrono Trigger was retconned to shoehorn the sequel into the continuity (witness the ending of CT on the PS port versus the 16-bit version). This sort of messing around reaches the level of “Han shot first” in my book.

Will we see a similar retconning if a Chrono sequel comes out? Who knows. It will probably have to exist in an altogether different world, seeing as CC practically removed any chance that it can be linked to the good old kingdom of Guardia (It’s still possible though, kinda like Hyrule I guess). But to me, the Chrono series still consists of Chrono Trigger and nothing else. Chrono Cross is the Zelda 2 that I shall pretend never existed. :)

Heck, Chrono Cross didn’t even feature much in the way of time travel or some such nonsense, which is kind of silly considering the word “Chrono” in the title, but I digress. :D
