Beautiful rumor: Beautiful Katamari

By Spencer . March 18, 2007 . 4:18pm

Orange Lounge Radio who has a respectable track record (they nailed Konami’s 2006 lineup) for reporting rumors, discovered “Beautiful Katamari” on a video game distribution list. A Playstation 3 version with Sixaxis control and an Xbox 360 release is scheduled to come out on October 17 for $39.99. A month later on November 14 a Wii version will retail for $29.99. While this isn’t a crystal clear confirmation of the return of Katamari, it’s too promising not to discuss. Also when has Namco Bandai ever abandoned a popular franchise that they own? See how many Pac-Man games keep rolling out?

Really is a shame Katamari’s designer, Keita Takahashi has decided to abandon the franchise and move on with other careers in mind, but hopefully that won’t be enough to hamper the development of this game, if the rumors turn out to be true.

Also, nice to hear that Beautiful Katamari will be released at a budget price all around for the three next-gen consoles.

This is one third-party multiplatform title that won’t suffer because of graphical limitations, so this should be interesting to see how Namco makes use of the Wii remote and Sixaxis compared to the traditional analog controller of the 360.

I respect Takahashi’s decision to work on other things… whether he is or isn’t involved, if this exists, remains to be seen. They screwed up the PSP version, so maybe he’s working on it just so they don’t ruin it. I can certainly see that happening as I’m sure he’s emotionally attached to the work. He just has other ambitions than being ‘the Katamari guy’ – he doesn’t want to be creatively pigeon-holed…

Although the idea of a new game is exciting. I’m not sure whether I want Takahashi at the helm or not. Either way, I hope it’s great.
