Rumor Control: Soul Calibur coming to the Wii? Maybe, but not now

It’s hard to ignore all of the tips (thanks everyone!) about IGN’s podcast where they mention a fighting game coming to the Wii that is “gonna be some kind of crazy ass adventure game”. Wide speculation is that it is “Soul Calibur Adventures”. While that is tantalizing there is a more realistic possibility. Ganbarion has been developing One Piece fighting games for the Gamecube and about a week ago One Piece: Unlimited Adventure came out on the Wii. Guess what genre it was? Ganbarion’s game fits the description of a Gamecube fighting game that turned into “some kind of crazy ass adventure game.” We also mentioned that Namco Bandai might be bringing One Piece: Unlimited Adventure to North America too and the note on IGN seems to suggest a US release. The only thing that shakes the argument is the game "sold pretty well". The One Piece games weren’t blockbusters, but they sold enough to encourage Namco Bandai to make plenty of sequels. I wonder what "pretty well" is defined as….

I heard that. I doubt they are going to go into anything that isn’t sure of US shores. The funny thing is that One Piece: Round the Land was said to be coming to US right before 4kids picked it up. Now UA is said to be coming to the states, but now FUNi picks it up and says they aren’t working on the game. Both adventure games to suffer the same fate of the same series. I just find it amusing.

Hey, did you get Unlimited Adventure? I have heard lots of back and forth comments about gameplay. I hear it starts off kinda bad, but as you learn new moves it is great. I think IGN said it tricks you into thinking that gameplay is bad at first. I know lots of people who are loving the game. I can’t play it, but I am curious what you have to say about it.

  • Oh wow. A Soul Calibur game in the same vein as the quest modes in both SCII and SCIII? Sign me up! If its a new Soul Calibur fighting game for the Wii, then I’d be interested in knowing how the controls would work…either Wiimote style or classic controller style. Oh well

Whenever there’s a rumour around the Wii, it’s always Japan or North America. WHAT ABOUT EUROPE!! This region lock is really starting to piss me off. If there isn’t a modchip or something I may end up selling the damn thing.

SCIII adventure game would be very awesome. They should combine it with the character creation mode.

Well, the way I see things, whether this rumor turns out for Soul Calibur on Wii or Unlimited Adventure getting a localization job by Namco Bandai, it’s a win-win situation. I wouldn’t mind if both were confirmed, really.

Just as long as Soul Calibur 4 got confirmed in the process as well. After the third installment, I’ve been craving for a next-gen weapons based 3D fighter, and there’s no other contender than SC.

Online play would be a welcome addition if Namco added it this time around. Including the character customization mode, and the deep fighting system featured in the series, there would be unlimited replay value.
