Sega Vintage Collection titles disappearing on the ESRB imagesOne of the juicy tidbits of information from the ESRB pointed to the rumored Sega Vintage Collection where classic Genesis games would be playable on the Xbox 360. Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 were rated by the ESRB as Xbox 360 games. However, the ESRB updated their database and listings for these games are gone. While the ESRB is a good source for information on unreleased titles, a rating does not guarantee a game is going to come out.

Did Sega pull the plug on the vintage collection? Did the ESRB make a mistake? Or did Sega ask the ESRB to remove the listings to keep the service under wraps?

I have a feeling Sega is trying to cover this up by telling the ESRB to pull the ratings for the games they have planned for their Sega Vintage Collection. More than likely, they're trying to keep this under wraps as a way to reveal this "compilation" of sorts as a surprise in a later press release. Not much that will do at this point, considering there's been speculation that Sonic the Hedgehog and Ecco the Dolphin would wound up on XBLA eventually. It's only been Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 which has been recently "confirmed" by the ESRB.

Potentially, they made not want to steal away any thunder for future Virtual Console releases of these same titles. After all, why get the early VC games when waiting for the eventual XBLA installments make more sense. You get more bang for your buck that way, considering the option of online play for a game like SOR 2 is too much to pass up or the very tempting idea of achievements in Sonic 1.

Besides, it would be a bad move on Sega's part to completely give these future XBLA titles the axe. There's money to be made by investing their time and energy into converting Genesis classics on as many capable platforms as possible, with willing manufacturers waiting and ready to accept their support, including the PSN.
