Rumor: $50 price cut coming for the Xbox 360??

By Spencer . July 25, 2007 . 5:01am

xbox360.jpgThis gets double question marks because the source is the Hollywood reporter. Supposedly they have a retail insider who told them Microsoft will shave a cool $50 of the price of an Xbox 360 starting August 8. However, they did not specify which version will get the $50 price drop. Will it be the 20GB Pro package, the crippled core unit or all three SKUs? If their information is accurate the price drop comes at a good time, right before Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata.

Most likely the cripple.

I’m glad I waited to get a 360. I think the system will be much more reliable with the new chipsets this fall and the price drop is just icing on the cake for me. Hopefully I’ll pick up a revised and cheaper Elite before Christmas.

A $50 price cut, especially for the Core, would allow Microsoft to properly compete with Nintendo by having a SKU at $249.99. Although I imagine the 360 wouldn’t be flying off the shelves like the Wii, as most people are buying the console for the Wii remote and Wii Sports.

Personally, I think cutting the price would probably be most effective when Halo 3 ships on September 25. I think if Microsoft ever planned to cut prices this year, it should be closer to their big killer-app if they really want to move more consoles.

Still, a core out of the box is unplayable, since it has no hard drive to save game progress, Also be prepared to have a long ethernet cable since the wireless adapater costs another $100. Even though the wireless controller feels like a luxury, once you go wireless (Wii remote, PS3 sixaxis), it’s hard to go back to wired, you just feel restricted somehow.

And now Moore is no more, of course, $50 less is always good.
