Stranglehold, the first region locked Playstation 3 game?

By Spencer . July 31, 2007 . 12:44pm

shold.jpgNews popped up from the Midway Forums (thanks for the tip IceAmp!) about Stranglehold getting region coding on the Playstation 3. Previously all games on the Playstation 3 were not region encoded. Back at GDC '06 Sony made a big announcement by touting the Playstation 3 as a region free console. The likely culprit which led to region locking is the bundled blu-ray movie “Hardboiled” that comes with the special edition of Stranglehold. However, both versions of Stranglehold are region coded. If this news is true, Stranglehold is likely to be a region 1 game, which means it will still work on Japanese and North American PS3s. Sorry Europe.

Also in news from a parallel universe, the Xbox 360 version of Stranglehold is going to be region free.

I was surprised at first as I forgot both the US and Japan are in the same region for Blu-Rays, unlike DVDs. Good thing it doesn’t affect us importing even if they decide to do region-lock, I’m still hoping they would get rid of the PS2 region-lock w/ future updates, my TV doesn’t have enough component inputs..

wait, are japan and the US really both considered region 1 for games? that doesn’t sound right to me.

either way …

BOO! HISS!

Spencer Says:

@thaKingRocka - Sony changed the region deal for blu-ray movies

Region 1: Americas, Japan, Korea (North & South), Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia (i.e. Singapore).

Region 2: Europe, Middle East, Africa, Greenland, Australia and New Zealand.

Region 3: India, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia.

Pichi Says:

It does effect PAL gamers who like to import. :(

bo_gilet Says:

Most import websites are forbidden to sell Sony’s import from Asia so it doesn’t really matter anyway. Besides, the PAL version of Stranglehold will be released very soon after the US version.

Sure about that?

Its Sony Europe that doesn’t seem to like imports, IIRC. They went after some console company selling Asian PSPs to Europe before the official debut.

Aoshi00 Says:

And may the dedicated Lik-sang rest in peace… Got nothing against the games, but dang the Sony bastards..

>>The importer

It concerns Asian retailers. Look closely on PlayAsia and YesAsia webpages:

This item is not available for shipping to
# European Union
# Iceland
# Liechtenstein
# Norway

So yes I’m pretty sure about that. :)
As for Nscx and the like they are located in the United States, their average retail price plus shipping is way to high when you order from Europe so there’s no point ordering from them.
