The first part of my chat with Lesley Mathieson from High Impact Games was focused on reader questions regarding the PlayStation 2 version of Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters. After we took care of those we switched gears to Secret Agent Clank, High Impact Games’ second PSP title and a branch off the Ratchet family tree. The game stars Clank dressed in a tux and he has to figure out why Ratchet was imprisoned at the start of the game. Unlike many of the other titles starring Ratchet, Secret Agent Clank’s focus is strictly a single player experience.
I heard Secret Agent Clank doesn’t have multiplayer.
It doesn’t. Clank’s gameplay is radically different from what it was in the Ratchet & Clank series so we really needed to focus on it being a single player game. Maybe in future installments we can include multiplayer.
Does Clank turn into Giant Clank?
Giant Clank will make an appearance.
I saw Quark was in the game and for the first time he is in 3D. What kind of moves does he have?
His moves actually vary. He has his standard blaster. But beyond that Quark is telling a series of outrageously tall tale like stories, as he is telling them the gameplay changes. In one area he’s fighting this boss that Clank has taken down, but he is taking the credit for it. He describes how his blaster jammed and he ended up having to use a vacuum cleaner to defeat the enemy. The gameplay then changes mid-game to actually fighting the enemy with the vacuum cleaner. His gameplay is specific to what the part of the game you’re playing with him and what story he is telling at the moment.
That’s different from what I imagined. I was thinking Quark would have his own scenario like the other Ratchet games or maybe he would save Ratchet for a change. Speaking of Ratchet, he is also playable right?
Ratchet is playable. Ratchet is in prison for a crime he did not commit. While Clank is trying to solve how Ratchet ended up in there, Ratchet is now faced with all of his worse enemies that are in prison with him. He is going to have a number of battles in prison to hold them off.
So the story switches between the two [Ratchet and Clank]?
Yes. The story switches between the three characters. [Note: By three characters we are talking about Ratchet, Clank and Quark.]
Compared to Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is Secret Agent Clank a longer game?
I think it is a longer game.
I was talking about this yesterday with some people at the Playstation lounge… is there some connection between Secret Agent Clank and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction?
Well, some players in Tools of Destruction may have noticed if they went off in a side path it mentions Secret Agent Clank fans might appreciate this code and they are given a code. There is a slight overlap between the two games where you can get codes in each, if you know where to look.
There is a code in Secret Agent Clank for Tools of Destruction?
[laughs] Who came up with the idea for Secret Agent Clank? Was it Insomniac Games or was this from High Impact Games?
No, I mean the idea for Secret Agent Clank has been percolating for awhile, right? I mean he [Clank] made an appearance as a secret agent in Up Your Arsenal. Ever since then fans have been calling for it. We certainly came up with the idea for how the gameplay is structured here, this story and everything else, but of course the character originated in an earlier game.
It is probably too early to ask this, but do you imagine Clank will branch off and get his own series on a console title?
I suppose that depends on how the fans like this game. I hope they like it a lot.
Beyond the Ratchet & Clank franchise, do you think you will make your own IP [intellectual property] in the future?
I certainly think we are capable of it and we would be excited about doing it.
