Watch – 17 minutes of Persona 4

By Spencer . March 19, 2008 . 12:50pm

Packed in the Famitsu issue with the Persona 4 announcement was a DVD containing the first footage of the next installment in the Persona series. Thanks to the good graces of the internet the trailer is already online and it reveals plenty more about the game.

The clip begins with Igor sitting in the Velvet Room with a new assistant, Margaret. The main character moves in with a family and begins his new life in a more rural area of Japan. He is greeted by Chin, the girl in the green jacket, who is another Persona user and runs into Youske who is wrestling with a garbage can. Youske has the mouse-like Persona, Jiraiya, found in the scans.

Once the three characters melt into their TVs on a rainy night they meet a bear who appears to be the same character giving Fuuka-like tips during battle. Speaking of battles the footage all the way at the end shows combat and three unnamed characters. There is a girl with glasses who uses maragi, an older looking guy with shades and a skeleton Persona who casts zionga and character wearing a blue cap. Also in the spirit of a certain dog in Persona 3 the bear fights too.

The vibe I get from the trailer and the scans is more of the same, but I'm not complaining! I'm anticipating a new storyline, misty night murders and 60 hours of dungeons.

I don’t know if this is painfully obvious or not, but if you take a close look, it seems that to bring out the Personae in this game, you don’t use an Evoker, but the main characters don some sexy glasses.

Basically, glasses are a key accessory — and Chin looks much better in them =P

@Nick – Not to me! I noticed the Evokers were gone, but didn’t notice that everyone was wearing glasses. Thanks for pointing that out! In retrospect it may make sense with the whole getting sucked into the TV thing. Or maybe the glasses are a symbol for seeing through into an alternate reality?

Wii port, Wii port, Wii port.

With games so late in the PS2 lifespan… Someday Atlus will leave us in the crap (as in, no translation) and it’s not like PS2 is still selling like mad in Japan too compared to other systems.

The trailer looks good though, WANT.

ooo, i cant wait for this one, thx for the upload

  • benjamin

The battle system looks the same as P3′s, which is great ‘cuz P3′s system was the best I’ve ever used in an RPG.

  • laharsama

Coot, I can´t wait an english version.

Atlus still stuck in the past, they should developed P4 for Next-gen like R&D are doing with Shin Megami Tensei IV for PS3

  • Pedro Silva

^ they should have developed it for the Wii ^_^

  • billeta

lol at everyone called the ps2 the past.

  • Pedro Silva

^ I did and I am not laughing; PS2 is the past; the real top tiers (system sellers) are gone and Sony gave it a big disadvantage at taking the backwards compatibility from newer PS3′s, screwing what could be a “supported transition” (does this make sense? atlus knowing that making a PS2 game it was accessible elsewhere in 2006 hardware too)

I stand by what I said though, I don’t think PS2 should be primary platform for this one at this point in time. But oh well… Not such a bad business decision as I’ve seen some lately (pretty clear they’re milking assets who are already done from Persona 3), and I have a PS2 so it’s not that bad. I’d still rather have a Wii version though.

Ha-ha Velvet limo. Igor’s got a new piece of eye candy in Margaret. Visiting him now will feel like meeting a pimp. I love it.

Hmmm, not sure how I feel about P4 now that I’ve watched the trailer. Though some things I saw look like an improvement over P3 (environments, a couple of minigames, etc.), overall I’m seeing more of the same except not as compelling. I’ll wait until closer to release for final judgment, but right now I’m thinking I’ll skip this and wait for a truly next-gen Persona.

@ Spencer — I like your idea of using them as a way to “see” into an alternate dimension! I’m very excited to hear more about this and I’ll be counting on you to keep us up to date! =D

  • LittleOni

My only concern is will I be able to kick some evil ass as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper?

  • BakuraUchiha

@Nick Doerr – yeah what you said! i cant wait to see how Atlus turns this new glasses idea into an innovation. To everyone who thinks that p4 will be like p3 should take a deeper look at the glasses. Those will definetly be the key difference between the two and i hope that atlus will be able to implement some innovative ideas with these new mediums for persona summoning. All in all…im going to wait until a later date to truly interpret everything, although ill definetly buy it because i like the battle system and the story.
