I mentioned Dungeon of Windaria before mainly because the source material is such odd choice. Mystery dungeon games don’t need licenses. Izuna and Shiren are fine without anime co-stars. To be fair, the recently released Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness is a counter-example, but it doesn’t look like Compile Heart is doing much with the Windaria setting.
Izu and Jill are playable characters. They wander through random dungeons. Canes throw magic spells. Sounds familiar? Dungeon of Windaria looks like every other roguelike out there. An unfortunate predicament considering the plethora of mystery dungeon games on the Nintendo DS. If there were none (or maybe one) Compile Heart would have a fighting chance. Maybe they should have allocated the funds used to license Windaria towards fleshing out the gameplay.

Don’t forget about Dramatic Dungeon Sakura Taisen ~ Kiri Arugatame ~… It came out on March 19 and it’s a total rip-off/clone of the Mystery Dungeon engine. But it’s from Sega to be fair (they did fund the latest Shiren games)
There’s also a DS entry in Global A’s “Dungeon Maker” series that looks like it’s anime-based, but not sure if it’s using licensed characters. Too bad I can’t post links or images here!
Here’s to hoping we’ll get Etrian Odyssey manga/anime one day! Though I betcha there’s a bunch of doujin out there… FOE, FOE …
@LordGek -
@jeffx - Ah yes Dungeon Maker DS. That’s actually a spin off of Dungeon Maker Haunting Ground where players get to make dungeons. I hear it’s pretty neat, but I haven’t picked up a copy of it. Oh yeah and you and other SE regulars can post links… someone just has to approve them to prevent spam. If I didn’t have a link blocker there would be way too many spam comments to delete ![]()

Hey! This is no Chunsoft Mystery Dungeon rip off…I mean, look, they put the level map on the bottom touch screen so, see, it’s totally different.
