Searching for Square Enix’s “Last Hope”

We’re fresh out of Dragon Quest DS remakes to associate Square Enix new trademarks with. So, what could the Last Hope be for? A subtitle for Star Ocean 4? Nah, that’s too reminiscent of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Perhaps the Last Hope is the US title for Nanashi no Game, the Square Enix horror game where the protagonist plays a cursed RPG. It’s a striking difference from the literal translation, Nameless Game, but it feels feasible. Maybe it’s something brand new? Maybe, as with all trademarks, it might never be used. Square Enix never got around to releasing Code Age Commanders, which was trademarked in the USA.

Post your best guess in the comments. The last time a Siliconera commenter wisely deciphered Chapters of the Chosen as the Dragon Quest IV subtitle so I leave it in the hands of our wise community.

new name for the last remnant? but I wouldn’t rule out a new SO4 subtitle, regardless of the SW reference.

FoliathR Says:

Hmm I can’t link this to any existing or upcoming Japanese titles, so I would guess this is a new and original game.

“The Last Hope” was the subtitle for Torneko 2’s US localization… maybe a DS rerelease?

Mazen Says:

Enix did have that name copyrighted for Torneko: The Last Hope 10 years ago , but I feel its a new The Last Remnant name.

Archer Says:

SE marketed Last Remnants internationally (Since they did stressed how it would be the first simultaneous wolrdwide release from Square-Enix) , so that’s unlikely.

Valkyrie Profile DS maybe?

Lord Gek Says:

Just as previously mentioned, Torneko 2 had the subtitle of “The Last Hope”. We never got Torneko 3 PS2 or GBA here. It would be SO COOL if we were getting some cool Torneko for the DS!

Spencer Says:

@Everyone - Thanks for all the awesome feedback and ideas. I know the trademark sounds really similar to the Last Remnant, but Square Enix spent so much money on marketing the Last Remnant as an international game I just can’t imagine them changing the name of it. Also they trademarked the Last Remnant awhile ago.

Now the Torneko connection though.. that’s brilliant! Enix did publish Torneko and it is tied into the whole Dragon Quest universe too. Hmm… Square Enix has Torneko: The Last Hope registered too. Maybe this is just a protective trademark?

jeffx Says:

probably protective cause I don’t see this slated as a PS3-to-PSP re-release. otherwise it’s a pretty smart reaction from jarrod indeed. I did enjoy the original a ton, though! very much looking forward to Chocobo Dungeon as well.
