Game Center CX isn't like the Japanese version of the Angry Video Game Nerd. He just reviews some of the most popular retro video games of Japan. Mystery of Atlantis isn't terrible. It's quite popular in Japan along with a couple of other Famicom games by Sunsoft that were also featured on Game Center CX like The Wing of Madoola and Firework Thrower Kantaro's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō.

@thaKingRocka - Thanks for the report and you bring up an interesting parallel. Mystery of Atlantis was probably picked since it's designed terribly.

I wouldn't have expected Patrick Harlan to narrate it though!

i went this morning to the atlantis one. it was a pretty small audience, but that was really no surprise. i'd watched this show before with limited understanding, and enjoyed it. this episode's subbing had a few mistakes here and there, which really surprised me. confusing climactic and climatic is pretty hard for me to let slide. it was narrated by patrick harlan. unfortunately, i'm not much of a fan.

what i realized while watching it was that my reactions were more akin to the angry nintendo nerd's reactions, and i began wondering if there is some clause that requires the guy to refrain from properly trashing a game even when it is so absolutely incredibly terrible. the mystery of atlantis was probably one of the worst games ever made, and i mean that in all seriousness. it's one thing to ask for innovation in games, or even to ask a player to think outside the box, but this game takes the cake. it must have been made by evil jackasses who assumed their audience to be thoroughly masochistic in their entertainment preferences.

i guess the whole charm though is that someone can "achieve" in the face of insurmountable odds put in place by poor design and the worst in playablity. of course, the angry nintendo nerd serves up his own brand of charm as he gives crappy games the reactions they deserve. i don't want to put these two in any sort of competition, but as i was watching, i really felt that they were pretty much the same show with one reflecting my own ideas and reactions much more accurately.

I spent a small fortune on the Japanese sets, but I wouldn't mind buying them subbed in a language I can actually understand.
