Is Ogre Battle Due For A Comeback?

ogreb Before strategy RPGs were an established genre Quest developed Ogre Battle. In 2002 Quest was fully absorbed into Square shortly before Square became Square Enix. We haven’t seen any Ogre Battle / Tactics Ogre games since 2002 either. At that time Atlus was actively publishing the series. They even registered the trademark Tactics Ogre which has since expired.

Speaking of trademarks Square Enix recently registered Ogre Battle with the US Patent and Trademark database. Before anyone gets their hopes up that Square Enix is concocting an Ogre Battle revival it’s much more likely this trademark is an indicator that Square Enix will release the Super Nintendo Ogre Battle game on the Virtual Console. Enix gave Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen an extremely limited run and it’s considered one of the rarest Super Nintendo games. Let’s welcome a downloadable release of Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen for under $10 with open arms.

VC releases would make sense as Square’s shown no actual interest in reviving the brand post-Matsuno. I wish they’d just sell it off so Matsuno could finish the saga.

  • JeremyR

Yeah, it’s one of the greatest series in video games, it’s just not right that Square is sitting on it.

  • seiya19

    Yep, probably for the VC.

As for a successor of these games from Matsuno, there´s still that rumored project that he was supposedly working on… Maybe it has something to do with Ogre Battle, at least indirectly.

I would love to have a PSP or DS collection of Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, but I would settle for VC if it came to that. Anything Ogre Battle would be welcome in my books as it’s one of those series that truly never got its due because of its rarity with any version of it.

  • Hello Hello

It makes me sad that this Ogre Battle saga was never finished.

  • Rolando

Virtual Console release sounds more likely.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE OGRE BATTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RayFoxSith

As long as it’s a re-release or a VC game and not Square-Enix’s attempt to do a new game, I’m cool with that.

I wonder if we’ll get OB64 down the line too? Does Atlus own the script?
