Wait, A New Wii Is Being Shown On Thursday? imagesWe know Nintendo is having press conferences in Japan and San Francisco this Thursday. A new Nintendo DS with a camera might be there. According to What They Play and their “multiple sources” a new Wii will be one of the highlights. The rumored “Wii HD” will have better graphics, backwards compatibility, and fix the refrigerator problem by adding internal storage. Their sources say the next Wii won’t be launched until 2011 so the announcement, if it happens, is more like a tease.

No one needs to sneak into Nintendo’s headquarters to know they are working on a successor to the Wii. Announcing a crowning successor two years into the Wii’s lifecycle would be unexpected.

so, even nintendo starts with multiple versions of their console? as long as it doesn't reach PS3 proportions I don't really care though.

if it is true in the first place, ofcourse.

I dunno about a "Wii HD". I think they'll save any visual/res boost for the actual successor console.

A premium DVD playing Wii with more onboard flash (say 2-8GB) might be possible though? The new DS sounds like a premium model too, meaning we'll likely see the current Wii and DS Lite around still alongside them (a la GBASP & GB micro).

Sony called the successor to the Playstation the Playstation 2. Wii HD is a perfectly good name for the "actual successor console" to the Wii. And there's likely to be a PS4 and an Xbox 361 ;) by 2011, so anything Nintendo is planning to launch by then better be a successor and not just a few added features.

Would it be too much to hope for Blu-ray playback and a decent "media center" type interface?

Oh, missed the 2011 line... then yeah, this makes sense obviously.

It makes sense to a point. This would for sure be a successor. I would think given the system's popularity at this time though, it might be a bad idea to say anything now. I would at least think they would wait until after the holidays.
