Nintendo Making A Game With… Napoleon?

By Spencer . December 15, 2008 . 10:42am

image A rather unusual trademark was registered by Nintendo of Japan. On October 24th, 2008 the house of Mario registered the rights to use Napoleon for video games. We’ve seen Nintendo overzealously protect DSi-everything, but Napoleon? Is the big N’s next big game a tactics title with a deceased French military leader? Since EA making a game based on Dante’s Inferno anything is possible, but I wouldn’t bet on Napoleon Bonaparte starring in a Nintendo published game.

Napoleon is also the name of a Hearts-like card game in Japan. Between the possibilities of Super Napoleon Brothers and a WiiWare and/or DSiWare version of the card game I have to go with the latter. Still, it’s strange to see Nintendo spend money to register Napoleon. Maybe they think they have the next Solitaire for Japan or something?

I hope it’s a port/remake/sequel of the GBA strategy game. It seemed interesting…

Iwata must have taken a liking for Napoleon ^^’

GBA sequel/remake seems most likely, yeah. It was an RTS too, which would work well on DS. Genki made the original game for Nintendo btw.

    You can trademark historical figures?

Dibs on Hitler! Now all the democrats and republicans have to pay me royalties when they compare each other to him!

Nintendo made (and may still make) Hanafuda cards with Napoleon’s image on them for years. Perhaps they are making a new Hanafuda game for Wii/DS/DSi? See an example of them here:

  • This could have something to do with the Wii having been originally called “the Revolution”, or not.
