Atlus Want You To Name Their PSP High School Brawler

By Ishaan . July 7, 2009 . 1:00pm

Atlus is publishing Kenka Bancho 3, developed by Spike for the PSP in North America. The game is a street brawler that has you playing as a high school gang leader on a school trip. An Atlus survey explains:

“Bancho” is a Japanese term for someone who’s in charge because he’s the meanest, toughest, strongest dude around.

“Kenka” means “fighting,” making the entire title the equivalent of “Awesome Master of Badass Beating-Up-People Guys.” (You can see why we need your help here.) So, in short, the game is all about you proving yourself as the baddest hombre in town, accomplished by putting your fist as ungently as possible into the faces and guts of your opponents.

In other words, beat the crap out of as many people as you can. Kenka Bancho 3 allows you to customize your character by picking from a variety of faces, hairstyles and clothes. The game also features a 2-player co-op mode and dating events with girls. Atlus need your help picking a finalist from list of tentative titles. Personally, I like “Badass Rumble” and “Fist of the Bancho.” Whatever the final name is we’ll see Kenka Bancho 3 in stores early next year.

And no, I have no idea what the hell is going on in that screen either. It seems like the protagonist is…intimidating someone with his powerful gaze? But in the screenshots below, he clearly seems to be administering some sort of hell chop and chidori…

< Spencer’s Note: Wow! I’m shocked Atlus picked up Kenka Bancho 3. We covered it before and Atlus published some of Spike’s other works like Samurai Western, but it’s one of the last games I thought would get localized. Very bold move, Atlus. Go Fist of the Bancho!>

  • ReturnOfSomeDude

I’m guessing they probably won’t name it after the classic HK movie series, “Fight Back to School”. :)

  • “The survey is already taken”

but anyone who signed up with Atlus will get the survey.

    Here’s the choices:
    Kenka Bancho
    Badass Rumble
    Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble
    Turf Wars
    Kenka Bancho: Turf War
    Bancho Royale
    Fist of the Bancho
    Rise of the Bancho

I kinda like Fist of the Bancho myself and voted for it.

    • Ereek

I picked “Kenka Bancho: Turf War,” though I, too, liked Fist of the Bancho.

  • Nabe

I went for Turf War, but now i’m warming up to Badass Rumble…

  • I ended up voting for Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble.

  • Hraesvelgr

And I want Atlus to start releasing better games.

………voted for Kenka Bancho on its own, by the way. I was pretty partial to “Fist of the Bancho” though, as it amused me…. assuming they were making a reference with that.

Awesome Master of Badass Beating-Up-People Guys
This name is great for the game.
    I mean come on, after:
Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, What Did I do to deserve this ?
    this name is great

  • D-oh! I just voted and I already forgot what I choose, but I believe it was Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble. I felt it conveyed the tone of the game.

  • shion16

“Im more badass than whos reading this”

  • River City Bancho: Return of Slick

  • superdry

I chose Badass Rumble. But, honestly, as my friend put it best…the name of the game is “Somebody Got Their Ass Beat: Part 3.”

  • Kopp

Plain and simple. I’d cream myself if I was able to hold a box with a square-jawed bancho on the front that read only: Badass.

  • Code

Awesome, I approve this! I went for “Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble” it still keeps the original name which is important to me, but I’ve never been able to resist something labeled badass too +o+! Although I did like Bancho Royale too, reminds me of Battle Royale >w<!!

    • Our wave-thoughts must have intercepted at some point ’cause I was thinking the same thing on all that :3

  • Chow

This is totally sweet! I remember seeing the other games on the PS2, but never really expected that the series would ever get localized.

“Not Even Remotely A Kunio Game”

Oh, and the eye beams are from the second game (or possibly the first, but there’s more info out there on the second). You start it up with a trigger and aim it at another hoodlum. When you make eye contact, it starts a little button-press minigame, and winning it will usually give you a first-strike advantage or something (I think it can even cause weak enemies to flee the area).

    • dark_god

Looks cool. I name it Fight Day.

  • Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble was going to be my second choice but I”m glad other people are voting for me on that one. :)

    • It’s cool that they let the fans choose the title, so I’ll be fine with whatever is chosen. I can’t recall too many times that an opportunity like this has happened.

It would be funny if there was a three-way tie and they’ll just roll it all together like those Street Fighter II games.

      • I think the last time something like this happened was Hudson for the naming of “Help Wanted”.

  • thaKingRocka

i voted for “kenka bancho.” despite what the kids say, they really don’t mind learning. just put that explanation on the box and put an awesome picture of someone being badass. uninformed consumers will then be informed.

  • Aoshi00

Japanese delinquents in their custom made school uniforms w/ retro slick hairdos and wooden swords are the most “badass”, so I guess any title w/ that word in it is fitting.

I used to like Yusuke or Kuwabara so much in Yu Yu Hakusho (Yusuke smoking in the manga was changed to chewing gum in the anime), or the Sakuragi gang in Slam Dunk, or just the whole Shohoku basketball team in general. Totally badass.

Wonder if biker gangs still look like this in Japan, it’s so 80’s or 90’s now :)

  • Heiae

I chose the Badass Rumble one. Because the game is totally badass.

  • Strike_Man

In a twisted sort of way, I would have little problem with “Awesome Master of Badass Beating-Up-People Guys” over any of the “real” choices. Lewis Canon would be proud of it.
