Nobuo Uematsu Returns To Score Final Fantasy XIV and Other Square Projects

Interest +10! In a feature on Nobuo Uematsu, Wired mentions that the veteran RPG composer is returning is returning to compose Final Fantasy XIV, as well as two more unannounced Square Enix projects (FF Gaiden please!) to be announced this year.

Uematsu took a break from Final Fantasy and Square in 2004. The latest Uematsu tracks you’ve heard in the past year or two are probably from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (the theme to the game).

Edit: Thanks to reader Helves for pointing out that the FFXIII trailer music, is infact, composed by Masashi Hamauzu.

Nobuo Uematsu announced his work on FF XIV at the Distant Worlds concert in Seattle a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately did not give out hints on any other Squeenix titles. I asked him personally if he would be working on any future Mistwalker projects and what are they?. He replied with “secret ;)” I hate those kind of answers though it probably means yes

The music of the Final Fantasy XIII trailers is not by Uematsu, is by Hamauzu like the rest of the soundtrack. Probably Uematsu will be the voiced theme song composer like in XI and XII but we still have to see…

Anyways, I'm really interested in Uematsu's return, Final Fantasy hasn't been the same without him (not bad either!) and the unannounced projects…FFGaiden is already announced right? Ah! and don't forget Uematsu's work in the “Lord of Vermillion” Soundtrack, it was pretty good!

Too bad it's for 14 since I really don't care about MMO..

I was totally looking forward to his score for “Cry On” before the project got scrapped. Love the soundtracks for Lost Odyssey and Anata wo Yurusanai (bought both of them). Uematsu's still got it.

Just verified, and you're right — it is Hamauzu. Fixed. Thanks for the heads up!

Eh, I'm not terribly fond of Uematsu, personally. I mean, he's pretty good, but I get the feeling he wouldn't be as popular as he is if it wasn't for the fact that he worked on the Final Fantasy series for so long. In my opinion, there are a number of VG music composers that are better.

  • Enact

Since I've been following XIV since it's annoucement, I gotta say that this isn't really new news, since it was mentioned back at E3 and when the teaser site opened…

  • QBasic

Hm. Was gonna point out the same thing.

    Enact's right, man. =/

As a musician and amateur composer, it's very easy for me to be impressed and infatuated with the work he does. He has a very versatile style (Swing, piano rag, Spanish flamenco, opera–I don't know if there's anything this guy CAN'T do) and his melodies are very easy to commit to memory. In my opinion, Nobuo's helped immensely to give Final Fantasy the image it's upheld over the years because of his themes.

I can understand how you feel though. VGM's filled with an amazing variety of different styles, and I've definitely met more than enough people who don't think Nobuo's their cup of tea.

His involvement in FFIV was announced already, but I, for one, wasn't aware he was going to work on two other S-E projects, and I follow these sites like a damn religion.

Oh, jesus… That's FFXIV…………………. it just hit me how crazy that is.

  • manoclay

I definitely agree because I'm not a the type who praises everything he worked on (not saying there are many out there that do). His highs are pretty damn good, such as the whole FFVI OST and his contributions to Chrono Trigger. I'd rather not expand on listing others but they came to mind, and can also safely say that the majority of his works are forgettable.

Which OST do you think is his best? I'm torn between FFVI and VII. Here's a fun tidbit: I played FFVII after watching Advent Children — despite being less than impressed by the graphics, the soundtrack made me keep playing.

God, that battle theme is still one of the best ever.

  • manoclay

That's such a tough question. As much as I love Terra's theme, the overworld theme in FFVII is also one of my favorites because it drags on in such a great way. I haven't played FFVII thoroughly since the game was released over a decade ago, though. I still give the edge to FFVI and imagining the game remade with FFVII's quality (graphics, music, etc) would seriously make it my favorite. You're right about VII's battle theme, though. Shucks, I could go on but I'd have to re-listen to the OSTs first.
