SEGA Teases Project Needlemouse: New 2D Sonic for 2010

By Ishaan . September 9, 2009 . 10:13am

You didn’t really think SEGA would let 9/9/09 go by without a big nostalgic announcement, did you? Here’s a teaser trailer for “Project Needlemouse,” a new 2D Sonic game. While a developer hasn’t been confirmed, it could very well be the Prope project Yuji Naka teased at TGS last year.

SEGA’s associate brand manager revealed to Gamespot that Project Needlemouse is being developed in high-def, but before any Wii-only owners pop their corks; remember, most 2D games are drawn in high resolution and scaled down as required.

      You and me both Marc. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sega wakes up this time.

    So HAPPY!

  • Happy 10th, Dreamcast. =*) I remember carrying you home…

    • Ereek

      Indeed, Happy Birthday Dreamcast! I think I’ll spend some time today playing my Dreamcast out of respect and love.

      I’m too wary of Sonic Team to get excited about this new game yet, though.

        Happy 10th Dreamcast.

          Can’t believe it’s 10 years to the day. Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online using a modem, so many good memories. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I hooked it up to my big TV, better than the arcades.

  • Well I’m happy, we need more 2D Sonic games instead of just handheld.

    I won’t nostalgia get the best of me though, even the most jaded of fans should be grateful and not whine everytime something new is known about the game.

    Also, Needlemouse. :3 Got to love obscure classic references, that was one of Sonic’s early names iirc

      Actually, the Japanese word for hedgehog is literally translated as “needle mouse”

      Harinezumi = hedgehog
      Hari = needle
      Nezumi = mouse

      • I know, but instead of calling it hedgehog it just makes it more like they looked at early concept art for that name or something.

    QBasic:Ever play Sonic Rush or Sonic Rush Adventure for the DS? Those games were smooth, polished and retained that “classic” sonic gameplay.

    Fantastic, I liked most of Sonic Unleashed so a full on 2D game would be fantastic. Even better that they took some speculation out of this by stating its being developed for HD consoles, I was going to be quite angry if Sega pulled a Muramasa on me. Wii only owners will hopefully get their version too, but at least I know I can have this the way I would want it.

    • Aoshi00

      Cool trailer. I thought Unleashed was quite a good game too, even the werehog action platforming despite some frustrating camera angles as usual.

      Waiting for Muramasa HD too, 6 months, a year, bring it on.

      • thebanditking

        I wonder, if the game is 2D will it be a network release? Seems like it, though while I never ignore a game because of how its distributed I do wonder what will happen down the line when I dont physically own these games and they are no longer obtainable. Money well wasted?

        • Aoshi00

          I never thought of that.. If it’s digital over PSN, they better price it cheaper. For a game this epic, it really deserves to be on a disc for collection. I actually didn’t get Patapon 2 because of that reason, my attachment to something tangible..

  • I think this webcomic sums up what’s going on here,

    I don’t want another roller coaster sonic, I want some fast action platforming like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, not another Sonic Rush-Through-Level type game.

    • Aoshi00

      lol, hilarious comic strip. Haven’t played Dark Knight yet, I thought Ring was okay, and Unleashed (360 version) was awesome, I could play the day stages all day. So if they use the good parts from Unleashed, a good Sonic game really “shouldn’t” be that hard, just get rid of the gimmicks.

  • Mazen

    Wow Can’t wait! Unleashed day levels were the best Sonic levels ever even though they could have improved the music even more.

    • daizyujin

      Agreed the daytime levels were great but honestly, I liked the music in Unleashed. It sounded more like classic sonic tunes than other more recent games. It started to feel like I should be tripping on X at a club than playing a Sonic game.

  • daizyujin

    Well it isn’t like it is a tall chore to get this right. All they have to do is make a game full of levels just like the daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed kept in a 2D perspective and bam, you have great game.

  • Chow

    It should be noted that the silhouette you can see in that thumbnail preview is in fact the original Sonic 1 “Press Start” logo… just silhouetted and blurred. You can see the top spike, and the tip of his finger sticking out there.

    I hope that’s a good indication that it’s gonna be a sprite-based game.

    • Icon

      Yeah, you’re right. It’s just like the images of the rings and their sound effects; it’s all suggesting a (hopefully) glorious return to the past.

  • hopefully itll be multiplat

  • rebirfh

    You’re right here’s a comparision between them
