No one focuses on this, but I am always so happy to hear nintendo talk about how they are not interested in Monthly fees. I hate monthly fees and at this point do not sign up for any new ones ever even if its a product/service I want. I do have a cell phone plan and a monthly internet bill, but thats about it.

yeah I agree. portable games do cost less, but if the console-portable line were to merge as some rumors hint at, then this would no longer be the case. :(

For me a portable is a better deal. Even if it costs more than a home console you don't need to pay hidden costs for a TV, comfortable chair/sofa and a large enough room. Plus the games cost less.

No. They will always have to be cheaper to succeed. Unless all consoles eventually become portable, but that's a ways off yet.

The price of handhelds seems to be on an upward curve thanks to the prevalence of mobile phones, PDAs, subnotebooks, MP3 players, and devices combining existing functionality, including the DSi which has a camera, internet browser and more in addition to DS features like microphone and touch screen. The technology has proceeded to the point where these features are valuable in a portable instead of add-on oddities like the GameBoy camera & printer. As the value of portability rises, that affects portable consoles as well.
