Cross†Channel Coming To PSP

"What is Cross†Channel," you ask? It’s a visual novel I intended to playtest for the site months ago, but had to stop because of how disturbing it could be at times. While there are no actual NSFW scenes for the first few hours in the game, the protagonist, Taichi Kurosu’s mind is so very deep in the gutter, it gets a little unsettling. Still, it’s an interesting game — the writing and fan translation are both excellent, if a bit heavy-handed at times — and I intend to play more of it one of these days, and eventually write up that playtest. Here’s a plot summary if you’re curious.

The game was ported to the PS2 at one point as Cross†Channel ~to all people~ (presumably with all the h-scenes removed). Anyone that’s interested in checking out the portable, non-ecchi version should keep their eyes on the PSP for Feb 25, 2010. The limited edition also includes a drama CD and special booklet in addition to the game.

Something that caught my attention about Cross†Channel was that it is apparently one of Kinoko Nasu’s (Type Moon) favourite games. I’d be lying if I said reading about that didn’t influence my decision to get back into it after it nearly drove me away the first time.

Didn't they make an All-Ages fan translation too? ...I thought I read something about that at their forum..
  • Yes, it seems like it's part of the regular patch.

    From the readme file:
The installer also features an "All Ages" option during installation. This is for those who would like to read the game without the ero scenes. In their place are a few bits of filler text and a black screen.

Oh sweet a fan translation, thanks for bringing that to my attention :D

Gotta finish F/SN though first... my backlog is so huge *sigh*
  • It's also interesting to note that this is what the popular flash game Nanaca Crash was based on.

I played through the fan translation a while ago and really enjoyed it. You should finish it Ishaan, the ending is worth it!
  • Oh, I plan to. It was starting to get interesting when I dropped it, too. I couldn't help it; it weirded me out so much in those first few hours. Damn Taichi.
  • ZeroBlitz
There are very good explanations behind Taichi's personality and it's pretty much essential to the plot in the long run. I urge you to attempt to continue it again soon as it really is among the best English released Visual Novels available.

Also, the translation team that released the English patch have just finished translating Sekien no Inganock (full patch should be released within a week) and have their next-project poll up right now.
  • Will do. Thanks for all the encouragement. I felt really bad about dropping the game. I always figured there would be a good reason for Taichi being the way he was, but I guess I needed some breathing room before jumping back in. I'll see about getting back into it next week!

Cross Channel was too disturbing? wut?

You must have been one of those kids who was absolutely terrified by the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar.

    Yes!
    [Japan]
    Haha... ah, well..

I might still check it out. The other day, while browsing through my old Photobucket account, there a couple pictures I saved from C†C back from... 2006 - and no, they weren't any of the nasty parts, either (PB deletes those)! I didn't know this originally had h-scenes till Ishaan mentioned it here.

    is coming... to japan right?
  • Divals
So... maybe I'm just dumb... but how do I use that fan-translation? It seems to just be patches. Do I have to import the original game to use it?
  • Yeah. You'll need Cross Channel already installed on your computer before you can apply the patch. You can achieve that by importing the game, or, y'know, finding it through other means.
  • Oh, hey, okay. I didn't even know there was a fan translation; thanks for pointing that out.

The visual novel fan-translation 'scene' (or whatever) is really picking up at the moment. Excluding CC and SnI some stand-out titles include: Sharin no Kuni, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Ever17, Chaos;Head, Aoi Shiro, Saya no Uta, Utawarerumono, Sengoku Rance, Tears to Tiara plus the obvious ones (Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Clannad and Kanon). There are also some high-profile titles with translation patches covering over half the game such as Remember11, G-Senjou no Maou and Little Busters.

  • That's great, thanks. I was aware of a few of those, but I'd always catch word of these things second-hand. I wasn't sure whether or not there was a centralized place to hear about fan translation updates besides being part of the community, which I don't really have time for. So thanks for posting this.
