Shin Megami Tensei For PS3, Says Amazon Japan

Heads up! As reported by Japanese blog My Game News Flash, Amazon.jp has a listing for Shin Megami Tensei (working title) for Playstation 3.

A few months ago, we came across a listing for Shoji Meguro as producer on Persona 5. While the release of a Persona 5 at some point is almost certain, this Amazon listing probably refers to a different game, since, in Japan, the Persona games don’t use the Shin Megami Tensei moniker.

Could the listing perhaps mean that the game is closer to release than we suspect? After all, the Persona team only just started gearing up for their next big project, so I wouldn’t expect Persona 5 until next year. Shin Megami Tensei could be Atlus’ big game for 2010.

That would be glorious. Time to get a PS3 I guess.

  • Dark_Sage

Fabulous news. Definitely gonna preorder this when I get a chance.

  • MisterNiwa

Shin Megami Tensei exclusive title for PS3… >:I

    Better stays this way.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Kamiwoo Kamiwoo

I don’t see how making it multiplatform would be bad for anybody, as long as it’s done properly.

      • MisterNiwa

Im a fanboy, isnt it obvious that i want the 360 to rot in hell? :I
        Cant wait for ME2 though.

      • Slashlen

You realize you’re talking to someone who’s using Bayonetta for their pic, right? :)

        • http://photovoltaik.bandcamp.com/ Ujn Hunter

Wait… you have a Bayonetta avatar, yet you are a PS3 fanboy? WHAT?!

          • MisterNiwa

Whats wrong about loving Bayonetta and playing it on the PS3? >:I

  • malek86

    Oh, this again.

“After all, the Persona team only just started gearing up for their next big project, so I wouldn’t expect Persona 5 until next year. Shin Megami Tensei could be Atlus’ big game for 2010.”

Made by… whom? The Persona 3 and Persona 4 team is the same team that made Shin Megami Tensei 3; Strange Journey was made by the team that did Kuzunoha Raidou 2. If a “big game” is coming out in 2010 and the Persona team is just gearing up for their next project and the other team just released its most recent game, who is making it?

    Yyyyyyyyyes!

  • csmzs

well, i guess this news will make the hd graphic whores really really really happy. they have been calling (or crying or bitching) for an hd shin megami tensei videogame for a really long time.

you people better enjoy atlus now, because they probably won’t be around much longer once this game is released in japan. i don’t think atlus can afford hd development. an this playstation 3 game won’t sell well enough for them to earn their money back. shin megami tensei is no dragon quest or final fantasy when it comes to sales.

goodbye atlus! you single print run bastard!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Kamiwoo Kamiwoo

Seriously, what are you even talking about?

      • csmzs

i’m talking about hd development and low atlus game sales.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/Kamiwoo Kamiwoo

But you just said a bunch of speculative stuff without any solid proof, even going so far as to say Atlus won’t be around? I mean, come on. Every company is making the transition to HD and “next gen” and Atlus won’t be any exception. And us obsessed fans will continue to buy up all their great games. It’ll be okay, don’t worry.

I mean, they can’t just continue to develop PS2 games forever. Although that would be oddly awesome.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Atlus are one of the most business-savvy game publishers in Japan, and one of the few that are actually expanding. I highly doubt they would jump into high-def development if they couldn’t afford to.

      • endaround

Really Atlus has more to worry about with Disney buying Marvel and losing its Japanese distribution rights then screwing up a what has been a slow move to HD graphics.

    • Joanna

they don’t have to go HD. They *could* take the NIS route (PS3 game that is not HD). Of course all those graphic whores would probably rip their eyes out if Atlus did that. I don’t care either way, if the game is solid it can be HD or not.

  • http://otoboku.se manga

Sounds nice. Can´t wait for it to be released.

  • Xeahnort

    Please, be true (x2)

    Fap, fap, fap….

  • memoryofwater

csmzs has a point. Atlus will either be working with a budget that undercuts most fans’ expectations for a current gen SMT or committing Shenmue Suicide with this one.

To be honest, I’m surprised. I thought the series would hang out on the DS for a little while longer or start gravitating toward the Wii. Though the latter has its own issues for third parties, it’d keep Atlus closer to their comfort zone, financially and technologically. I’m not sure what to expect with this. It’d certainly be interesting to see what Atlus could cook up on hardware like that, with an actual budget, but… This is Atlus we’re talking about.

What the hell Atlus!!!! No Xbox 360 Shin Megami Tensei love.

    • BlackFreefall

I remembered Atlus was making Shin Megami Tensei Nine for the original Xbox. I don’t know if Atlus released it Japan, but they canceled it here in the US.

    • cpt_Tabor

Shin Megami Tensei: NINE was a god awful flop on the original XBOX in japan; why would they risk that again?

    • endaround

There may not be an initial Japanese 360 release but really hard to not see it not getting a full port given the 360′s place in the US.

      • Slashlen

I wonder if they’re waiting a little bit to see how the next few months go. We have a couple large JRPGs coming out for both systems at the same time. I can’t think of any time this gen that this has happened. It will probably be the best indication we will have of how the JRPG crowd is split between the two sides.

    • supermarius

they released that zoids game on the xbox, and Spectral forces 3, and that game where you used werewolves to fight nazis. I don’t see why they wouldnt release a persona game on the xbox as well. It will certainly do better than the other games they have pushed on the console.

Now that isnt to say that it will be multiplatform, but theres no reason to presume it wont be. However, if I were sony i would probably try to see how much i could pay atlus to make this an artificial exclusive. This could be a real system seller for rpg geeks who have been just playing ps2, waiting for genuinely good next gen rpgs.

    ^everybody’s reaction to this news.

  • Nabe

Just when i’ve been losing interest in the series Atlus (or in this case Amazon) does this. I will be looking ever more closely at the next few issues of Famitsu…

  • kupomogli

SMT FOUUUUUUUUUUUUR. Hopefully it’s as good as SMT Nocturne(or atleast close.)

    • Kris

      Isn’t Strange Journey technically SMT4?

      • BarnabyJones4evar

I could see Strange Journey being kind of a test/primer to get the SMT name out there again and generate buzz for the franchise before they send out a next-gen ‘proper’ SMT sequel.

        • Jaxx-Leviathan

The only reason you’d not recognize Strange Journey as the proper sequel is because it’s on a handheld.

          • MadMirko

Or because it’s not set in Tokyo. There are probably even more nonsensical reasons, though.

  • cj_iwakura

Final Fantasy XIII better enjoy success while it lasts. The big dog’s coming back for seconds.
    (By that I mean Cerberus)

  • Slashlen

    Hell Yes!

But PS3 only? Why not the Wii? :P

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

Would love for the Wii to get some SMT, but since HD is all the rage and Wii doesn’t support that.. I think you have your answer.

  • http://twitter.com/ravenschwann Tim Nguyen

I hope more info on this starts rolling out!

  • Hraesvelgr

Amazon seems to leak things early like this, unintentionally or not. I’m not sure how accurate the non-US Amazon sites are in this regard, but it wouldn’t surprise me…

That said, I hope it’s real. Would prefer multiplatform, but if not, I’ll just have to do some PS3 borrowing.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Well, if this turns out to be true then that is the last drop that makes me buying a PS3 definate.

  • Nekobo

I love how the mention of SMT or Persona in an article almost always causes an explosion of colorful comments.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I know, right? We’re just going to pretend every post we make from now on is related to Megaten or Persona.

      • MisterNiwa

Did someone say Megaten or Persona!? *lurking*

        • Kris

I like Megaten and Persona! I should make a comment on this!

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Quick! I believe that Last Story patent is to do with the next Megami Tensei game!

  • thebanditking

JRPG’s work out better if the team can focus on just one platform. This would be the first title in the series in HD and I would much rather seem them take advantage of the larger capacity Blu-ray. FFXIII’s multiplatform development had an effect on the final porduct (Im no fanboy but at this point I think we all realize that). For the next SMT I would rather have the team make the game the best it can be then worry about what will run on both and keep the number of discs down.

    • malek86

Considering the average SMT production values, I’d be surprised if they filled a DVD.

      • Hraesvelgr

Plus a multiplatform SMT game would be much different than a multiplatform FF.
