Persona 3 Portable Evokes July Release In North America

By Ishaan . January 20, 2010 . 11:00am

All right guys, keep your underwear on now. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable is coming July 6, 2010. A– Hey! Put that back in, damn it! This is a public forum!

Persona 3 Portable incorporates a number of enhancements from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. You can get a part time job, directly control your teammates, and use skill cards to customize personae. Beat Persona 3? This version has five difficulty levels and a female protagonist with a divergent storyline. Her journey has bits of fanservice that connect Persona 3 to Persona 4.

No pre-order bonuses or anything announced yet, but then July is a ways off. Oh, and PSPgo owners needn’t fret; the announcement says the PSN version will release in July as well.

In the meantime, have some unlocalized screenshots and check out the official site. Just…keep it clean.

  • Been waiting for this post! :)

So excited for this! Not even totally sure why, but any excuse I can get to play/explore the world of Persona 3 again is a good enough reason for me!

Now till kill the time till July by playing Persona 4 for the 3rd time…!

“Now till kill the time till July by playing Persona 4 for the 3rd time…!”

At least you only had to BUY P4 one time ;)

My willpower is weak, so I’ll actually be purchasing P3 for the third time when this version releases. I’m sure I’m not the only one who will triple-dip with original P3, Fes, and Portable…

      • Oh, I’m with you. Bought Persona 3 when it first released, then FES, and not on to P3P. For any other game I think I’d actively be upset about releasing it so many times in such a short span, but just isn’t the case for me with the Persona games. I love them enough that I don’t mind supporting the franchise over and over and in a way helping to ensure that there will always be a P5 and a P6 someday. Also, I just really enjoy the story and characters in these games, so I have no problem revisiting them on around an annual basis.

      • malek86

This would be only my second time getting P3. I bought the first edition, but stopped playing after a while because I didn’t like not having control of all my characters. So I didn’t bother with FES.

        • And I’m the rare person that loved not having control of my whole team. I played P4 with my teammates doing their own thing as well. Wish more games had this. Makes your party members feel more real by not having exacting control over their motions.

I rare ever had a problem with the AI.

          • malek86

Eh, I don’t like it when things don’t go my way. I remember when playing Devil Summoner, I always had my demons on “don’t do jack until I tell you to”. Now that I think about it though, I was the one doing most of the work… oh well.

          • Marin Karin.

          • Hraesvelgr

That feeling of realness is ruined by the fact that the AI is rather poor. Despite the fact that Yukari has the spells to be main healer, you, as the MC, were more or less pigeonholed into playing that role because she didn’t know how to party heal properly. Also, the AI has a habit of using buffs/debuffs needlessly (they are admittedly not that useful in P3), Mitsuru with Marin Karin/Mind Charge, waiting their turns instead of attempting to do something, etc.

Party control is a very welcome addition in my opinion. I will say that I didn’t think the AI was as bad as most people say it is, but the difference is very noticeable.

          • It’s been over a year since the last time I played, but I have played 3 twice now and I truly don’t ever remember being too upset with the AI. Only thing I can remember was there were times when the party members should have done a knockdown and didn’t. That’s about it. Never used Mitsuru (not a fan of hers) so I’m not aware of her particular problem, but I often feel people make the AI sound significantly worse than it ever was.

  • zhemos

Like we didn’t see it coming. :P Still thank you Atlus you deliver once again. 2010 rocks!

  • nyoron

I haven’t been this surprised at a localization since Koei announced they were bringing over the newest Dynasty Warriors game :O

    Will probably play this.

    • Hraesvelgr

I really can’t see why you’re surprised about this. And if you’re going to be surprised about Koei localizations, be surprised about them releasing new Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Nobunaga’s Ambition titles. Dynasty Warriors and its spinoffs are their cash cow titles and not at all surprising.

      • nyoron

I was hoping the :O would suffice but maybe I should have put “/sarcasm” instead, I’ll try harder next time.

        • Hraesvelgr

…my bad. Since some people are seriously surprised about it being announced, I just kinda figured.

  • malek86

    Great info. I’ll probably buy.

  • Xeahnort

Europe still waiting the remake of the first Persona.

  • Kris

I’m actually not too thrilled for this, I still haven’t beaten my copy of FES, and I just can’t bring myself to buy P3 again.
Then again, I said the same about my PSP GoTY 2009, Disgaea 2. :P

  • Anyone want to guess who voices the female lead for this version?

    • n b4 laura baileeeeeeeeeeeey

      • yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

      • But I wouldn’t be surprised if that isn’t the case else I wouldn’t have asked for guesses. Part of me expects someone new for this role.

        • Question is, who would do ‘teen girl’ better than her? :/

    • Hraesvelgr

So long as it isn’t freaking Wendee Lee. She isn’t a bad VA, but why in the world must they make her do teen/younger voices?

      • Because she’s done everything else already.

  • 311

Sweet but man getting the game for a 5th play around?! (P3, FES, both Jpn/eng Versions) Hmm gotta prepare myself mentally for this one

  • Ereek

Oh goodie, the third release of the same game in three years.

Forgive me if I sound Jaded, but this is milking money to its finest.

    • Are we in agreement that it’s at least something worthwhile?

    • ndjn3979

I agree wholeheartedly, but at least it’s on a different platform with somewhat worthwhile content. I would have bought it on PS2, but PSP? It’s not going to feel the same. And I’m guessing P3 fans buy more because they miss that kind of…intimacy (?).

    • Hraesvelgr

I agree. And it’s kind of funny that most people are accepting of it, because P3 has so many fanboys, despite complaining about other companies milking games (I’m looking at you, Namco).

      • There’s something to be said about the Persona fanboys in that you don’t see many of them in proportion to the size of the fanbase as a whole.

  • I like the video, but I would have preferred female vocals… But then again, I didn’t really like the Persona 4 intro song when I first heard it.

Still a day 1 purchase, though! Gimme a bonus OST, Atlus!

  • csmzs

the game doesn’t look very good. why not just reprint the playstation 2 version of persona 3 (not fes) and sell it for $20 or $30 dollars?

    • Because the PS2 version of Persona 3 doesn’t have the all new storyline with a female protagonist.

  • Hurray! I don’t think I can wait until July!!!

  • cj_iwakura

    Day one.

  • malek86

By the way, to anyone here who played the jp version, how are the loading times and noise? Because, while I’m not realistically expecting another Hexyz Force, I’m also afraid they might be long. I’d like to buy the physical version, of course, but I’m tempted because the PSN version would give me some nice bonuses such as:1) no noise2) less loading times3) no being screwed by those damn customsBut if you tell me that the jap version is relatively silent and has short enough load times, I’ll probably give in.

    • Hraesvelgr

Use headphones and you will never hear any noise aside from game sounds. Couldn’t say about the load times, since I never bothered to pay attention to this game.

  • Guest

Not enough reasons to buy this. Added difficulty adds nothing dont want to play as a female in a Persona.

    I got FES Im good.

  • Slashlen

Day 1 purchase. And I will be triple-dipping.

Also looking forward to party control. Stupei seemed to love casting buffs when fighting easy shadows for some reason.

  • Vanilla

RIGHT when I start thinking, “We not getting this”–lo and behold. I am SO PUMPED. I don’t care that I’ve played this game twice, I want this so badly.

    • Hraesvelgr

Honestly, why would anyone think they wouldn’t be releasing it? It’s barely been out for two months in Japan, even. Certainly a far cry from the people who were waiting for them to localize Persona 2: Innocent Sin up until the fan translation was done. Them releasing this was pretty much expected.

      • Vanilla

Gee, sorry. It wasn’t really a matter of time to me. They HAVE released P3 twice here already. I don’t have much experience with the way Persona is released in the states, so I pretty much figured I shouldn’t hold my breath. I had more faith in P3P coming here than, say, most Tales games, but I wasn’t going to get my hopes up.

        • Hraesvelgr

Well, Persona is currently their… second most popular game in North America, I think, so I would say to just assume anything with “Persona” in the title will be released.

  • holyPaladin

After P3 and P3FES, I will play this again.. =x

  • Definitely getting this! I could borrow the disc from my cousin, but I like playing under the covers =)

  • OMG i didnt expect this! *sarcasm*

  • Oh look there’s that Santa outfit again.

  • Hraesvelgr

God dammit, I hate you, Atlus.

    …well, maybe I’ll buy it.

  • nonoko

Looks like I’m picking up a PSP soon.

  • YAY!! now just LA3 left…

  • raymk

yeah i’m getting this day 1 yo :)

  • ShinNoKami

8D Brb, dancing in my underwear.

  • So, third game and thanks to all the extras I´m jolly with joy over finally getting a set date for it to be released.

Then I think back. It took me quite some time to finish the first P3. And do I have the endurance to play that amount of time on a PSP? I honestly don´t know and I don´t want this title to just lie in it´s package.

When I have decided what to do, then I can be either a happy puppy or a sad puppy since I might not be playing with the female version.

  • Devonian

Hey, at least they’re willing to repeatedly release the improved versions of their games. If only a certain other company would be that kind…

  • trackssnow

I cannot wait for this release whatever the bonuses are that may come with a pre-order of Persona 3 Portable it’s just icing on the cake!
