First Impressions: Durarara!!

By Ishaan . March 20, 2010 . 7:56am

First Impressions: Durarara!! Every season, I pour over the preview summaries for upcoming anime shows with a bunch of friends, and every season, we find at least 3 series we think might be worth following. Inevitably, they keep watching, while I drop off after the first few episodes because I tend to be busy, and also very picky (somehow, they aren’t as jaded as I am). The last show I can say I genuinely took pleasure in watching was Bakemonogatari.

Here’s my problem with present-day anime: a lot of it is based around recycled concepts that we’re all too familiar with. And while I have absolutely zero issues with a well-made show that refines elements of stuff from the ’90s, there’s almost always something lacking, whether it’s the music or the enthusiastic "spirit" that made anime from the mid-90s so much fun to watch. I enjoyed Bakemonogatari because it came out of left field and was like nothing I’d ever seen before. The direction, the dialogue, art style and character interactions all felt very fresh and new, so whatever shortcomings the show had were quickly overlooked.

One of the new shows from last season, Durarara!! (based on a light novel by the author of Baccano!), however, is of the former approach. It’s a refinement of the "spirit" of anime, but at the same time, it also feels very new. If I were to describe it to in a few lines, I’d say it feels like someone hired Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei team to work on an anime series. If that sounds interesting in the least, do keep reading.

First Impressions: Durarara!!

Following the ongoing trend of games and anime situated in popular commercial districts, Durarara!! takes place in Ikebukuro, and is an extremely character-driven show. The first episode kicks off with a rather meek boy by the name of Ryugamine Mikado arriving at Ikebukuro station to do his schooling from there. Mikado is greeted by an old childhood friend: Kida Masaomi, a self-proclaimed "Ikebukuronese," who intends to introduce his pal to the wonders of the district, including — but not limited to — women, women and…women.

The interaction between Mikado and Kida is one of the many highlights of the show. There’s a great emphasis on characterization, and these two are handled exceptionally well. Mikado, while meek, is actually quite steadfast and down to earth in his beliefs. Kida, a playboy-in-training by appearance, is secretly very mature and protective of his friend. He’s seen a side to Ikebukuro that most would keep away from, and the subtle cues hinting at this make you curiouser about his experiences as the show goes on. The two together are like an innocent-yet-street-smart comedy duo that make for some very interesting moments.

Then there’s the "Dollars," a mysterious street gang whose purpose and origin is unknown. All you know about them is that they aren’t to be messed with and are capable of taking on the local yakuza, amongst other feats of unbelievable strength and influence. And yet, just like Kida, there’s far more to the Dollars than meets the eye. Who formed them? Why do they exist? On what basis do they induct members?

First Impressions: Durarara!!

The same can be said for highschool dropout Seiji and his seemingly mute girlfriend, who has a large scar across her neck; Orihara Izaya, a smart-talking troublemaker that makes it his hobby to test the will of (read: "help") suicidals; and Heiwajima Shizuo, a quick-tempered but comical bartender that’s capable of ripping entire mailboxes out of the pavement and flinging them across the block. Ikebukuro is an absolutely fascinating locale, home to a wide variety of very unique people, and every single character in the show has a story begging to be discovered. And naturally, Durarara!! is in no hurry to provide you with all the answers.

For, you see, not only is every character interesting and relatable as an individual, they’re also all connected to each other, but you’re not quite sure how. This is where it gets good.

Beyond being the noisy, bustling, sometimes dangerous commercial centre that it is, Ikebukuro is also home to the urban legend of "the headless rider," as people like to call the mysterious headless ghost with a giant scythe and a neighing motorcycle that tears down the streets, hunting down criminals and performing various under-the-table jobs for reasons and people unknown. This headless rider is somehow the connecting link between the characters. A large majority of our mysterious cast seems to know the headless rider personally, and often offer their assistance any way they can, but the hows and whys are shrouded in mystery.

First Impressions: Durarara!!

Durarara!! is a very Shin Megami Tensei-esque show in the sense that it perfectly combines modern-day urban culture with supernatural elements and a fantastic cast of characters, and actually dares to justify doing so. Furthermore, the artwork for the show is based on designs by Suzuhito Yasuda, who did the designs for Devil Survivor, and it’s evident right away. Beyond Yasuda’s unique style, every aspect of Durarara!!’s art is so highly polished, saturated and slick, it’s probably one of the best-looking series I’ve watched in years. Throw in the fantastic OP and ED sequences that capture the spirit of the series perfectly, and you’ve got one hell of a show.

Ikebukuro culture; its inhabitants; an organized fight against crime. I said earlier that Durarara!! was extremely character-driven, and it really is. To the point where, 10 episodes in, I’m still not entirely sure what the show is about…but that’s okay, because I’m in no hurry to find out. Right now, it’s doing a fantastic job of blending slice-of-life with supernatural and action elements, and really, all I care about is being taken along for the ride.

Shows like these are the reason I got into anime in the first place. Something that dares to be different, cool, and enthusiastic all at once, but is deep enough to make you think. Something that makes you feel cool just to be watching it. Highly recommended and you can watch it on Crunchyroll.

Oh, i herd you like Durarara!! ?

Its my favorite Anime this year. I can already tell, unless they do a ToraDora!²

  • digitaldevil0

It’s like Shin Meagmi Tensei? Now I am interested.

    • Vino21

Ugh….Ishaan, stop saying such misleading things… This show is *nothing* like anything Shin Megami related… Absolutely *NOTHING* like it…

Look. It’s from the dude who wrote Baccano! That’s like, more than enough incentive to watch instead of some way-off comparison, right?

      • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Hey, it’s all subjective. It very much gave me an Atlus-vibe.

        • Vino21

One time, I caught a mook on Gamefaqs say “Xenosaga reminds me a lot of Kingdom Hearts.” Someone else asks him if they played anything *other* than XS or KH, to which they replied “I don’t have to.”

The closest Durarara gets to SMT is Persona 4, and even then, it’s downright impossible to find any comparisons – absolutely impossible, no chance in hell. Which begs the question…have you played/watched anything else…? =/

          • Vanilla

Hey, cut him some slack–I’ve seen LOADS of anime and my first thought was that it really was SMT (mainly Devil Survivor)-meets-TWEWY-meets-anime. Among the nostalgia factor of having a modern-day-Japan scenario, there’s also an element of suspense and even just a slight bit of horror. Ishaan’s not saying that this anime is the culmination of everything SMT–just that the vibe is there.

Baccano! is even LESS like Durarara!! is. It’s a bunch of gore (not that I’m ripping on it for that–I enjoy Baccano). Sure, there’s the jigsaw-esque POV narrative, but that’s more of a recurring literary thing. The anime OP is styled the same, but that’s because it’s by the same studio.

          • Vino21

Not just studio…like I said, Ryohgo Narita also wrote Durarara. That’s why I say there’s more merit in the comparison of a writer, than say something else that really isn’t there…

Baccano and Durarara are worlds apart – but it’s still the same dude. That’s why there’s more merit in that than fervently trying to compare superfluous vibes.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

            Thanks, Vanilla. :)

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

You understand that Bayonetta and Okami had the same producer, right? Going by your theory, it’s smarter to draw comparisons between those two rather than, say, Okami and Zelda.

          • Vino21

Actually, yes. :) Cause that, you can celebrate the author/producer for his sense of variety. X3

          • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

Motherf***** I hate it when I click “like” instead of “reply”.

Vino is completely off base here.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

That’s equally superfluous. Like I said, subjective. :P

          • Vino21

            Details.

          • Vanilla

Yes, I’m aware that they’re by the same writer. But what is it in Baccano that you find worth comparing to Durarara besides obvious stylistic elements (like the ones I pointed out about the animation studio)?

It’s totally fine for you to have a different opinion, but it’s just downright rude to just stamp on Ishaan’s opinion when there are people who thought the same thing. If someone else decides, “Hey this isn’t an SMT clone, I don’t want to watch it even though it’s potentially a great series,” then that’s their problem. I’ll take this over Trinity Soul any day.

          • Vino21

You take this whole internet comments thing way too personally.

          • Moriken

Oh, don’t mention Trinity Soul… At least the soundtrack was good.
I think it’s very noticeable in the characterization that the shows are by the same writer; he’s got a knack for writing good characters in the light novel medium, without using all those anime-cliches (tsuntsun blabla >_>).
But Durarara!! is a lot slower/calmer than Baccano!

          • Vanilla

Maybe, but at least I have a shred of respect where it’s deserved on the internet. This isn’t some forum filled with sophomoric windbags. This is more than a step up, and it’s no good for the community to have commenters outright ripping on the writers for having opinions. :/

But enough of that. If you don’t see SMT, then you don’t see SMT and that’s fine.

        • Moriken

You don’t happen to have played Devil Survivor before? :D
Character designer is the same guy, after all…

          • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Yup, Suzuhito Yasuda! I’m more familiar from his manga projects; Yozakura Quartet, Kamisama Kazoku, and my first and favorite work of his, Ebony & Ivory – a short story he contributed to Range Murata’s project, “Robot”.
            http://longrangebullet.info/murata/images/contrib/pub/robot/robot-yasuda.jpg
I highly recommended that collection. Maybe not so much if you’re already versed in alternative manga or obscure/bizarre doujins, but it is a neat publication that made it to U.S. shore (most of them, anyway).

It’s pretty amazing seeing him so well known now (more-or-less). Hope to see his designs in more games.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I love Devil Survivor. We we were all playing it around on the same time on SE, so there was a period of one week where everyone on staff was sending e-mails back and forth, discussing parties and demons. That was fun. :D

      • Dansolo

I agree. I LOVE Durarara! and am glad to see it featured places, but I wouldn’t call it very SMT-like, either. Personally, I like it more than Baccano, but I could see that it was from the same guy immediately. Also, I’m amused by the other anime references e.g. Spice & Wolf, Jigoku Shoujo (“ippen, shin de miru?”), etc.

  • vall03

so thats why I thought Ryuugamine looks familiar and he somewhat resembles Atsuro without a cap!

    • vall03

oh this got me thinking also, has there even been a Dullahan demon in any SMT game? I dont think I remember…

  • Soma

Great write up, Ishaan. And thanks for directing me to this series. :D
    It’s absolutely fantastic.
Rarely do I follow a series on an episode-by-episode basis. Typically, I wait for the whole series to finish airing and then watch it all at once.
However, Durarara!! is different. Each week I’m waiting with great anticipation for the next episode. Will be watching episode 11 tonight!

Oh, and … ASAHI WA NOBORUUU! YEAH!

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

      IIIIIIIIIZAYAAAAA!!!!

      • http://ofurotaimu.dreamwidth.org shirokiryuu

        HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I love Izaya, I love this show.

Athough I think similar in setting, and the character designer is the same as Devil Survivor, but the story telling style is completely different from SMT.

        Baccano was great too!

      • Vino21

        Number One Troll. Ever.

  • doubleO7

Sounds interesting. Hopefully someone like FUNimation picks this up for a US release.

  • chronical

It’s my favourite anime of all time, to be honest.

  • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

*sigh* I wish I had more time to watch anime. You don’t even want to know my show queue, Ishaan… but this one’s definitely in it. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to stop time and catch up on things!

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Tell me about it. I need a week where the world just…stops…and waits for me to catch up with everything going on with it. Anime, games, books…everything. My anime waiting-list is huge, too…going all the way back to some 90s stuff… -_-

      • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Haha, oh yeah. I thought it’d be smart of me to try to focus on the 12-13 episode series’ first… that backfired. Haha…! Fortunately, I’m getting more picky so I can weed out the garbage after an episode or two, but still… making the 45 minutes to watch even those…!!!

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Yea, I’m super picky now, too. I’m so glad to see this new light novel-to-anime trend because it’s really giving the anime industry a crutch they can rely on, at least for the time being. There’s so much crap out there at the moment that just needs to be filtered out.

          • Vino21

Unfortunately, most of these light novel-to-anime transitions remain painfully incomplete… Full Metal Panic, Baccano, Spice & Wolf, Shakugan no Shana, Toaru Majutsu no Index…it goes on.

The anime always remains incomplete…with the studios giving no sign whether they’ll ever finish. FMP has been on a very painful, cliffhanger hiatus for quite a while now…

          • Moriken

Or get the “original-ending” or “arbitrary-changes”-treatments.
The original ending (novel) for Asura Cryin’ which I read up seemed to have been much better and satisfying, but that show suffered from too much happening anyway; but still, whyever anime studios feel the need to randomly change the story of something that is perfectly fine…
At least we can be sure that Index should get a 2nd season, it’s been successfull enough, what with Railgun running now and stuff. But I’d love more FMP *_*
I could read the novels but…a) time, b) importing is annoying.

          • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Watch baka to testo to shoukanjou! :D Ive been watching that as i watch this one, baka to testo have great animation with great colors, and i dont know why but it gives me a tomeki memorial style feeling. Anyway, pretty funny and great story, it is in episode 11 or 12 (forgot o.o) and is 13 in total, so is short :P

      • Vino21

90s? Escaflowne better be on that list…. =3

      • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

        A week? I’d rather have a month… or two…. *sigh*

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Initially, I was going to say a month…but then I thought about it for a moment and figured I’d probably end up bored out of my mind. >_>

  • http://twitter.com/T1A60 T1A60

    this Anime is AWESOME!!

  • nonoko

Wow awesome! Thanks for recommending this, I’ll totally be watching it.

  • EvilAkito

I want to watch this show, but I first need to finish up my backlog. There are usually at least two or three good shows each season, and it’s damn hard to keep up.

  • BobTheCat

It looks good but I couldn’t help but notice the terrible appearance of the sole black character in it.

Can Japanese artists not make a black character without making them look like a racist caricature?

    >.>

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

      Actually, he’s Russian. :p

      • BobTheCat

Yes he is russian, but what I meant is that the artists are unable to show he is black without using exaggerated racial attributes.

  • Vanilla

Hey, um, what’s with the ads showing up IN the comment boxes? D:

Drrr!! is excellent. I started watching not too long after it started airing, and it really has me hooked. I’m pretty picky about what I watch as well because, well, first I don’t just watch anime for the pretty picture and I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. Dead god, episode 10 was epic.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I literally JUST got done with 11 and it rocked my socks off. :’D

      *sniff*

      There’s still hope for anime in this day and age after all… ;_;

      • Vanilla

Dude, same here! I had it sitting on my computer from last night but I was busy catching up on all of the FFXIII I missed during finals week. I hate Drrr!! cliffhangers. I’ve been watching Baccano here and there in between releases to keep my unhappiness at bay. D:

I was getting really worried about the new releases in anime during the past two years. It seems like 2005-2008 was a peak period for some of the newer series and then it started to die down.

  • puchinri

It kinda does give me a SMT vibe, but I can really see how it’s a Narita work too.
And I’m so happy that we have Durarara! I’m actually quite enjoying this season’s anime, and the last time I able to enjoy anime or a particlar season was in 08, and before that I had to watch 90s stuff for fun. (Excluding TTGL)

I think Durarara’s charm lies in the fact it does have a nostalgia factor, but it’s so damn refreshing. It’s like when a game with nice graphics comes out on the PS2 and has even better story and gameplay, even amongst all the FFXIII’s and pwnsauce games. And in that way, it’s probably a SMT game too.

And all the parodies of DRRR!’s ending? Love them.
We should see how many games and anime get the Trust Me parody.

  • angkor

What a silly excuse to review an anime series.

    • Vino21

That’s….harsh. Especially considering Siliconera used to cover anime a while back ago, too…

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Ojsinnerz Firo_Prochainezo

I still prefer Baccano!, but DRRR is fine too.

    • Vino21

Hey! Firo, how ya doin’ ol’ buddy! :3

  • Vino (Tim N)

An anime impressions post? About Durarara?! AWESOME. I’m all caught up with you guys, and yeah, this series is great. Baccano was awesome, but this series is crazy amazing.

  • holyPaladin

Durarara!! is the best anime this season

  • Rinkudinku

I had no idea this was from the writer of Baccano.. I’ll hafta give this a shot.

  • onlymybass

A lot of people really like this show. I’m watching it as well, but I’m having a hard time staying interested in it for more than one episode. The last episode I watched was the GAR-tender episode. I’m like, what, 4 episodes behind right now? When I watch it I’m completely into it, but after that I just can’t watch it again…

P.S. My favorite this season is Idiots and Tests, just because I’m LOVE comedy.

  • Nekobo

Relevant comparisons or not, if anything, the slightest mention of SMT/Persona usually sets the comments section on fire. :)

With that said, I’ll check it out sometime.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

When I first watched its trailer I was like “hmm not bad really looking foward to it!” but when the first ep comes out the show is not that great its kinda boring I guess this type of anime isn’t for anyone.

  • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

Absolute best show since Bakemonogatri. And one of the best in recent memory, period.

I need to watch Baccano still, if I like Durarara, sounds like I’ll like that!

    (Also, more anime posts please!)

  • dgknight500

I love this show! The twist is the middle was extremely well-crafted and the characters are very likable. It starts of a bit mysterious but you get enough clues and can start to piece things together which I find very enjoyable. Not to mention that the music is kick-ass!

  • TyeTheCzar

That’s something I’m watching right now! By the way, the same studio and author that did this anime also did the pulp 30s-era masterpiece Baccano! is on Funimation’s website and Youtube.

  • TyeTheCzar

Don’t mind me. Just posting this page on Facebook.
