Japanese super-publisher Kodansha recently updated their YouTube channel with videos of two of their creators hard at work. The first video is of Zatch Bell creator Makoto Raiku drawing a page from his ongoing series, Doubutsu no Kuni.

The second video is of Yoshitoki Ooima, drawing a page from the manga adaptation of Mardock Scramble, a sci-fi novel series.

Its nice to see a professional artist’s work in progress. I hope they upload more videos. Its a good way to inspire others.

The female artist’s caption was funny :).. it’s amazing, I’ve drawn for years but have only used a ballpoint pen and never looked into the professional equipment like G pen and such… I remember I was never good at drawing mechanical things too.. I want to see how screentone is applied.. would be cool to see vetern post this kind of videos too.. kind of interested to check out in Doubutsu no Kuni now. Kudos to all manga-ka doing all this day in and day out making weekly deadlines.. Need to go read more Bakuman too even though I don’t care much for the art..

  • oh woa i didnt knew zatch bell creator started something else, and uh, a big jump i see, animal country… mmm

  • Wow All that work into a single panel, this is so cool to watch.

Is the second artist using a Pentel p207? I love those mechanical pencils! I didn’t you could get blue lead for it too..

  • Manga drawing can be reeeeaaaalllyyy labor intensive work, it’s perfectly normal for many mangaka (manga artists) that they can only have 3-4 hours of sleep everyday to keep up with their manga series on weekly magazines (or monthly). Now it’s bit better as people started to use PC’s to do coloring (altho its in black and white).
