First Impressions: Mayoi Neko Overrun

Recommended Videos

While there’s still a couple redeemable series that I might be personally interested in this anime season, for this week’s impressions, I dug deep at the bottom of the barrel and came out faced with a rather dire choice: Kaichou wa Maid-sama VS. Mayoi Neko Overrun — Spring 2010’s obligatory moe filth affairs.

Eventually, I settled on the latter, thanks in part to a friend warning me about Maid-sama’s particularly detestable leads (not that Mayoi Neko’s are any better as you’ll learn in a moment). And so, we’re going to talk about the wonderful world of catgirls, lolis and tsunderes. And panties. Lots of panties.

In fact, here’s the beauty of it all: Mayoi Neko’s very first scene features panties. On a seven-year-old no less. Moments later, the scene cuts to the future, where the the seven-year-old is now grown-up (and by grown up, I mean 15), and you catch a glimpse of her panties again as she wakes a friend up from bed; leg raised high, one foot planted firmly over his shoulder as she pulls him up. No, I don’t know why she needs to be in such a compromising position in order to wake him up.

“Blue, white, blue, white…” the young lad mutters observantly, describing the fine fabric of her undergarments, his face now inches from her crotch. “DIE TWICE!” the girl yells angrily, administering a solid kick to his face, allowing yet another glimpse of her crotch. Almost as if to warn the viewer of things to come, a tubby cat resting on a shelf above the bed yawns wide.

Then, the intro kicks in. It’s filled with lots of “nyan” and upskirt shots and nosebleeds and blushy little moe girls. Welcome to Mayoi Neko Overrun.

It turns out the poor sap that got kicked prior to the intro is Takumi Tsuzuki, your protagonist. His friend, the panty girl — a by-the-books tsundere — is Serizawa Fumino.

“It’s not like I was waiting for you!” Serizawa exclaims, indignantly, in typical tsundere fashion, as Takumi exits his house for school, finding her leaning against a lamppost, in wait for him. As they walk to school together, the camera zooms in behind her ass for a good several seconds (as depicted in the fine screenshot above), teasing another glimpse of her panties but never quite giving it to you. Then, as she continues to stroll at a leisurely pace, it cuts to her front for an upskirt shot, but still no panties. Oh, you cunning devils!

Over the course of the next few minutes, the show introduces its other characters, who are Takumi and Serizawa’s friends. One of them is an otaku obsessed with Serizawa’s panties. The other studies martial arts and isn’t a pervert, so naturally, he isn’t very important. As Takumi and Co. reach school, you get to meet Umenomori Chise, granddaughter of the headmaster, accompanied by her two maids.

Chise is the resident loli with a flat chest and a voice that makes you feel like bashing your head against the nearest wall. A quick slapstick gag follows, allowing for a peek at her completely uninteresting naked body. Okay, gag’s over! Time to get down to serious business.

As it turns out, Takumi and Serizawa are orphans. Takumi and his friends run a confectionery store together. They have an impending delivery to make…only the cake they were supposed to deliver has been gobbled up by someone else. They suspect this one kid of the crime. Only, it wasn’t the kid — it was a giant human cat (no, really). As everyone confers about just how to catch the feline perpetrator, Mayoi Neko chooses to remind you of the show you’re watching by depicting the entire scene from below Serizawa’s skirt.

Then there’s a chase scene and they all run around the city, trying to capture this nekomimi, but to no avail. But wait! When Takumi returns home, he learns that — GASP! — his oddball onee-san with ginormous breasts has decided to adopt a new pet. Guess who it is! “Nyan.”

And that’s the gist of the first episode, with a few details left out. So yes, I would fully recommend watching Mayoi Neko Overrun, but only so that you never entertain the thought of watching anything else like it ever again.
