http://storage.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/live_1600_card.jpg When it comes to tracking video game revenue in North America, the NPD group divide industry performance into three segments: hardware sales, software sales and accessory sales. While “hardware sales” refer primarily to actual video game consoles, “accessory sales” include extra controllers that are purchased separately or add-ons like the Wii wheel for Mario Kart.

During the period of January – April 2010, where all other segments of game revenue were down compared to the same period in 2009, accessory sales were up by 2%. While that may not seem like much, it’s a welcome statistic alongside the 20% decline in hardware sales.

To what can we attribute this growth? Xbox Live 1600 point game cards, according to the NPD group, which were the best-selling accessory during both March and April.

Amazon has the 1600 MS pt cards on sale for $16.54 (usually $20) since a couple of days ago and I just picked up three of them, I alrdy have 3600 pts alrdy so I don’t want to stock so many… I don’t buy that many XBLA games unless they’re on sale.Well, since 360′s DLCs are by points unlike Wii pts or PSN by dollar, you can save if you could get the cards cheap. Like the Nier DLC would pretty much cost me $5.60 (560 MS pts) instead of $7 (+ 7% tax) on PSN. It’s even more expensive on the Jpn PSN, 840 yen, bloodsucker…
