Shortly thereafter, the manga, handled by Yukiko Seike, began serialization in the publisher’s Monthly Afternoon magazine on Tuesday.

5 Centimeters Per Second tells the story of a distanced love between Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari, close friends that find themselves drifting farther apart over a period of time, and is widely considered on par with a Miyazaki movie with regard to direction and storytelling. A novelization written by Shinkai himself is currently available in Japan.

I loved that movie, saw this quite a few years back and I remember I was extremely touched by it, it really rang true w/ me. Definitely better than any of the Miyazaki stuff in recent years. Well, I loved Ghibli’s “I Can Hear the Sea” (Umi ga Kikoeru), but that wasn’t directed by him.

For those who enjoy genuine bittersweet romance (none of the moe stuff), 5cm is definitely one of the best anime movies in quite some time and should not be missed.

I don’t know I’m alone or not but I’m not impressed with this anime like I’m not impressed with Ghibli anime too..I’m impressed with Evangelion 2.22 :D

Well, the quality of the animation, music and the filming were big factors for this anime to be this good. The novel of 5cm is great, probably because it was written by Shinkai himself.Unless the manga has excellent drawing and uses a suitable art style (in other words, no moe), I am not sure it will be that great.

It was a great movie, but man the ending pissed me off big time. I’m usually ok with bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) love stories now and then, but man that ending dropped my enjoyment of it a couple of notches.

For that reason I have close to no interest in the manga unless I hear pretty good things about it.
