Hunter x Hunter Manga On Hiatus Again

By Ishaan . May 29, 2010 . 4:00pm

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/hunterxhunter.jpg Hunter x Hunter manga-ka Yoshihiro Togashi is going on hiatus again, according to research by Canned Dogs. Togashi has temporarily cease work following issue 26 of this year’s Shounen Jump magazine.

The Hunter x Hunter series is known for its frequent hiatuses, usually occurring every ten chapters. Togashi first went on hiatus in 2005, reportedly due to an illness of some sort, if rumours are to be believed. Since then, the manga-ka’s most recent hiatus lasted from December 2008 through January 2010. At present, Hunter x Hunter is on its 308th chapter.

Hm.. this is not exactly news right, HxH’s serialization has been like that for quite a few years now, 10 chapters, long hiatus, 10 more chapters.. if Togashi can’t handle a weekly pace (a burnt out veteran artist), he should draw monthly like Watsuki. HxH is great though when a tankoubon does come out, I hope he would wrap up the Kimera Ant arc soon. The manga first started in 1998, if it had gone on a regular weekly pace, it would have about 50 some volumes now, even more than Naruto (Gon and Naruto actually shared the same seiyuu :) … I don’t mind him taking his time to come up w/ a great story though. The TV series and OVAs were great too except the Greed Island OVA, wonder if they would ever animate Kimera Ant arc at the end.. Love the guy for his sci fi shorts like Level E and YuYu Hakusho eternally. This man had a great influence on me. Hopefully vol. 28 would come out soon…

It is news because the people who just started following recently wouldn’t know about all the other hiatuses or even if they did, they may not have known when the hiatus was going to be because it’s been more than 10 chapters since the last hiatus. Also, this current string was 20 chapters before hiatus. So maybe the mangaka’s getting better or something

The point is the serialization has been sporadic and not been continuous for many years now, I don’t see how this is relevant unless for those who decide if they should get the Weekly Shounen Jump solely for HxH. *whipped out manga to chk the release dates*vol. 21 2/9/2005vol. 22 7/9/2005vol. 23 3/8/2006vol. 24 10/9/2007vol. 25 3/9/2008vol. 26 10/8/2008vol. 27 12/30/2009The last book (vol. 27) took as long as over a year to come out. Usually for a manga serialized weekly in Jump, a tankoubon comes out every 2-3 months. Right now I’m still waiting for vol. 28, but I’m not holding my breath because there’s no set pace for Togashi anymore. He used the sickness excuse many years ago, and now Jump doesn’t even give an reason whenever they announce the start of the serial anymore, because Togashi gets to work at his own pace, considering his status, and fans just want to series wrap up eventually..

What’s the sickness though? I heard he was schizophrenic now or something… and that the last chapters make little sense/there’s a big difference in art quality and story before and after hiatus?

          • Aoshi00

They haven’t said, that’s a common excuse for pausing a serial though, either being sick or the need for the author to do research, sometimes they’re just burnt out having drawn for so long. The art is more of a stylistic choice I think, and Togashi has always been into the darker human stuff, ever since the last part of YuYu Hakusho (Sensui arc, the anime was pretty tame compared to the manga anyway). Level E was like a pretty dark sci-fi, even his early works before YuYu had a tiny hint of darker themes, That’s just his twisted personality. Would being married to Takeuchi Naoko (Sailormoon’s author) have something to do w/ it lol.. I wish Watsuki would be as bold as him, but he’s more into the happier stuff, even Embalming isn’t that dark..

thanks for the reply and insight :)

Hmm I only watch HxH anime when I was kid and it’s interesting.
Wonder if they continue Greed Island?

    • Aoshi00

The 2nd half of the Gen’ei Ryoudan arc and Greed Island Arc were made into 3 OVAs many years ago alrdy… only the last ongoing Kimera Ant arc hasn’t been yet. Yea, the TV series was really good, especially loved Goto Takayuki’s (Please Save My Earth, Baby and Me) char design. The OVA’s animation weren’t as good as the TV series’s.

      • holyPaladin

Oh I mentioned the OVA then.
Wonder if they will continue to make OVA after Greed Island I mean

        • Aoshi00

I suppose when the Kimera Ant arc (or the whole HxH manga) finally does conclude, there would be a chance for another (or several) OVA series.. I’m content w/ the manga though, the last couple OVAs weren’t that great..

I think there could be another arc after the Chimera Ant Arc….but hopefully the main characters i mean the 4 main characters will be together again…i think that’s what missing…though Chimera wasn’t as great like the earlier Ova’s at some point it’s still thrilling to read more surprise…and what i notice also on togashi’s work today some of his latests chapters are wordy

          • Aoshi00

Yea, it’d be great if he does another arc after Chimera Ant, but at the rate of the serial I’m not sure if he’s interested, or has the energy. I preferred Chimera Ant to Greed Island though, it’s very violent reflecting our society. It’s interesting he uses so much text like a novel to describe the battles and the chars’ psyche, Togashi always surprises you. I’m not following the weekly installments at all, so I wish Vol. 28 would come out soon.

I just want to know what happens next with Kurapika and Leorio

  • fuzzy_hobo

I’m just glad we got 20 chapters instead of the usual 10 before hiatus. I want the Chimera Ant arc to finish so he can get back to the Genei Ryoudan and Kurapika! He’s so close! (I hope…)

My sentiments exactly. This is one of the few I’ve kept following from when I first read it years ago O.o

  • epy

Wait, the Kimera Ant arc is not finished yet? I haven’t read this one in ages (same with Berserk) so I was expecting for at least that arc to be finished.

  • shion16
