Warner Bros. Releasing New Mortal Kombat Game In 2011

While the Mortal Kombat buzz is still in the air, following the release of the Rebirth short, Warner Bros. have an announcement of their own to make with regard to the franchise: that they’re — surprise! — developing a new game in the series.

This latest entry, simply titled Mortal Kombat, is being handled by the original MK Midway studio in Chicago, still led by franchise co-creator Ed Boon. Now renamed NetherRealm Studios, the team is hard at work, in preparation for a 2011 release. WB were keen to point out the added focus on the game’s story mode, which they claim will be the “deepest” of any fighting game yet.

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!” By gruesome, Boon means Kung Lao using his hat like a buzzsaw, as seen in this teaser trailer.

  • I’m actually kind of excited. The last few ones and Shaolin Monks were pretty fun.

I love Mortal Kombat. This looks awesome.

  • Super awesome and I heard it’ll be twice as gory. The king has returned to its former glory. can’t wait.

Wow! Looks great! It’s great to be a lover of 2D fighters nowadays!

How many times has the MK series claimed that their upcoming game would be the “deepest yet” or some other similar phrase? And out of how many of those claims has the game always been a disappointment? Like, Armageddon sounded cool on paper, but when you actually got around to playing it… ugh. However, even with that in mind, I’m betting I’d still get the game before it price drops (again ><) lol.

EDIT: speaking of which, that trailer looks very "same old" to me, and still very much based on using special moves all the time. The seller to me: Kung Lao's finishing move there. ^_^!

  • I’d love to see an arcade version of a #WarnerBros #MK.
