Fan-made King’s Quest Sequel Still Coming

To the disappointment of many, earlier this year, Activision halted progress of The Silver Lining, a fan-developed sequel to King’s Quest — in production at Phoenix Online Studios — after property rights of the Sierra I.P. were transferred to them.

Luckily, things have turned around since then, and, thanks to a mutual agreement between the two parties, The Silver Lining will be seeing an “official” free release after all — as an episodic series. The debut episode, What is Decreed Must Be, will release on July 10th, with more episodes to follow throughout the remainder of the year.

It’s really amazing that this is finally coming out. Most fan games end up either dying early when the developers realize just how much effort it actually takes to make a game, get shot down by the owners of the game’s IP, or if they do see the light of day, wind up being awful.

Very rarely does a truly amazing fan game like The Silver Lining manage to overcome all those hurdles. The Silver Lining devs deserve all the praise they get for the sheer amount of time and effort that went into making this project a reality.

  • This is really great news. Though I only ever played Kings Quest 6 & 7 I really love the games (I made a start on 8 but quit due to it being so different). Looking forward to the release!
