Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Set For Next Spring

By Spencer . July 16, 2010 . 12:30pm

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Set For Next SpringSiliconera readers know their silhouettes! NIS America is bringing Ar Tonelico III to North America under the name Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel.

Ar Tonelico Qoga has a revamped battle system, which is more action packed than its predecessors. You can run on the field and tap to the rhythm of the music to power up song magic.

The third and final game in the Ar Tonelico series takes place in Sol Cluster. Clustania’s machinations are to enslave humans with the power of song magic from Reyvateils. Instead of siding with Clustania these two key Reyvateils join Aoto and fight back. The cosmosphere system is back and you’ll get to know the Reyvateils in your group on a deeper level and boost their skills by diving into their minds. As you progress through the game, your actions determine which ending to the Ar Tonelico series you’ll see.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel is scheduled to come out in spring 2011.

Really, really looking forward to this. Weird title though.

  • http://twitter.com/T1A60 T1A60

    MUST…GET!! awesome news! :D

  • http://www.ukanime.com abigsmurf

Presumably NISA never actually expect anyone to ask for this in a store…

The second game was especially bad for throwing unfamiliar terms and technobabble at you with minimal explanation. Hopefully this won’t quite be so bad, the second was occasionally hard to follow (the bad localisation didn’t help).

I am looking forward to it though.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Eh, we’ll just learn to refer to it at ATIII.

  • M’iau M’iaut

At least the title sounds better than the initial reports of Ar Tonelico: Qoga/Quga. That word may mean something it the in game language but I still think using gibberish like that won’t help bring new faces to the game.

Can understand the desire to improve quality by limiting quantity, but if Rurona is pretty much done, would a holiday window really been that out of possibility? Because looking at expected titles, Neptune and Totori will need to find a release home as will Disgaea 4 — plus potential PSP wildcards like Antiphonia or the Marl Collection.

The PSP selection would definitely be enhanced with one of the latter, since even though both the of their announcements are solid titles, they fill the same hardcore roguelike slot basically every other NISA PSP title is.

    • aquagon

By the way, “Qoga” means either “ending/end of the world” in Hymmnos, and that word itself already makes it very close to the literal translation of the JP subtitle.
And careful with calling gibberish something that has a very important place in the game.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Yes, but the game will be bought by folks who speak English, not Hymmnos, and it is not as if the series has ever explained how the language works to the player, you just see some techo-looking ‘letters’ when one of the girls speaks it.

Using something like “Qoga” or “Quga” — and I’ve already seen both used in articles relating to yesterdays announcement — only adds a level of misunderstanding or confusion to a potential buyer, and that in our world, is usually not a good thing.

        • Ereek

Agreed, on all accounts. I planned on typing out this really long reply backing up your statement, but I have work to do and can’t today. So just let’s say that I agree.

        • http://www.myspace.com/effluentrainfall Effluent Rainfall

In their defense, I think it’s a right pretty title overall; “Knell of Ar Ciel” rolls well off the tongue. Besides which, “Ar tonelico” is itself very alien, so I don’t suspect the additional layer of “Qoga” is going to exacerbate it in any particular fashion.

I don’t know why it was necessary, I’ll grant, and I’m not keen on the logo.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

The Knell of Ar Ciel is actually very, VERY accurate.

In fact, you could argue it’s almost spoilerish, which is kinda shame, if you’ve been following the Ar Tonelico trilogy.

(But don’t mind the person who cheats with the crib notes and the Japanese games in the background…)

          • M’iau M’iaut

I got no issue with that part of the name, which yes, even hints at the musical elements kind of nicely.

It’s that other darn word, which in game language or not, is gonna come out as “ooga booga” or worse in our mother tongue.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

            (Can’t chain, thread limit)

I’m more worried about the legal ramifications of Ar Tonelico 3, than anything…

          • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EFGE5WRV7566OBZYKPS3QLP7OI Chloe

Heh, I was about to make that point. How many of us really know that “Ar tonelico” means “the only divine tree”?

          • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

Hey, I spent three games learning that one in Japanese! I dispute that! Anyone who knows the Ar – Who am I kidding? I didn’t have a Reyvatail mother, which is probably a blessing in itself, since I don’t want to be dependent on crystals for the rest of my life.

On a much more serious note, Ar Tonelico (the name) isn’t going to endear people who expect anything remotely pronounceable… Then again, the idea being that barring a few things, (including the jabs that AT3 makes at Microsoft Vista) it’s definitely in the realm of sci-fi fantasy.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I am offended that you discount the language of my people, sir! Do you know how hard it was to grow up with a Reyvateil mom in the middle of Long Island?

          • M’iau M’iaut

And here I just chalked that up to a New York accent.

      • kariohki

I understand that hymmnos is important and whatnot, but half of it looks like gibberish to me, and I’ve played the games. Imagine what a person who doesn’t know anything about the series would think/read.

        • http://pto.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

*raises hand sadly as she is one of those people who’s never been introduced to the series*

          • Ereek

You’re missing out! Go, go try them now!

          • http://pto.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

I’ll have to try and find out if they’ve made any PAL releases. You all make it sound so interesting.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

            To MelodyKitn: (Thread limit)

Ar Tonelico 1 was released in PAL in Europe under Koei (Has English, even though it never showed up in the UK) with no substantial changes.

Ar Tonelco 2 was released in PAL in Europe under Koei (And this time showed up in the UK) and fixes a bug with the US release where an enemy could literally crash the game.

  • raymk

I just got an twitter update and came here to see if it was true. I mean i knew the game was coming out in the west but i wanted to see if the tweet update was right.

  • http://twitter.com/Sukwendo Sukwendo

So looking forward to this! But what do they mean “final”? It would be a foolish move to cut this IP off!

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

      Blame Namco Bandai then.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

It’s the last game in the series, due to the fact that the events on the world come to a head. No spoilers, apart from the fact if there’s a fourth, the premise will be changed greatly.

  • kariohki

Someone did the research with the title…dare I say that I’m pleased?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Hiryuu

Well, you kept your mid-July promise, NISA. Now, let’s see you deliver.

Would wholly make up for AT2 if you can.

  • Finalstar2007

epic news is epic. cant wait

  • FHOIW

    Rwarrrr! Epiiiiiic!

  • Electrium

I very much want this game. Thanks NISA!

  • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

I’m curious how they’re going to handle the various scenes and themes within Ar Tonelico 3, but then again, I’ve finished THAT from end to end as well…

I might do another playthrough, after Atelier Rorona…

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

lol why not Ar tonelico 3… anyway…

OMG FINALLY AHDAHDHAHDAH I LOVE THE WORLD, ILOVE MY TEACHERS EVEN IF THEY SUCK, I LOVE MY FAMILY, ahhhhhhhh when i have this game in my hands i will feel complete

  • http://otoboku.se manga

So. Need to find a job fast then.

Really fast since this year isn´t over yet and they bring out this kind of game that early on? Great in giving the fans what they want. Bad for my wallet.

    Great job NISA!!

Now get to work on bugfixing :)

And please, leave the names as they are in the original Japanese language even if they do sound weird when spoken in English.

  • Xien12

WHY HELLO THERE TERRIBLY DESIGNED LOGO.

  • Yeshua49

Good, and it seem it will have an european release as well ^_^

  • neo_firenze

Count me in the group that thinks the title is silly. I’m never a big fan of hard to pronounce titles, or titles that require previous knowledge of game details to understand.

NISA seems to be firing on all cylinders in the bad name/subtitle department today though. Cladun (WTF was wrong with “Classic Dungeon”)? Qoga? Z.H.P: Silly overly long subtitle?

Ugh. I’ll buy all three on day 1, but I think the names could use a lot of work.

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Ive played the first 2 ar tonelicos, and i dont get the sub tittle… all i can think is that this is the name of the last tower of ar tonelico. And i think the subtitle of Cladun, “this is a rpg” is freaking hilarous xD but i cant get the cladun part, maybe is not really good or possible to use Classic dungeon for the US, and Z.H.P., …lol, this last was is really weird, but meh, the psp tittles are as weird as good, and this makes ‘em charming xD

      • Yeshua49

For Ar Tonelico 3 Qoga mean end or demise in hymnos ( the language used by reyvateil to sing ), and the tower’s name is Sol Cluster ( it was Sol Cielo for AT1 and Sol Marta for AT2 ), for Ar ciel I’m not sure but I think it’s simply the name of the world where lie the 3 towers ( I’m not sure if you were wondering about Qoga or Ar Ciel ). I’m wondering what knell mean, I have searched on word reference for a translation in my nattive language but it doesn’t know this word as well^^’[EDIT]Knell’s definition has been found.

        • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

well, ar tonelico does have its own language

        • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EFGE5WRV7566OBZYKPS3QLP7OI Chloe

The towers are simply “Ar tonelico”. Yes, all of them. Sol Marta is a relay station to the first tower (because the second tower isn’t a server itself… the only server in that region is Infel Phira). Sol Ciel and Sol Cluster are regions where the Ar tonelico towers are located, like Metafalss.

  • neo_firenze

grrr forum loading issues making me edit this post that didn’t “reply” correctly ;)

@manga – I have the opposite problem… need to find a way to make my job take up less time! Too many games to play!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Glad to see this officially announced, hope it’s uncensored and the DLC is on its way too, BUT…I must admit I have no idea how to even pronounce that. Plus, I think the “3″ would’ve been nice. The “3″ worked.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Did not see that coming….Day One purchase for me, though I wouldn’t be able to play until I finish all the other NIS RPGs that came out this year.

Now if only Namco/Bandai could do the same thing with their Tales series.

  • JustaGenericUser

But the important question IS! Will they still have the, uh, transformation stuff? Somehow I don’t think soccer moms in America will take that stuff too well.

    • rock1644

I don’t think it will be an issue. Deathsmiles was released here recently and it features young female characters like AT3 and plenty of fanservice, and it got a Teen rating.

      • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

Deathsmiles is actually very tame compared to AT3.

Without getting into spoilers, there’s a lot more interaction, and there’s some much more… adultish themes. One’s in Saki’s cosmosphere, and there’s a few scenes which could be taken the wrong way.

        By the way, Saki’s 15, Finnel’s 17, which doesn’t help any.

        • M’iau M’iaut

We will see, but I certainly hope NISA realizes that given their new public face, any attempt to change or censor that is not directly the result of an ESRB demand would be utter suicide. On the support side of things Deathsmiles has reviewed well, regardless of the 11 and 12 year olds involved. Yes, Deathsmiles is not the same content as in this title, but the bit of Agarest War flak was very short lived.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

Deathsmiles has nothing on it. (I’ve played all the said games from end to end, AT3 included.)

Wearing gothic lolita clothing is nothing compared to the themes, which are general themes as well as a series of particular scenes.

There’s a degree of interaction which goes much further than a sprite wearing a certain set of clothing and flying high enough to see under your skirt.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the ESRB may advise the application as was may go into bounds they may not want to go into (Most likely the AO rating) and NISA would make sure they don’t go there.

In a way it’s funny, because well, people were worried about the non existent fanservice in Totori, which makes me wonder how people are going to see something like this…

  • epiphaniesarefun

yay :) I love the music SO much on all these games :)

  • SeventhEvening

Qoga. Disgaea: Zettai Hero Project: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman.

NISA? Are you intentionally trying to make it where no one can ever request your games in stores? Retailers already look at me funny when I say the word “Atelier”, but Qoga and titles with multiple colons are really going to be a pain.

  • ar_sol_ciel

……………………..well you get the point…………….awesome…………definitely completing this series…….DLC is awesome…thank you NISA

  • zhemos

I’m so happy that AR3 is getting localized, but am I the only one that’s getting a little scared that some stuff might get censored?

    • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

      *raises hand*
Initially I thought it was never going to happen

  • goronyan

i wanna know if the US version will suffer with censors; And will we receive the Binary World?

  • http://www.yazuka.net Yazuka

Can’t wait to get my hands on the game.

  • DanteJones

    A! R! T-O-N! E-L-I-C-O! Ar Tonelico! Bath song anyone? ;D

Seriously though, we all knew it was coming but I’m stoked nonetheless.

  • http://www.myspace.com/effluentrainfall Effluent Rainfall

Yeah, uh… I just watched a couple of videos (I was on something of a media blackout for a while with it) and it makes me REALLY uncomfortable how young Saki and Finnel look in 3D. It wouldn’t bother me in Atelier because it’s generally really, really tame, but Ar tonelico is innuendo incarnate.

I was actually relieved when Ar tonelico 2 took a turn for the better and made Luca and Cloche look more adult after the whole Misha fiasco in the first, which itself wasn’t quite as creepy as this for spoiler reasons. I mean… I don’t want to sound like a prude or anything, but… Really, Gust?

I guess I’ll still get it. I want to know what happens with Ar Ciel, after all, but I’m none too keen on the heroines’ designs and the battle music is all horrible. :(

  • Guest

I am not sure of how I should feel on the title. I never liked the western titles – Melody of Blah, but after seeing this I am not sure if I am going to like AT: Melody of Blah, ATII: Melody of Blah, then AT Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel. It just lacks the set consistency not to mention it is still off from the original title’s literal translation.

That being said, I played through the second game because it was the sequel to the greatest RPG to date. Sadly, the second game was incredibly disappointing on many levels. I’ll only play the third just to see it to the end. If it is better than the second I would deem it a great success, but that wouldn’t be hard to accomplish.

On another note, I am glad the series is ending. Even if games in the Final Fantasy series are stand alone I would never want this to become never ending.
