EA Announce Darkspore, An Action RPG For PC

Electronic Arts have confirmed that their new action-RPG based on the Spore franchise is, indeed, titled Darkspore. The game is being developed internally at Maxis, the Sims and Spore studio, which has traditionally been involved in the development of simulation games.

Darkspore is a hack-and-slash loot RPG designed with a focus on four-player cooperative multiplayer in mind. The catch is, you aren’t upgrading “equipment” — in a Spore-like twist, you’ll be upgrading body parts. You’ll have access to three character classes of five different genetic hero types to start out with.

Darkspore is inspired in part by the award-winning creature editor tech of Spore, but also in large part from the team’s own passion for gaming and prior experience,” said Lucy Bradshaw, General Manager of Maxis. “The team has combined these inspirations to produce a unique take on the action RPG genre.”

EA are planning to have Darkspore out in stores by February 2011 on the PC. They’ll be talking about the game more at the San Diego Comic-Con this week.
