How To Think About Your EX Meter

Super Street Fighter IV pro, Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, is involved with producing a strategy guide for the game, and he recently posted a rough draft of an excerpt from the chapter on managing your EX meter, stating that feedback was welcome.

Anyone that’s interested in reading about how to manage their EX meter should probably take a look at the link above. Or maybe you can provide feedback if you have any to offer. Here’s an…excerpt of the excerpt from Gootecks’s post:

Although all characters have a Super Combo, some characters’ Super Combos don’t provide them with additional options or capabilities, they just are higher-damage versions of their EX or non-EX Special Moves.

For example, Balrog’s Super gives him the new ability to go straight through EX and regular Fireballs from relatively far away, effecitvely shutting down the opponent’s Fireball game. Also, he can cancel far MK into Super, which is one new weapon added to the arsenal. Credit for that one goes to Justin Wong.

Personally EX moves was the hardest aspect of SF4 for me to grasp, mostly because the benefits to them aren’t always obvious. Plus then it also was a matter of learning when an EX should be used over just the regular move, and more. To me it just compounded the difficulty of learning characters. Which was part of the reason fell through with me.

I liked the added strategy that EX moves provide. As a Bison player, for example, I like that the EX Psycho Crusher goes through projectiles, which was a good reason to save it when playing against, say, Ryu until they try to hadoken you.

I thought the Ex system was much better in 3rd Strike. The ability to choose how much Ex bar you wanted through the choice of your super was an awesome idea. Not to mention 3rd strike wasn’t all about Focus Dash Cancelling.

If you’re unsure of EX moves, just think of them as a way of doing whatever you want to do in a situation where you might otherwise be hit. Someone throwing fireballs at you? You can be an EX version of your horizontal move will go through it or absorb it (unless you’re E.Honda). Someone doing an Ultra up close to try and chip you to death? EX a Shoryuken.

Later on you’ll learn the special uses of some EX’s but the above is good way to think of them when starting off.

Ex System was much deeper in 3s. Now you can throw a Ex Move in and still have your ultra, where in 3s you had to choose between ex or super (Sure depends on how much bar you had build).

Judging by some of the comments, it should be noted EX isn’t about Super moves anymore in SSF4.EX meter for most characters is mostly about FADC + EX moves, depending on your opponent. I don’t think I’ve pulled off a Super move in a good long while because I’m constantly using my meter up for something other than the Super.
