Final Fantasy Agito XIII Is Halfway Through Development

Final Fantasy Agito XIII will be present at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in trailer form. This trailer, director Hajime Tabata says, will be very short. Looking at it frame-by-frame, however, he feels that it’s put together well.

"As for Agito, the event scenes have yet to come, but the real time parts have a fair bit completed," Tabata tweeted on Square Enix’s 3rd Birthday feed. He mentions that, while the development team were initially in agreement that the goals for Agito XIII were impossible to accomplish on the PSP, they’re immensely surprised that they were able to achieve their desired results on the system.

Agito’s event scenes will be handled by the same team as the ones from Crisis Core were. Tabata says the team will be able to make each scene feel dramatic. This team is presently working on The 3rd Birthday.

Agito XIII, Tabata reveals, is about halfway through its development. He goes on to mention that after wrapping up The 3rd Birthday, that game’s development team will be helping complete development of Agito.

Before Agito is released, however, there’s another unannounced title, likely to be Tetsuya Nomura’s unannounced project, that will be revealed shortly. Nomura has already confirmed that we’ll hear of this at TGS.

Whenver development progress on a Square Enix’s project comes up, it always says a team working on project x will help project y on this…project y’s team will work on project A’s this…..blah..blah..blah…Can someone in the industry comment on this? Is this normal in game development? Is this why their games take soooo long to finish development? It seems to be they are short on staff with too many projects.

It’s completely normal. Teams work together and contribute to each other’s projects all the time, depending on the requirements. Look at the new Medal of Honor. EA in Los Angeles are working on the singleplayer campaign while DICE in Sweden are developing the multiplayer portion.

Thanks Ishaan. That’s good to know.

Can you comment on how well the former Eido’s team integrate withing SE? Do they help with the “more Japanese flavor” franchise?

I can’t say I have personal knowledge of how they collaborate with Eidos, but Gamasutra did a few interesting interviews on that front:

Event scenes handled by the Crisis Core team. I like the sound of that.

Agreed. I can’t wait for it to be released… but Persona 3, Birth By Sleep, and The 3rd Birthday (when it gets released in english) will surely ease the wait.
I just hope that their opinions on the desired accomplishments are not BS, though they haven’t disappointed me on the PSP yet.

I liked Crisis Core. It’s like a Final Fantasy version of Tales or Star Ocean. Agito 13 supposed to use the same high speed ATB system that Crisis Core used but it’s supposedly faster, so I’m interested in that.

When they announced it a long time ago I remember seeing them make another announcement that they were going to have multiplayer in the game where someone else can take part in battles and control one of the other characters. They said it would be both adhoc and infrastructure, but I don’t know if I can believe it will have infrastructure after Dissidia was without.

I liked Crisis Core too, but absolutely despised the semi-random encounter. It was fine in dungeons, but in fields, ugh…

Yeah I remember one of Agito’s main points are multiplayer and multiple classes (at least when it was announced for mobile phones). If SE can deliver this, they will have my respect back

I agree so much, that was the games only fault for me. Versus and Agito better be worth the wait otherwise I will lose all respect for them. It seems like they are prioritizing other games over FF titles, madness.

Square Enix seriously needs to streamline their development cycles a little. I’m glad it’s beginning to tangibly take form, though.

Wow the only image I have in mind for this game is the image of the guy in red, with red background playing cards. Im so intrigued! Though if this is the case it must be coming out AFTER FF Versus XIII

I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes out before Versus at this rate.

    Unannounced Project?

    Final Fantasy VII Remake?!!

    Not bloody likely…

    :D

Remind me, what is this game again? I vaguely remember hearing about it like half a decade ago (sarcasm intended) and its only half done? But seriously, Square need to take a page from some of the other companies and announce games only when they can get it out within a year or so. Many of my friends, who are much bigger FF fans than me, have a hard time remembering that FFXIII Agito ever existed.

Heh, the psp can still surprise them, that handled was just so ahead of its own time, there is no need for psp2 yet

  • karasuKumo

If this new title is another KH I will personally punch Nomura in the face.

    • Rebochan

Indeed, it would suck if it was a good game like KH.

      • karasuKumo

It could be worse but there’s enough of them to be honest, to each their own I guess.

I wonder if their solution to getting everything to work on the PSP was to have the game ready for the launch of the PSP2.

I’ve got a feeling Agito will help leverate the bad rap and ill will that FFXIII received. It looks and sounds pretty sweet so far.
