Recettear Sales Say “Capitalism, Ho!”

“We do have a few other titles lined up as being pretty sure bets for localization, assuming that Recettear makes us enough money to actually live on, and current estimates place this somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 to 12,000 sales in roughly six months.”

That was what Carpe Fulgur co-founder, Andrew Dice, told us a few weeks ago, when we asked about what one could expect to see from the independent localization house in the future. Well, you can rest easy: Recettear shot well past that number within 20 days of its release. It’s currently at 26,000 units across all platforms and counting.

On the Carpe Fulgur website, Andrew writes:

“Everyone at Carpe Fulgur is… humbled? Amazed? It’s difficult to put a name to what we feel. Recettear has done what we had barely dared to hope it would do: in a month it has secured the future of Carpe Fulgur by allowing all of its members to make wages comparable to “proper” jobs in the industry for an entire year, and has provided EasyGameStation with a massive new stream of revenue that they did not previously have access to.”

Congratulations to the guys at Carpe Fulgur and EasyGameStation on a job well done!

Wow this is phenomenal news, more power unto them and a prosperous future too!

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Is this on the PSN, or will be any time soon?

    • Ereek

I’m going to go with “no” and “no.” The game doesn’t have very high requirements though, so even older PCs can play it.

We asked about that. The gist of it was that it’s up to EasyGameStation who are presently working on their next project, Territoire. And after that, they may just want to move onto something new. So, IF it ever happens (don’t get your hopes too high), it won’t be for a while.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Aww darn… Thanks for asking anyway. Maybe their next project then.

  • fuzzy_hobo

Good for them; and may they be successful in future projects as well.

I love these kinds of stories.
These people deserve it. They did a wonderful job with the game, plus the game itself is fun (though I know they didn’t actually make the game, just localized).
Anyway, I’ll be sure to look forward to anything they release in the future.

  • Ereek

This is excellent news for them, especially since the first thing that comes up on Google when you search Recettear is “Recettear torrent.”

I wish them luck in the future.

    • cj_iwakura

Anyone who really cares about doujin games will be BUYING this to support more being localized, not downloading it.

  • Kibbitz

Congrats to everyone involved. Hope this paves the way for more stuff from EGS to be brought over.

  • Tom_Phoenix

That is excellent to hear. Who knows? Maybe this overwhelming success will inspire them to make a retail copy of the game, sort of like how Audiosurf went retail after it’s success on Steam.

    Anyway, good job, Carpe Fulgur!

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Wow, I certainly never expected it to be this popular, but good for Carpe Fulgur.

  • malek86

Great for them. However, the difficult part in the videogame industry is not to make one hit, but to keep on making them. Hopefully they can retain the same amount of success for their next games too.

I haven’t bought this yet. Does it run (well) under Wine?

  • runesong

    Stained glass yayness!

I really enjoyed Reccetear. Not only is the game tons of fun, but the localization is quite charming to boot. Hats off to Carpe Fulgur!!!

I can’t wait to see what they bring us next. :)

  • neo_firenze

Wow, and I’ve been meaning to get around to buying it but haven’t gotten around to it yet… So they’ll be getting another sale from me pretty soon.

    Well done, Carpe Fulgur.

Fantastic news. It’s good to hear this game has reached many people who really enjoyed it.
I’m looking forward to what they have planned next!

  • JustaGenericUser

    This news made my night.

  • DlanorKnox

This is terrific news. I’m glad to see a game like these succeed, and Carpe Fulgur did a wonderful job localizing it. I’m so excited to see what games they release next!

  • Day2Day

I’m really glad this game did well. Hopefully this story serves as inspiration for other doujin game makers to localize their games…
