More On That Lost Shin Megami Tensei Game

By Ishaan . October 3, 2010 . 4:36pm

Shin Megami Tensei PS2 tech demo Last week, we reported on what was possibly a lost multiplayer Shin Megami Tensei game, demoed by Atlus way back at the Tokyo Game Show ten years ago. The magazine scan featuring the game depicted a screenshot of Cerberus, with the game marked as a fantasy action/adventure title.

Thanks to Jessica, we now know that this “lost” game was merely a tech demo, with the source of information being a “Making of [Shin Megami Tensei III:] Nocturne” Japanese DVD she owns.

You’ll need to install the Veoh player to watch the embedded video. Jessica also has screenshots and scans of other material from the “Making of” documentary, which show off early screens from Shin Megami Tensei III. Thumbnails below, high-res versions here.

A huge, huge thanks to Jessica for the amazing tip!

This look like a good game i wonder what is the story of it

This was just a tech demo for SMT:Nocturne, not a new game.

I knew it the min I laid my eye on that long blond haired guy in the fourth screen shout in the left side

Great. I’m from Brazil and can’t watch the video.

Oh cool, this confirms that Lisa Silverman WAS in the game at one point! I wonder when she was removed, it must’ve been fairly early in development.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I did a double take after I misread for a moment that you wrote “Sarah Silverman”… Phew! Not in my SMT.

If you go to the Photobucket link, Maya’s in there, too.

I wonder why she would be in the game? I didn’t think they would mix universes like that.

Well, she was never intended to be in the game. The developers just used her in some of the tech demo materials.

However, Megaten games leak into each other all the time. SMT: If… characters appear in a couple of the Persona titles. The Raidou Kuzunoha Detective Agency appears in the entire Devil Summoner series, but it also makes an appearance in Persona 2. There is a reference to the Kuzunoha family in Persona 4. The Demi-Fiend appears in Digital Devil Saga. Raidou Kuzunoha XIV appears in Nocturne Plus. Akemi Nakajima is mentioned off hand in Persona 3, and so is Yumiko Shirasagi (in the english version, this was edited into a reference to Maya and Tatsuya since the original Megami Tensei was never released in the US)

She was never actually in the game, just in the tech demo. If you look up there, Sid Davis and Louis Cyphre are also running around as well. They just rendered some “favorite” characters in order to show what the engine was capable of. Nocturne was the first Megaten game for PS2, so they used a lot of test material and tech demos to see what could be done.

    Beware! Maken X! Ahhh!

    Saw this last year.

I remember being more surprised at the fact that Hikawa looked like the Demi-Fiend but with red hair.

  • malek86

    What’s Sid doing there?

They could make something like this again, for ps3 as a Nocturne 2 and add Lisa with some other Persona cast and maybe some cameos battle against Embryon team (Digital Devil Saga) and Strage Journey team or MOAR Raidou.
