Watch Catherine’s Intro Movie

By Ishaan . October 18, 2010 . 12:20pm

Were you expecting the intro to Catherine to be sultry, involve lots of lingerie and maybe a steamy scene or two like the trailers? Don’t. Unless by lingerie, you mean a pair of Vincent’s boxers and by steamy scene, you mean pink-steam nightmares with bipedal sheep.

Famitsu have a first look at the opening movie to Catherine, ahead of it being published even on the game’s official website, and it plays out more like the start of an actual movie, with the game’s voice cast and creative staff being listed over a series of alternating shots of what appears to be Vincent’s home, the diner he hangs out at, and one of his bad dreams.

  • Love it <3

Alright, next news post needs to be a release date so I can pre-order it on Play-Asia already!

    • Same, Chris. Hope there will be some sort of special edition with loads of good stuff, as that would be the only reason for me to buy the JP version, as I can’t read a word of it!

    • Same, Chris. Hope there will be some sort of special edition with loads of good stuff, as that would be the only reason for me to buy the JP version, as I can’t read a word of it!

    • Aoshi00

I’ve been typing the word “Catherine” in P-A for a while, but it’s just some porn DVD… hope it’d be up for pre-order soon, I want to pre-order Last Story and GalGun as well (alrdy got DDP DFK and Dream Club Zero, on the fence for Graces F…)

  • nyoron

Song is OK but I’m not a huge fan. Great looking voice cast though.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Norio Wakamoto!! This game just got even better

    • Agreed

    • Hraesvelgr

    • goronyan

      Agreed x2

    • Aoshi00

Yea, Cell always makes everything better. And we have Hirata Hiroaki (Balthier) and Minagawa Junko (Ryoma Prince of Tennis), very good cast.

    • With shoji meguro the “better-ness” bar was already at max

    • M’iau M’iaut

So I’m hoping that his name being somewhat separated from the others means he’s the bad guy or someone else prominent. No one plays sleezy or bad better than Wakamoto. Kagato FTW!

He’s also done his fair share of dirty old men in plenty of h-games.

  • I love that song and I am loving the intro. It looks very much like a movie.

  • MrRobbyM

Love the song and the whole feel the intro gave me. Ughghghgkjhfkjhgkjdfhgkdhfgk I want this game already.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Shoji Meguro! Yay! Well, not a surprise but still nice to be sure he’ll handle the music. Pretty sweet intro.

    It’s the Pink Hour!

    • That can mean so many different things.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Funny, the sponsor message I got was “Mirrors”, and for I second I thought that was the intro…

Seeing the peephole shot and the drab interior of Vincent’s apartment juxtaposed against nightmare realms I am reminded of Silent Hill 4: The Room. Though I’m sure Catherine is much tamer.

A gameplay sample from the milder opening parts of the game:

  • Hraesvelgr

    The song is annoyingly bad…

    • Wow why so negative?

      • Hraesvelgr

Not meant to be. I’m interested in the game itself, but I don’t like this song. To compare, I didn’t like the “main themes” of Persona 3 or Persona 4, either.

        • then you will have a bad time with the next SMT games, shoji meguro rocks. Though i admit, this one song in particular didnt had the feeling i liked from his latest tracks

          • He said the music is supposed to have a “classic,” “adult oriented” and “erotic” feel to it.

          • Yeah, i could feel that kind of thing, i think it was just the fact that the whole video was just credits, and didnt helped me get hyped up xD well we are talking about a new kind of a game

        • Neither do I, but I do think that all of them work very well with the respective opening sequences.

          • Joanna

Agreed. I usually don’t like this kind of music but I found it really does fit the trailer and the mood of the game.

      • ShinGundam

        YO! YOYO!

        • MemeticRichard

          Yo…YO YO! HEY MAAAAAN!!!!

    • Ereek

Seconded. Then again, I don’t think I’ve heard an opening in Meguro’s new style that I actually enjoyed. They always make a bad first impression for me and I find I like the other music in the game better. And, even better than that, was his work on the more traditional SMT. I’m not really one of those “the new style sucks, old SMT is better!” types, but in terms of ambiance and strength, Meguro’s older songs have more of an impact on me than what we’re hearing here.

      • You didnt enjoy the P1P “Dream of Butterfly” opening? I thought that song was hot and catchy.

        • Ereek

Not particularly. It’s probably because I’m not really a fan of “catchy” songs or Engrish. I think Meguro’s strength lies in his battle themes. That or when he’s using a different person’s vocals in his song (Ala “Theatre” using the lyrics and voice from “Drop the Bomb”).FES had a decent opening, but that one didn’t really feel like an opening theme and more like it should have been used as background music at some point (like they did with it in P4).

        • MemeticRichard

          • Testsubject909

Sad, since the song’s lyrics are highly representative of the game’s story and situation. (if you can land yourself a translated lyrics sheet)

      • I guess I agree, the battle themes are particularly his best. Although P1P was of extremely archaic style, those battles theme kept my interest in the difficult battles (“Bloody Destiny” and “Lone Prayer”)

I just wish he would work on the presumed Engrish I hear from the songs… :(

        • Testsubject909

Though I enjoyed his work in P1P, I would’ve enjoyed having the ability to switch to the original game’s battle themes. I kinda miss em a lot.

      • I have never heard a Meguro track that I haven’t loved. I think the guy the perfect composer. He has a higher batting average with my than Nobuo Uematsu.

        • Ereek

I wouldn’t take it that far (I’m more of a Mitsuda fan than a Uematsu fan anyway. . .) but battle theme-wise, I agree.

He’s the only composer that I can actually tolerate listening to battle themes out of their respective game in unless the battle theme is only played once or twice through the game (FFVIII’s Premonition, for example).

A few off the top of my head and playlist
An Old Foe ~ Raidou 1
          New Battle ~ Abaddon
          Decisive Battle ~ Abaddon
          Demon Battle ~Abaddon
          Boss Battle ~Nocturne
I’m sure you’re used to the Persona themes so I don’t even need to mention them, but I’d like to make special mention of how The Genesis is a subtle work of art. As a song on its own, it might not be as strong as his others, but it’s the fact that it tells the story of the game without words is how it’s very impressive.

          • memoryofwater

My favorite Megaten soundtrack is Maken X (shut up! :P) and the Maken remixes, so I tend to prefer the electronica tinged scores and the older collabs over solo Meguro, but I do love the battle music in pretty much any of the games.

The hip hop and pop songs Meguro’s done more recently just sound…lazy to me, though. I like hip hop and I like pop and I love the idea of RPGs with a hip/pop theme but this stuff just feels a bit soulless to me. I do like EL-115, though:

I really don’t have many nice things to say about this game (yet?) but the visual design in the opening is something I can happily heap on top of the Reasons Why Atlus Have the Best Art Direction in Videogames pile. And that’s okay.

        • MemeticRichard

I take it you haven’t heard the Strange Journey soundtrack? Or Persona 3?

Both of which reek of twenty different kinds of awful…

          • Damn dude, what’s your problem with P3’s music?

          • It really is awful. P4’s music was SLIGHTLY better, but P3’s music was laughably bad. I said, “Hey hey hey hey.”

      • MemeticRichard

It’s the not black people trying to be black… :<

Meguro seriously needs to take notes from Takeharu Ishimoto. And, you know, hire REAL TALENT for the vocals…

Better yet, a SONGWRITER would do wonders….

    • Just goes to show you how different peoples taste can be. I think the song is magically good. Then again, some people thing Lady Gaga can be considered music. Crazy stuff.

      • You dislike Lady Gaga?! Her dance remixes (ideally, Just Dance, Paparazzi, Bad Rohmahnce, and Telephone are some of the best songs Ive heard in the past 5 years). I am shocked, lol.

        • Ok, time to be honest. I really don’t know who the heck she is. And I’m not kidding. I haven’t paid any attention to the American music scene in about 6 years. I pretty much exclusively listen to Japanese music, so I am completely out of touch with my own countries music. So, I just used her as an example cause it seems to be a name all the kids are talking about these days (I’m in my 20’s and I’m talking like I’m 60)Yeah, yeah, I’m a crazy otaku, whatev’s!

          • MemeticRichard

            Ignorant otaku.

Not only have you just insulted a dude for no godamn reason, you flatly admitted that you have no real idea why you insulted him, using an example which you are completely unfamiliar with.

If that isn’t obnoxious, I dunno what is.

          • I’m not sure who I insulted? Lady Gaga I guess?

          • The only one insulting people here is you. All i see is everyone giving out their free opinion.

          • You need to immediately open up a tab on youtube, and watch several Lady Gaga music videos! Paparazzi and Just Dance and Telephone are musts!!! Do it now!!!! lol.

          • I think I’ll jump into a woodchipper, instead.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Chooses to join Charles rather than watch the video.

          • Dude? Dude. You claim to be a proud American, but your username says different. And “so many games and movies utilized American artists in their musics and soundtracks” because they want to attract the mindless, tasteless masses. It’s all about money.

          • Testsubject909

It’s actually a reply to your above:
“As an proud American, I must disagree. The shocking numbers of songs and fans that Lady Gaga has is staggering and a testament to how great her music is. The American scene is where its at, why else would so many games and movies utilized American artists in their musics and soundtracks (licensed)?”

Maybe, if common sense allows. They utilize American artists because it’s a movie made by an american/located in america/targeting the general american viewer (which is probably not the optimistic perception you may have of what is the mainstream crowd for movies) and that they’re more easily available.

Would you, as a movie director or producer, hire a capable american artist to make you a musical piece that had absolutely no singing in it, or take the slightly better artist who lives in a faraway land, pay his lodging and his trip on top of his regular work pay and probably slightly higher pay for the bump in quality?

Odds are no, you’ll find an alternative closer by.

          • You are missing out on nothing by avoiding the American music scene.

          • As an proud American, I must disagree. The shocking numbers of songs and fans that Lady Gaga has is staggering and a testament to how great her music is. The American scene is where its at, why else would so many games and movies utilized American artists in their musics and soundtracks (licensed)?

          • vrakanox

I know how you feel man.

          • I haven’t been paying attention either, but it is kinda hard to not know who Lady Gaga is. Whether you like her music or not (or her CLOTHES for that matter) she is all over the place so it is kind of hard to miss.

          • Don’t listen to the radio, do no watch literally any TV (Netflix is all my TV and movie watching), don’t read the paper, and the sites I stick to are all gaming or Japanese related. Not sure where I’d ever have a chance to encounter her :)

      • Or it goes to show you how bad Hraesvelgr’s taste are.

        • Yeah, you’d have to have some pretty bad taste to dislike this song. Agreed!

          • MemeticRichard

Real people eat ritz bits sandwiches with cheese.

I take it you like yours with peanut butter.

          • Dood, peanut butter ownz juu!

          • Please, don’t just diss Lady Gaga for no reason… she’s amazing.

    • hadjimurad

i dislike it as a song, and would never listen to it outside of the game…but, i felt it went with the visuals well and fits the city and young adult scenerio. basically, i think something epic or eerie would have been wrong for this opening. so…i kind of agree?

      • Testsubject909

Video game music differs slightly as it is not singular. It is paired with visuals, an atmosphere and a story/theme.

        • hadjimurad

yeah, i know, i’ve written and produced music for commercials, art installations, a full length doc, and then just being in bands…mostly instrumental ones. but, while this particular songs fits the mood/visuals, i would not say it is good. honestly, and i know people will think i’m a pompous fool, but anyone with ableton live and a midi keyboard could have made this song. if it weren’t for the rap, it would be the same 5 second loop the whole time.

  • Stylish. That’s our Atlus

  • Kris

    US release please, Atlus!

    • You don’t even need to ask. We’re getting this, guaranteed.

      • MemeticRichard

Times like these, makes me wish Namco Bandai would buy up Atlus. X3

Cause, at least that way, this would be a legitimate guessing game.

        • Atlus should buy NBGI and localize the Tales games.

      • I would think it would be a gamble, would this game really take off in JPN?

      • cj_iwakura

They’d have to edit the heck out of that OP, unless they keep it in Japanese, and I HIGHLY doubt that’ll happen. The whole cast is American!

  • pridesin

When are they going to tell actual release date???
Winter 2010 is too vague for me.

    • Chow

Well, considering most of Winter 2010 passed in the Northern Hemisphere at the beginning of the year, and it’s completely finished in the Southern by now, that only leaves a ten-day period at the end of December for it to be released.

So, it could be either one of the two weeks that fits that time frame.

  • cmurph666

  • joesz

lol I hope joaquin phoenix isn’t the person who’ sung this

  • I’m sure the game will be amazing, but just like another amazing game (Persona 3), that intro music makes me want to shove a railroad spike into my good ear.

  • M’iau M’iaut

All that list of VAs makes me wish is that any of the Persona’s had a dual language option. The talent list has always been bloody amazing.

  • MemeticRichard

Seriously considering not buying this game after really taking the time to listen to this…

If the entire soundtrack is like this, then I hope to god you can turn it off or something…cause…cause it just ain’t worth it. :/

  • Guest

The only thought that ran through my mind while watching all those delicious names scroll around during the intro was

“Please be dual audio. Please be dual audio. Please be dual audio. Please be dual audio. Please be audio. Please be dual audio. Please be dual audio.”

There’s no excuse to not have it in this day and age, aside from the fact that I can’t see an English voice cast doing this game the justice it really deserves. Provided we do get it in the first place, which we damn near better.

I love Atlus, but I don’t love whatever company Atlus outsources voices to.

    • MemeticRichard

  • Shoji Meguro=Epicness awaits :D

  • If you don’t like shoji meguro’s music you sir must be a justin bieber + lady gaga fan

    • That just Does Not Compute. I like Shoji’s music and I like select songs from Justin Bieber + Lady Gaga. I think LG songs may be near equivalent to the type of songs heard in the soundtracks (ie the lyrical meaning).

  • If you don’t like shoji meguro’s music then
You you sir/maam must be a justin beiber + lady gaga fan

    • Heyheyhey watch it there :P

I do like some of Lady Gaga her songs while as for the other one…

  • Mitsuishi Kotono an Minagawa Junko… Atlus made me even more interested…

  • Joanna

I hope this movie-like intro means this is a VN. I know I’m in the minority here, but I love a good VN.
