Persona 2 On PSP Has The Most Non-Obscure Persona Intro Movie

By Ishaan . October 28, 2010 . 11:30am

Maybe it’s the relative lack of ominous latin text or dancing iPod style silhouettes covering the screen. While I can’t place my finger on the exact reason, the new Persona 2: Innocent Sin intro movie feels much more straightforward than the intros for both Persona 3 and Persona 4.

Watch it and see what you think. Thematic differences between the Persona games are always interesting to note.

Credit, as is usually the case with these scoops, goes to Famitsu, who made quick work of gathering all the necessary media for the game. In case you missed them, you can check out screenshots, too.

I think I preferred P3/P4 openings just a bit more, but I really enjoyed the more direct qualities of this along with it’s very crisp animation, colors and patterns.

  • lostinblue

I kinda dislike the music. shocking, considering this is Persona.Seems to be a opening song picked from an album too whereas before it was done inhouse, and it shows (the song sucks)Character artwork is notably different than the original too, which is a shame, it should be more in-line with it. Lisa Silverman’s jawline is nothing like the original and Maya’s eyes are strange.

I think this suffers from flashy style over substance; whereas the original game was all about substance.

    • Hraesvelgr

I just dislike the opening because the original was better.

        By miles. :<

    • Chiupon

The music is okay, I don’t like the change in the style. The artwork is way different, but it’s still similar; it’s very pretty, has some of Kaneko’s style, and remember; it’s not animated by him, just people attempting to replicate his style. The quality isn’t going to be the same. I personally enjoy the new style, it’s like a fresh look at old characters. It’s very flashy, but it also provides a LOT of substance and story elements within the game if you use proper interpretation (i.e Maya surrounded by mirrors. Maya clone, anyone?) it’s a bit better than the old one, but not by much. The game is STILL the same game; same story, characters, etc. The menus and such are updated with a newer, and yes, flashier style. It has both STYLE and SUBSTANCE. It’s not putting one over the other. After all, it’s Persona 2!

      • I think the opening is good. It’s funny how people are dissecting it, though. My favorite is Persona 3’s.

      • lostinblue

It’s not animated by him but most studios can replicate drawing styles pretty well, providing the contractor is demanding. I mean, one piece is not animated by oda either, or dragon ball or… and yet they were very in line with the original work. I don’t think this is.

It’s nitpicking I know, but I still dislike it, as for the rest of the game I know it’s the same thing and I’m very pleased to see it coming, don’t get me wrong.

As for the menu’s… I still need to see more.

        • Chiupon

          We’re all entitled to opinions….

… I bet you were expecting an argument. LOL

          • i think everything is fine people need to stop bashing the art is fine it’s not like their different people and how are you complaining about someones jawline….. 0_0
the music was weird but that fits persona 2 so well all those who did play it should actually know why

          • Chiupon

The music does fit, but I’d prefer a Der Doppelganger rap. LOL or atleast have it, someway, integrated into the lyrics.

          • lostinblue

Not really. I never aim for getting into arguments, in the end we’re all giving our opinions. And I respect others as long as they respect mine.

And I think you respect mine, so…

      • Exkaiser

It’s not Kaneko’s style most likely because it’s based on Soejima’s take on Kaneko’s design.

Soejima did do the in-game art for Persona and Persona-2, while Kaneko did the original designs.

  • There’s still a lot of allegory about the plot of the game, but it’s definitely more digestible for someone unfamiliar with the series’ penchant for Latin and disjointed phrases. Incidentally, I noticed Jun was (mostly) downplayed in this intro compared to the original.Fantastic opening, in any event. It’s really got me pumped for the inevitable release of Innocent Sin stateside! I will say that I’m slightly conflicted about the song they used, though it does improve about forty seconds in, when it better reflects how sentimental IS is.

  • evilmoogle

it still has the cheesy sound effects(1:09). :D

like the anime trailer for eternal punsihment

    • Now that I think about it, Eternal Punishment is the Persona game that has many adults in their team instead of teenager and I think it’s a detail to have in mind too compared to the others.

    • Oh god, the cheesy sound effects totally killed it for me. At first I was like, “Hmmm this is quite nice” and then came the mahou shoujo-ish transformation, and the sound effect :D
      But it’s still P2: Tsumi :D

  • I liked it, but Pursuing My True self and the 2-3 from the Persona 3 games Are still better IMO. This one just seemed to scattered and jumbled.

  • Now this, this is a remake that I need!!!! That was such an awesome opening, with awesome cinematives, and awesome character designs. I now, can not wait to get my hand on this game!!!!

  • Chow

I was worried when the beginning of the song started out like the J-Rap from Persona 3, but then it turned into the more badass-yet-heartful songs I like from the more pivotal points in the modern games. The J-Rap isn’t that bad, but I tend to prefer the other style of song.

I know Meguro is directing this time, and that this particular intro is done by somebody else (according to the credits in-video). But I wonder if he’s also doing the music for the game proper.

Even though I’m definitely getting this on day one, I’m worried I’m gonna treat it like Persona 1 and keep it packaged, especially if it comes with a initial-print special edition. ><

  • cmurph666

I really hope they don’t remove or censor anything. Anything that was controversial then is rather tame now.

  • Love it.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

    Sexy stuff, as per usual.

    Can’t wait to play this.

  • MemeticRichard

Y’see, y’see? As sexy and awesome as that intro is, it’s severely bogged down by that music…. Richard was right. Richard is always right. Richard is sad.Being able to toggle back and forth between the two soundtracks is probably the best thing to happen to this port.

    • Youre just one of the many people who dislike innovation and revolution, or rather in this case, modern musical hits. The music is awesome!

      • Testsubject909

Having had played the original Persona when I was in my younger teenage years and loving it’s music.

I have to honestly say… P1P’s music was… It was nice, it was enjoyable. At first it was odd, but after a while you got used to it and even enjoyable enough to bob your head to the beat.

And the intro song, it’s quite lovely… I do miss the more haunting style it had but this one replaces it with symbolism, it oozes it to no end. And when you find the translations for the lyrics, there is no denying, this song was made to perfectly fit with Persona.

After that, it all ends up on whether or not you can enjoy it. For exemple, let’s say you hate classical rock but love jazz. The game’s prior iteration was all jazz, but now is going for rock, though oddly, both style fits well enough with the game though it does portrait it in a different light, it still keeps true. Now, both scores are well made. Should you just blatantly state that the new songs are crap? No, no you shouldn’t. They’re good, they’re well made, they’re enjoyable if you enjoy the style.

On the other hand, you can state that you dislike it for personal reasons. Stating “I don’t like it”, is all fine. Stating “I think it’s crap” opens up a debate. “Why do you think it’s crap? Shall we discuss this over, go on both technicalities as well as ask those who are neutral to the argument and take their first impressions?”

        • Exkaiser

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

      • MemeticRichard

I really can’t come up with anything to counter what you said. You’re exactly on the money… I dislike innovation. And I hate modern musical hits, like Japanese people poorly rapping and attempting to be blacktastically hip. Since that’s awesome, and I don’t like it, I guess I’m not awesome.

        • LOL, when have my inferences and comments here ever been wrong?!

          • So you got one right; Don’t get Cocky! Your Ignoramus – to – Buddha ratio is still heavily biased to the wrong side.

      • Yeshua49

The new opening looks way more generic than the original one, sorry but I failed to see the innovation and revolution plus I don’t think it fit the game atmosphere very well.

        • The way the artistic depictions of flowers creep up. It reminds me of Indian art I’ve seen.

  • That was very colorful.

  • Testsubject909

Aside from the end-scene feeling rushed with visual exposition.

That was so beautiful… I could cry… (of joy, don’t rain on the parade of a remake of P2P with your “Wah, the music sucks even though we can switch around, you all suck for liking this, wah wah” You’ll start sounding as bad as the Sonic fans going “Wah, Sonic’s legs are two pixels too long, it’ll suck, wah wah”)

    • Hraesvelgr

Rarely does anyone say people can’t like the new music, but it is common for newer fans to force their like of the new music on the older fans. It happened with Persona PSP and it will happen with this.

      • Testsubject909

        I’ve actually witnessed the reverse.

I’ve witnessed old fans complaining to no end about how the new music ruins absolutely everything, as opposed to the new fans imposing their personal likes. Whenever I visited the forums, I typically saw more reasonable arguments from the “I like it” side then the “I hate it” side.

      • MemeticRichard

So I’ve noticed and been exposed to this first-hand… >:/

  • did anyone notice when tatsuya is going thu the doors slowly going naked on the last door u see jun’s persona chornos :) ohhh well haha

  • Although I liked the original opening, I like this one too. I’ve gotten used to settling for the “smooth” (aka modern) art style, so it’s actually really pretty to me. Makes me that much more anxious to get this in the states, since I never finished either IS or EP… XD I’m still working on P1, so this will give me an excuse to pick it up. 2 and 4 are my favorites~

I also didn’t care for the song at first, but then it got to the familiar female singer and it wasn’t as bad. I’m thankful for the original music option, but I’ll probably stick with the new one unless its horribly gone wrong.

  • Is this remake going to feature voice acting? I know the persona 1 remake didn’t, which sucked…

Also that’s gotta be my least favorite Persona Opening Theme…Not very good.

    • Its a remake, why wouldnt it have voice acting? Atlus couldnt possibly be that lazy!

      • Cause like I said: The Persona 1 remake didn’t have voice acting.

        • Did we play the same P1P? They had battle statements and in the cutscenes.

          • Oh right, I forgot they added voice acting to the North American version, but what I mean is I hope that the Japanese version will have voice acting.

      • its not a remake its a port and i dubt it will have voice acting there is a silm chance

      • The Final Fantasy III remake didn’t have Voice-Acting.

    • Have to agree that this is the least impressive opening I’ve seen come out of the Persona Team (even if it’s the ‘B’ squad since the ‘A’ team is currently working on Catherine).

      • Really? I thought Catherine was near finished by now

        • Well, I’m sure some of the staff has shifted over, but the game’s not out till February, so I assume some work is still being done on Catherine. I could be completely wrong though!

    • The original Persona 2 had voice acting, I don’t see why they’d remove it from the remake.

This opening will be in my heart forever.

The new one has an awful music like always but I like the animation and the movie animation but it’s short. Still the old animation design has something else that touch me, like DS Soul Hacker.

    • I like that it’s short. The original opening was too long. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great opening and song, but I was skimming through it just so I could see what’s going to happening because it was all moving so slowly. In the end, it really doesn’t matter because they offer both openings.

  • I like this a lot. I think the main difference to P3/4 is instead of having one flashy colour and a dark colour in contrast, it’s full of flashy floral patterns… I love that! <3I also prefer the animated scenes here alot more than those in P4, the P4 opening was showing the characters in scenes of their normal life, but here you see the girls in scenes where each of them is all alone, distressed, strange things happening around them… gives off the feeling of the game very well imo! <3 Also, I prefer this song AS THE OPENING over the old opening, which was an awesome song, but not as an opening (but as a battle theme… awesome much.) – the rapping put me off at first, but after hearing the song to the end, I do find it suits the song and the game.I want this. Now. ;_;

    • Exkaiser

I think the animations fit the different tones of the games well- P4 had the everyday life intact for almost the entire game, while it quickly falls apart in IS putting the characters in danger most of the time.

      • Oh I’m not saying I don’t like them at all, the scenes in the P4 opening do suit the game well… but the scenes here just seem more gripping, actioney and way cooler too me – even tho I really do love P4, I’m a sucker for the detective mystery theme… but oh well, P2 has the certain level of matureness that’s even more awesome.

  • Someone remember this battle?

    It was awesome! D:

  • EvilAkito

Cool intro, but I definitely like the original better.

I hope they leave in all of the original in-game music though. I really like the Persona 2 soundtrack(s).

  • best SMT opening ever.

  • Hours

I like the intro, but no Yukino was disappointing. (Unless I missed her.)It bothers me when intros don’t show all of the playable characters.

    • she was in the opening the part where u see the green slim on the floor in the road she is leaning on the lamppost

  • I wish there was a little more Yukino and a little more Jun, but I loved the ending shot with the lighter and watch.

I can’t wait for this to come out! : )

  • Its not bad, but it IS different from other intros, firstly because is not as abstract, it has the style but it stays a lot in one scene. Not like the others where you see a character for 3 seconds before something else happens.
I hope they bring this game over, it looks interesting

  • ZomaNeko

    Awesome! :D I love it~

  • Like the Intro. The song? not to much. Still buying it anyway.

  • Ren

Meh, the opening was kinda decent, but I don’t really care. As long as they keep Kimi no Tonari as the ending and keep Change Your Way as the ending of the eventual Batsu REhanced Port everything will be alright. And if the arranged version of the main theme is good it will even be a bonus.

Hmm, going to listen to a bit more of Kimi no Tonari to celebrate.

  • So… Yuki only got half a second of screen time? D:

Ah well, it’s okay. Because Eikichi wins.

  • SupaPhly

not sure if the official site is linked anywhere, but I guessed the url and got this

  • Xien12

P3 and P4 were kiddy compared to P2, just saying.

  • eliel

maybe cuz its a different art style than P3 and P4? but i like it never played P2 b4 but i think the opening works it give kinda of a mature overtone …

  • Personally I don’t think the music quite holds up to what we have for Persona PSP, Persona 3 or Persona 4 but visually it’s easily equal to any of them. Can’t wait for this to be released in the U.S….it IS going to get a U.S release right (holds up a baseball bat menacingly).
