Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen Is A 2D Fighter

By Ishaan . November 10, 2010 . 8:25am

Namco Bandai are taking their sweet time rolling details out on their new Rurouni Kenshin fighter for the PSP. A new page on the game in this week’s Jump magazine throws us a few more tiny clues about the game.

Titled Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen, the game is confirmed to include Kenshin, Saito, Sanosuke, Aoshi, Kaoru and Yahiko so far. The last two were revealed this week.

There’s still no word on what arcs of the manga the game will cover, but if you look at the bottom-left corner of that Jump page, you’ll notice Kenshin performing the “Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki,” a technique he learnt only halfway through the Kyoto arc.

Also, in the screenshot with Kenshin and Sano to the left, it looks like there’s an arc of ink or paintbrush colour following the swing of Kenshin’s sword, sort of like the art style Street Fighter IV uses. Artwork on the game’s website demonstrates this effect, too.

While the game uses 3D models, Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen is a 2D fighter and is due for release sometime in Spring 2011.

Sweet. I’m glad it’s not an RPG. It really should include the jinchu arc, though. There are so many possible characters from there and since it’s been completed for so long, what excuse do they have?

    • malek86

Well, they might want to sell you the sequel too…

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

That’s true. Namco Bandai isn’t exactly known for putting everything in one game to avoid sequels…

    • Exand

I’m not going to have a fanboy argument with people on here, sigh.

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Ooh, someone looked very closely at the picture. Awesome. That makes me glad

      • MemeticRichard

Too bad the Aoiya battle was well before the Jinchu arc, completely debunking what you just said….

      • Aoshi00

yea, like Richard said, it won’t be Jinchuu unless Yahiko does the Shirahadori (catching Kujiranami’s big cannon arm w/ his barehands) and that didn’t turn out good :) There’s no way Bamco would be so generous to include Jinchuu arc in the first Kenshin game after so many years, sequels to come…

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Kujiranami! The scene in which Kenshin returns from catatonia land and strikes him with a Kuzu Ryu Sen was so…! I just said to myself: “YES.”. Pardon the cliché, but it sent shivers down my spine.I get so excited just remembering Ruroken, it’s incredible. The Jinchuu arc is perfect. Now I feel bad for being such an over-excited fanboy. Oh well, it’s for a good cause.

          • Aoshi00

lol you aren’t the only one, let all the RK fans the world over unite :)!! Viva Kujira lol..

Oh yes, that was a cool comeback, he was so broken for so long hearing the death news.. and after he let the big guy have it (Kujiranami had the flashback of his arm being cut off by Battousai and went nuts), then Kenshin brought him back to sanity.. I forgot his quote but it was very moving, telling him to move on in the new era and not stuck in the past.

I need to go read the whole 28 manga again :) (they all turned yellow on the bookshelf, doh!)

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yup, it was a great song indeed! I liked all the OPs and EDs, I think…

Very impressed when his genius facet was shown. Greatly pleased too =) He had awesome fights. Kenshin, Okina, Gein, onde of the four bodyguards… Great stuff.

Thanks for making me feel a little better xD

Yeah, poor Kujiranami cried and all… I gotta read them too, it’s been too long!

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

            No edit, “one”, not “onde”

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Spring 2011….That gives me plenty of time to read the manga and then check out the anime after I read the manga. It better be good.

This game, hope it comes out in US.

    • malek86

Yeah, read the manga. Don’t bother with the anime, halfway through it becomes just fillers until the end, and I hear they are especially low-quality filers (enough to get the anime cancelled). They didn’t even adapt the last manga arc.

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

It’s not technically “filler” since they’re not filling up space to wait for the manga to have enough material. It’s just material not found in the manga, like Dragon Ball GT. However, I do agree that it’s not exactly good. If you’re going to watch the anime, just stop after the Kyoto arc

        • malek86

Maybe it was supposed to be filler – that is, if the anime hadn’t been cancelled, they would have probably adapted the last arc too.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Harris/100001216130300 David Harris

It is technically filler. They created multiple story arcs to allow the manga to get far enough ahead that they could adapt the story line without interruption, that way it doesn’t end up like BLEACH, with story arcs within story arcs. They definitely had plans to adapt the final manga arc, you can see the characters in full and silhouette forms in the final opening/ending sequences; sadly, people just stopped watching and the series doesn’t really even have a proper finish (and let’s not even talk about the OVAs… even Watsuki-san his stated his dislike of at least the second “conclusion” ova series…)

          • Exand

UGH, the OVA’s don’t exist for me. I can’t believe what they did in the Seisouhen OVA, that was such a horrid OVA, especially when you consider Watsuki-san repeatedly wrote in the manga comments section that he wanted the series to have a happy ending.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Am I all by myself when I say that I…. I kinda liked the anime exclusive arcs?

It was sad when Magdalia (I think?) was with Sanosuke and there was sadness due to things that I will not mention because of spoilers and… The Feng Shui crap was kinda dumb, yeah, ok, but as a whole I just saw those arcs as more animated Kenshin, and I enjoyed them!

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Not entirely. Comparatively, they’re not great. But I didn’t think they were bad either, at least not the fighting parts. I didn’t really care for some of the slice-of-life portions, which is funny because many slice-of-life animes I enjoy, but not when I’m used to seeing these characters brawl it up, but yeah, the actually battle arcs, or mini-arcs or whatever, were nice

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

It was an interesting idea to have another Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu user. And yes, loved the fights too. And, you know, it was a nice chance to listen to the beautiful soundtrack all over again.

          • Aoshi00

You’re not alone I liked some of those fillers too, the pirate was kind of cute :) That’s the thing w/ fillers, they’re not all great, but some of them are still fun and add more to the story even though it’s non canon. Too bad w/ the Feng Shui stuffs and all the Jinchuu arc wasn’t realized, was so looking forward to seeing Aoshi’s “butt bow” and his fight w/ Gein.. and the “death” of Kaoru you know..

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

The animation for the pirate episodes was incredible (at least for the one in which Kenshin gets caught)!

Aoshi’s fight was so cool, Watsuki really made him stand out like the superior mastermind that he is.

          • Aoshi00

Not to mention it was during the pirate arc that the 3rd ending song “Heart of Sword” by TM Revolution came out, that was a kick ass song. The animation was on and off for the Kenshin anime series I guess but mostly good to excellent. yea, Aoshi was so ruthless in the crazy shura mode, a tactician too, and he was Sherlock holmes in Jinchuu :) He made a big impression on me w/ his fight w/ Kenshin in Houji’s study, destroying the bookshelfs in the whole room. Actually I thought that fight wasn’t very well animated compared to the manga which was a pity because Aoshi as my fav, obviously :)

          • epy

I think the Amakusa filler was very very good. The rest… well, I liked it cause I am a fanboy. A couple of filler eps were nice though, like the one with Kenshin proposing to Kaoru by mistake, the onsen episode and the one with Aoshi coming to get Misao in Tokyo.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You’ll want to read the manga for the complete story, but the anime is superbly choreographed and it has an amazing, amazing soundtrack.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

So Just like Bleach? And Fate/Stay Night/every other Anime based game? -.-

But Rurouni Kenshin is Awesome, so maybe, since the story is already there, they’ll have a unique and nongeneric fighting system.

    • raymk

I don’t get why the y keep making all these fighters on psp.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

So, static character portraits, lots of text and battles. Ruroken deserves better, but I’m glad they think it’s worth another shot. Because it’s definitely material worth exploring!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

Sometimes I wish a company that is better at making fighting games would make an anime based 2D fighter, like Arc Systems. This could still be fun, though.

    • Code

They did though, they made a Hokuto no Ken fighter on PS2, and from everything I’ve heard it was pretty damn good all and all. Although I definitely agree with what your saying, if Arc Systems was doing this with glorious 2D Sprites, even I might be tempted to snap it up.

    • Exand

Capcom made a pretty good vs fighting game based on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Came out in arcades and I think later on PS1 and Saturn.

    • Aoshi00

I’ve been saying that for years too, like MvC2 or BlazBlue/GG kind of 2D fighting game w/ Kenshin is just a no brainer, I’m sure it would do the author Watsuki proud too being a big Samurai Shodown fan that he is. They could even do the same thing for his next work Busou Renkin, which is also perfect material for a fighter w/ all the weapons and super moves.Honestly, I would say this game has a 80% chance of being a stinker, just pray to god there’s no long load times.. but being a RK fan and deprived of Kenshin goodness for such a long time. I would gladly be the sacrificial lamb import a copy at horrible exchange rates :(…

  • http://flailthroughs.blogspot.com Flailthroughs

Combined with the news of a Dragon Ball Z game suddenly using the Butoden title again after a 15-year or so break it makes me wonder: has Bandai been inspired -presumably by the success of Street Fighter IV -to open the floodgates on 2D licensed fighting games once again?

  • epy

I can’t see that picture very well, so the kanji elude me, but isn’t Yahiko using a Kamiya Kasshin Ougi right there, if so, that means that it also covers the Jinchuu arc… and well, Yahiko might as well be a joke character if they don’t cover the Jinchuu. He was useless as hell before that.

    • malek86

I don’t think fighting games are supposed to reflect the character’s strength. Otherwise, how was Kamiya supposed to compete in the Hokuto no Ken game for PS2?

    • Exand

Yup, he’s definitely doing “miyou mimane ryuutsuisen”, the move he pulled off to defeat Henya during the Aoiya battle. So unless they do some weird time shifting…

      • Aoshi00

Henya was in the Kyoto arc how does that have anything to do w/ Jinchuu? If it’s Jinchuu, Aoshi should have his alternate ninja outfit too.

        • Exand

????????I can’t believe I’m having to explain this to someone who has Aoshi in his name. :PYou’re getting confused with Hannya, the guy with the striped sleeves and hannya mask?I’m talking about Henya from the Juppongatana, the guy who uses dynamite to blow himself up into the air.

          • Aoshi00

What!? Hannya w/ the Noh mask is my precious henchman (cries, he sacrificed his life for me!), I know Henya is the flying bat freak from Juppongatana. But Yahiko doing this move from the Aoiya battle only means that this game includes the Kyoto fight, he learned that defending the Aoiya. But what does that have to do w/ the Jinchuu Enishi fight? That’s where Yahiko learned the shirahadori against the concealed weapon guy and later unsuccessfully against Kujiranami’s ginormous cannon arm, getting knocked upside the head, w/ blood gushing all over like EVA unit 01 :). Our question is what indicates this has any material from Jinchuu/Enishi. We know that this includes Kyoto/Shishio is all and this is most likley the case, it’s Bamco we’re talking about.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Well, strengths aren’t always as direct like that. I mean, Goten can crush SSJ3 Goku in the DBZ games, but that would never happen. If all the strengths were directly as they are in the story, all battles would be decided before they’re fought

      • joesz

lol~ goten is my fav character in the dbz game franchise.
He can kick ass as a tiny goku.

in every dbz game, the tinies will always prevail.

  • Exand

My only wish for this game, to make PSP games playable on the PS3.
I hate playing fighting games on the PSP. :(
Scratch that, I hate playing MOST games on the PSP because of the controls…

    • Guest

That would never happen because they fear tat would kill the PSP

    • Code

Yeahhh, fighters on PSP doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. I mean I understand the attraction to Japanese developers, and the market in Japan. But it’s targeting a different demographic then competitive fighters I guess. Still when I think of portable fighters I like, I think of Jump Ultimate Stars which although not all that competitive was a blast any ways >w<

    • Exkaiser

Why? The PSP’s got a d-pad and face buttons, all you need to play a fighter.

  • shion16

    Reading the manga
    Currently in volume 23
    and its awesome as hell

    • Aoshi00

Vol. 23 had one of my all time favorite covers, the Kenshin-Enishi fight was epic too.. and then in the end… and at the end of vol. 24, all hell breaks loose..

Yep, just reread the Jinchuu arc a couple of weeks ago. Pure awesome, although Saitou was rather underused. Still waiting for the damn thing to get animated, then again I had to wait years and years for Saint Seiya’s Hades saga to be animated… man the Hades Sanctuary OVA was pure awesomeness …and man they messed up the Hades/Elysion part.

        • Aoshi00

Yea, Saint Seiya fans all over the world were so excited, we finally got the Hades OVA 13 yrs later (I remember I couldn’t believe it when I read the announcement, kind of like a Chono 3 sort of thing, rumor after rumor but would never happen). . The Sanctuary part was good for the most part despite the inevitable seiyuu change for some Gold Saints (some dead some retired), but I found the animation to be only passable, not as good compared to some better drawn TV episodes from the 80′s and the movies, especially the 2nd and 3rd one. And then Hades and Elysion were a total mess up, did we want Ichigo as Seiya and Cloud as Shiryu, did we?? Also the animation was not very good I thought, they should’ve hired that French artist, his elegant and sharp drawings looked very close to Araki Shingo and Himeno Michi’s drawings back in the 80′s, he made that sample opening w/ Kageyama’s song from the Hades drama CD when there was no Hades in the 90′s, the animation looked even better than the Jpn OVAs I think and the guy’s just a fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10OnD4eraAsI don’t think think would mess up Kenshin though if they ever do a Jinchuu TV series, unless they decide to go w/ an entirely new cast or something, and some guy instead of Suzukaze Mayo as Kenshin lol, that would be bad.I don’t know why part of my post kept disppearing it’s driving me nuts.. despite Kurumada pissing of a generation of loyal fans (most in Jpn just rented the OVAs and boycotted getting the DVDs, I got all the DVDs except the Elysium ones), Bandai still made a killing on the new series of more detailed Cloth Myth figures. But it left a very bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Everyone was hoping they might one day re-dub it w/ the original Bronze Saint cast (since DVD could have more than one audio track), no it’s impossible w/ Saitou/Shiryu gone…

        • Aoshi00

Here’s the other Hades short in front of the “Wailing Wall”, I thought this guy did a heck of a job as one person. He also used another track from the old Hades drama CD. Furuya Tohru’s Seiya sounded so much better (guy even stuck his neck out for the fans, saying he wouldn’t be Seiya unless the rest of the original Bronze saint cast was used, he didn’t feel like betraying anyone, and Kurumada just trampled on us by ignoring everyone’s plea..)… Ichigo/Tidus, give me a break..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPnEVukc9xM&feature=related

          • epy

Yeah, I remember seeing that video back in the day. I was “AWESOME! Is there a new Saint Seiya series?” Only to be told it was by a fan. I still don’t get why the hell they changed the seiyuu. Actually I don’t think they did a bad job, its just not the same. I mean, only Furuya’s overdramatic voice can pull off Seiya’s phrases about fighting for love and justice.

The Hades/Elysion OVAs were bad for many reasons, for starters most of it looked like a sliding show, not much fluid animation that made the original series so awesome. Two, what the hell happened to the music, the battles were most of the time silent with no sense of urgency, you know, no Pegasus Fantasy BGM at the right time for us to “Yeah! Kick his ass!” like we did when we were kids. Three, the very important emotional parts like the scene with Ikki and Pandora or the unveiling of the God Cloths were rushed as hell, I mean, I’ve been waiting to see the God Cloths animated for 13 years and you guys show them like it was Naruto doing the clone thing he does every damn episode. The Sanctuary part however, was all fans wanted in my opinion. IMO the animation was awesome, the music and its timing is just like the series, they pulled off all the important parts masterfully (specially Athena Exclamation scene). I wish the entire OVA had been handled that way.

Oh well, lets try waiting another 13 years to see if they remake the whole damn thing again, I doubt Furuya and the rest are gonna be alive/active though.

          • Aoshi00

Agreed on all counts. The old series got your heart bumping, and Hades Sanctuary arc had a lot of heart too, and the changes they made to the manga improved on the story as well, the build-up to the Athena Exclamation scene was epically done no doubt and the soundtrack hit all the right notes. Maybe I was being too picky, I just wished he animation was even better like the 2nd or 3rd movies, those have crazy good animation even in the 80′s. Then Hades and Elysion were really rushed, I also waited for years to see the Ikki/Pandora scene.. though I would think if they went w/ the original cast, they would’ve still salvaged it, nobody could pull off Ikki’s coolness and cheesiness at the same time other than Hori Hideyuki.. Just compare this, veterans Furuya Tohru and Han Keiko as Seiya / Athena better or Ichigo/Rukia? Not that they were bad, but they were just so different.. the reason why Kurumada replaced all the Bronze seiyuu was because he thought Furuya and co. were too old sounding (ignoring all the fans’ petition).. they might not be at their prime, but they still did a heck of a good job in Sanctuary.. w/ the exception of Shiryu perhaps. I thought he had a hard time raising his voice and didn’t sound right, and it turned out he had cancer and died shortly after that.. The Ikki/Shun (possessed by Hades) scene was not bad, but we all waited Vegeta/Horikawa Ryo to do it all these years.. Kurumada had to understand, the people who bought the OVAs were all fans from the time, not kids who are watching Naruto now you know..

  • MangaTherapy

I have to admit. The game has got me interested in Rurouni Kenshin all over again. That manga really got me thinking about life.

I took a look back at some great moments in the series. You can read it at: http://www.mangatherapy.com/post/1600450375/rurouni-kenshin-moments

I’m assuming they will announce the villains next. Here’s to seeing Shishio, Sojiro, Enishi, Anji, & Usui, Gein, etc.!
