Shenmue Creator Would Like To Develop Shenmue 3

By Ishaan . November 16, 2010 . 11:45am

SEGA recently held a Shenmue Town presentation in Japan, where they had original Sega Saturn mascot, Segata Sanshiro, on hand to help promote the game.

More importantly, Shenmue series creator, Yu Suzuki, was at the event, too, to discuss the game. Suzuki is no longer with SEGA, but he’s working with them and Sunsoft on Shenmue Town through his company, YS Net.

Famitsu got a chance to speak with Suzuki at length about Shenmue Town. What’s more, the very first question they asked prompted him to mention Shenmue 3.

Suzuki, like SEGA have in the past, acknowledged the demand for a Shenmue 3 that picks up where the second game left off. However, Suzuki feels that a new game that could live up to the scale of the previous titles would require immense preperation.

If he were to develop Shenmue 3, it would have to be in line with the two previous Shenmue games in terms of volume, Suzuki told Famitsu. He went on to say that he would like to work on such a game in the future.

  • Hm, Ive never actually encountered the series before…

If both him and Sega have acknowledged that there is demand for another game…then what are they waiting for. lol.

    • MrRobbyM

      encountered…but you’ve *heard* of it before….right?

        • MrRobbyM

Seriously. This guy is either trolling or a really good comedian.

          • MemeticRichard

Or just *maybe* doesn’t know anything besides Kingdom Hearts, Bleach and Naruto…

      • The only thing I know of Shenmue is some dude and some forklift type vehicle.

        • MemeticRichard

          See Mr. Robby?

          Beyond redemption.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

But is he beyond… Red Dead Redemption?

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

            And here he comes xD

          • MrRobbyM

Don’t mention that game, Sawada might not know what it is.

          • MemeticRichard

“Isn’t it that one Grand Theft Auto game?”

        • And probably because you saw him at Sega all-star racing…

    • While it’s in high demand, Shenmue is also famous for being one of the most expensive games ever made. SEGA are probably not too keen to empty their budget into a series that didn’t actually pan out too well commercially for them.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Sega already began re-releasing Dreamcast games on PSN/XBLA, so we’re bound to get Shenmue 1&2 somewhere down the road (maybe when 3 is announced?=P). At least I hope so.Too bad that it wasn’t such a commercial hit, like Sairus mentioned.

  • Now I’m DARNED sure that there was -no- interest to see a third game through before this interview.

So now that has practically changed from impossible to possible, now. Awesome. So now it’s gone from a ‘never see it’ to ‘always tease it’ until otherwise confirmed.

That’d be me thinking that we’ll ever see Killer Instinct 3.

    • There was a lot of interest in Shenmue 3 way before this Interview. You just weren’t looking in the right place…

  • malek86

And I would like to buy it.

  • Dear Sega,

Please include gameplay in this Shenmue

    Love, Jon

    • Now that you say it like that, I just realized something.

Shenmue was Heavy Rain before Heavy Rain was even thought of.

      “Innovation” my foot! :O

  • MemeticRichard

And I too would like for him to develop Shenmue 3.

  • joesz

I guess Aoshi is getting his wish.

    • Aoshi00

Yes, we all need to see Ryo continue his wacky adventure in China (or would it take place elsewhere half way across the globe?), anyway the man still has a lot of Kung-Fu fighting to master :)”Immense preparation”? Come on, Yakuza practically borrowed the same style of gameplay and formula, and we have how many, like 10 Yakuza games now? If Sega could just stop doing one of the following,Yakuza Kenzan 2Yakuza 5Black Panther 2Yakuza Zombie Apocalypse 2Voila, an epic Shenume 3, and all fans are happy!

      • joesz

        completely agree:D

      • kupomogli

I’d like a Shenmue, but I really love the Yakuza series so I don’t mind it’s getting so much love recently. No offense to you, I know you’re making the post as on topic that if Sega made one less Yakuza game then they could work on Shenmue 3 but people should stop complaining about how many Yakuza games have came out in the past year. Until there’s a bad Yakuza game what to complain about?

        • Aoshi00

I didn’t mean to bash the Yakuza milking, I don’t care either way because I don’t follow the series anymore, like the countless DB 3D fighting games, not that they’re bad, but just too many I lost interest. I just thought if Sega could divert a fraction of the resources Shenmue 3 is far from an impossible task like Suzuki Yu said (of course the world in Shenmue would be much more vast and ambitious than Kamuro-cho), the demand is certainly there (I don’t know how many fans are actually there, waiting for Shenmue 3 is like Chrono 3 or something, you could wish all you want but they ain’t making it..), it’s just a bit annoying Sega is too busy w/ Yakuza and neglected Shenmue, which is what Yakuza is based on in the first place, they could’ve just thrown us a bone w/ a Ryo DLC skin and it would feel like playing Shenmue alrdy. I mean another HD Yakuza w/ zombies and Shenmue on cellphone, just come on..

  • kupomogli

Shenmue HD Collection please. That’ll hype Shenmue up and then everyone will want to play the third.

    • Aoshi00

That would be totally awesome w/ trophies and dual track. “Fuku-san”, “Ryo-san” the Eng dub was so awfully corny lol… In Eng. Ryo sounded extremely polite, too timid like a boy scout , in Jpn he’s a bit more wild even though he’s still an earnest student. If they EVER make ONE less Yakuza game (just one less out of five that’s all I’m asking) and start tackling Shenmue 3 in my lifetime, I hope they would go back to use the original VAs for both Jpn and Eng. It’s like Toy Story 3, it can’t be anyone other than Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

  • thebanditking

Why not just give him creative control and use the Yakuza engine and team? I am sure that would heavily cut the total investment needed, heck even tweaking that engine would likely be the best course of action

  • Suzuki-San Assassin’s Creed wants to have a word with you
