A while back, Square Enix held a Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light contest, where fans were required to send in their own crown designs for the game in separate Art and Ability categories.
This past week, Square announced the contest winners, along with comments on each entry from the game’s art director, art designer, and overseas producer. Here are the winning entries:
Cat Herder (First prize):
Cat Herders are skilled negotiators with the unique ability to hone into the feline psyche. Using various tools, including a satchel of catnip, a feathered cat wand, and a special shepherd’s staff known as "the persuasion stick," they can manipulate these notoriously difficult yet lazy creatures.
Akihiko Yoshida, Character Designer & Art Director: At first glance, I thought the character’s were playing with the adorable cats. But then I realized that the character’s were holding animal control poles! It’s very humorous! Wonderful!
With a deep love for gems, the gemologists are experts at finding the rarest of gems. their bartering skills make even the most common gem worth more. Their strong and steadfast attitude is balanced by by their knowledge of geology and trade.
Masashi Takahashi, Overseas Producer: A crown based on the gem, a vital in-game item. I love the use of warm colors. BlingMoogle sent a number of ideas and we enjoyed them all!
Trickster Demon (Runner-up):
Increase in steeling and magic.
Yuka Miyamoto, Art Designer: The design is very original! The fact that the crown seems to be biting into the head is irresistable!
If you want to view the winners in the Ability category and the judges’ personal favourites, take a look at the game’s contest results page. There are even Nerd and Drunkard crowns on there.
